I've met Mr Lydon when he was sober, and he was a genuinely nice guy. I think his "WWF" persona was definitely a bit larger than life that evening, and the British sense of humor was a bit lost in translation to the American audience due to the alcohol imbibement. He was (and probably still is) feeling the loss of his wife. Lost her back then due to Alzheimers, and now also in the physical sense. It has to screw with your head, and some people are more sensitive than others when it comes to hiding their inner feelings. The interview was a snapshot in time, but not something that I'd judge his entire life by. We all make mistakes. It's a shame it was emphasized in such a negative light... for sure, not one of his more tactful evenings... but I'm sure he'd be far more coherent filming it today. Much respect to Henry Rollins though, and all who took part in the panel interview that evening!

I'm in no way disputing USA's claim... I have no jingoistic notion in the slightest when it comes to global penile protrusion measurement, and could care less about drunken patriotic flag-shagging, however going back to your original point, I totally agree that UK citizens suffer from a spectacularly unhealthy self-deprecating nihilistic "own worst enemy" sense of confrontational humor which borders on projected self-harm. However it must be stressed that British humor (in my experience & perception) is not solely arrogant... is light years away from being one dimensional and has a multitude of different facets depending on which area it's born. It's all subjective & I truly believe that each member of the panel that night were there for a damn good reason, in that they each played a significant part in contributing to their pocket of the punk genre of music, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned. 😉

What crap, I watched the press conference on youtube. Sure John Lydon was drunk, but still talking sense. He actually said "Iggy was not a punk", which is true as punk is a moronic term invented by the UK music press to insult the new bands like the Pistols, the Damned, etc. As for Marky Ramone, he just doesn't understand the huge difference between what happened in the UK and the CBGB's scene. The Ramones did a good album but then got stuck in a rut, that's not what happened with the UK bands, especially the Pistols who were not in it for a career as a rock n roll group! The real difference being the direct attack on the way things were in the UK, that's why the British Establishment feared these bands so much. They were the next step upwards from the 60's rebels.
@1985cactus6 ай бұрын
A good album? More like three-four perfect albums. And a bunch of good ones, afterwards. Should The Ramones sing about attacking the British government? I don't understand what you are saying. @haraldtheyounger55046 ай бұрын
@@1985cactus Obviously, we all have differing outlooks and tastes. It's the lyrics which make the difference, the Ramones were traditionalists indulging themselves with relationship problems, whereas the likes of the Sex Pistols had a deeper dimension. Why would an American band sing about the UK government, when they have enough evil within their own? As for Lydon, ask him. I cannot answer, but I do agree he should have quit after Album, but he may have desired more mainstream appeal thereafter.

Johhny was the only one there who came across like the type of person that interested me in the genre in the first place. Not because he was drunk (honestly, he seems to act about the same even when sober) but because he seemed very real, blunt, unapologetically opinionated, unafraid, and entertaining with unique perspectives. He doesn't sound like someone kowtowing to a political agenda, being PC because his environment deems he should, or pretending to get along with/be friends with people he doesn't actually like, respect, for care about. IMO, Rollins just comes across like a pseudo-intellectual generic liberal tool with nothing original to say.

@@dmerls8571 As far as politeness goes… yes. When it comes to people like this, I prefer someone who doesn’t seem to care about being polite. I don’t tune in to hear their platitudes, generic liberal political opinions, or niceties for the sake of civility. I don’t like them giving out compliments they don’t really mean or showing respect to people they don’t actually respect. I like hearing their blunt, unfiltered feelings, as rude as they may be; they're rock stars, not news correspondents or politicians. That was the whole appeal of them in the first place. That doesn’t mean I’d prefer for Johnny Rotten to be the one saying grace at my Thanksgiving dinner or giving my grannies eulogy. If I’m choosing someone for those tasks, sure, give me Rollins and his polite, phoney-seeming tactfulness. Granted, everyone at the funeral may be a bit bewildered as to why toxic masculinity, his hatred for Trump, and racism is being brought up, but at least he’s not blowing snot out into the casket, I suppose, and telling everyone that when he knew nana she was the town bicycle. When I watch Johnny Rotten in an interview, I'm seeing what I always saw punk rock as: rebellious, outspoken, independent thinking (I have some longwinded caveats to that, but I'll refrain), and unconcerned with tact. When I see Rollins, I may as well be watching any random liberal celebrity giving the same opinions I've heard parroted a thousand times, pretending like they're the smartest person in the room when they're clearly just riding a partisan bandwagon. I don’t care which one of these guys would be a better friend to me or who I’d prefer to have over for dinner. The appeal was that they felt like they were being genuine and uncorrupted by a herd mentality. I may not always agree with Rotten, but at least I know he isn’t just saying the things and having the opinions that literally every other "countercultural" (it's hardly counter now) hipster expresses. Unlike Rollins, he doesn't feel like just another cog in that machine. And I certainly never get the impression that he’s just “playing the game” or is censoring himself to not hurt his career or reputation with his audience. For good or bad, what I see with him is what I get. And, yes, I prefer that. And I don’t know what “facts” you’re referring to. I’m interested in unique perspectives when they're delivered to me in an interesting, entertaining, or thought-provoking way, but I’m hardly looking to any of these people to get my “facts”. However, even if I was, Rollins certainly wouldn’t be high on that totem. This is the same guy who spent years taking up for The West Memphis 3 for Pete’s sake (yet another trendy celebrity bandwagon cause that wannabe advocates and activists dove into without researching).

00:00 🎥 Henry Rollins shares his reluctance toward music documentaries despite being frequently asked due to his ability to articulate thoughts. 00:27 💰 Rollins agreed to be in the punk rock documentary but requested payment, tired of providing knowledge without compensation. 00:55 🎤 He attended an honor panel for the documentary in Los Angeles with various musicians, including Johnny Rotten and Marky Ramone. 01:24 🤨 Johnny Rotten disrupted the panel, behaving drunkenly and insulting others, including Iggy Pop, causing the discussion to derail within 11 minutes. 02:33 😔 Rollins refrained from confronting Rotten despite feeling sorry for his state, acknowledging Rotten's influence and impact on music. 03:29 🤝 Despite the chaos, Rollins managed a somewhat amicable interaction with Rotten, reflecting on the odd and surreal nature of the encounter. 04:13 🤷♂ Rotten's manager, apologetic for Rotten's behavior, acknowledged the situation's nature after the chaotic panel.

The video, or the part that was videoed, is on youtube. Henry had the best reaction of everyone there, imo, which was just to laugh at the absurdity of it. So, in a tiny, minute way I cringe to hear him say he thought about punching out John at the time. Partly cause that's always easy to say afterwards, and partly cause it would have been a stupid reaction. It's not a good idea to take a drunk person seriously, imo. John was clearly pretty drunk and obviously alcohol just exacerbates his existing condition; tending to be as controversial and verbally confrontational as possible. It did make him look sad. And I'd bet he regrets it. But these things happen sometimes. And I think in American culture, people take stuff like this a little too seriously. Just my opinion. And why I say Henry's response at the time was perfect. This isn't to excuse drunken behaviour, but there's just no point in getting offended and arguing with a drunk person. You just can't take that seriously. Even they don't believe what they're saying most of the time. Just my opinion. But it was pretty entertaining.
