Henry Rollins hears the girl yell out his name and his first thought is- "There's no choice but to confront you, engage you, to erase you, I've gone to great links to expand my threshold of pain, I'll use all of my mistakes against you, there's no other choice. I'm nameless now, I'm nothing now, I'm no one now, but my soul must by iron cause my fear is naked. Naked and fearless and my fear is naked, Dead Inside". This is just social anxiety folks. He went into fight or flight mode. I do the same from time to time and I usually feel like an idiot afterwards. It’s almost like a fit of PTSD. You’re bullied as a child and you want to let the world know you’re not going for it anymore but you end up misjudging the situation and overreacting. I’m sure he’d be the first to tell you he mishandled this situation today.

imo cause he has also spoken about how it takes him 3 times to do the same thing someone learns after the first time and works harder to make sure he does, and being diagnosed "hyperactive" through school, he seems to have ADHD, and this is similar looking to RSD or "rejection sensitive disorder" which is observed a lot in folks with ADHD. In saying that I definitely don't think ADHD, anxiety and PTSD are mutually exclusive a lot of the time.

I think back on this interaction a lot. It's so bizarre, I don't even know who's at fault, or if anyone's at fault. Are they hipsters? Was it a slight? Did Rollins overreact? Was he right to overreact in order to preempt further slighting? Is Rollins down to earth, super full of himself, both, or neither? Would everyone involved still behave the way they did if they'd known how this got lame and weird fast? It's confusing and unpleasant how confusing it is. I can't possibly form an opinion on the events. Even saying "Henry gets mocked by local hipsters at the record store and fights back immediately" only very loosely describes what actually happened. In the literal sense, that is exactly what Rollins seemed to think in the moment. It's just a very confusing episode of a short, awkward social situation where something maybe happened, but then nothing happened, because a bunch of animals made some noises at each other and moved around. I don't like thinking of human beings like that. I don't see how I can look at this excerpt and think anything else.

rodrigo sarpi - Listen to him describe what everyone else in the store allegedly thinks about him. 'They think I'm an old sell-out. They think I'm bourgeois.' And then he has to confront them, to condescend and put them in their place. He can't just walk away thinking 'I'm Henry Rollins. They are just a bunch of kids - whatever, doesn't matter what they think of me.' He's clearly bothered, he clearly cares what they think, and I would say, his comments and behavior are indicative of insecurity.
@cadenpardo7795
@cadenpardo7795 7 жыл бұрын
For what it's worth, I think the behavior in the video did indicate she was mocking him. We can presume a friend told her Rollins was there, to which we hear her respond from the other room "HENRY ROLLINS IS HERE?!" in a deliberately conspicuous fashion, followed by group laughter. She clearly wanted him to hear that. The video cuts to some minutes later, and I think during that timespan if an idol of mine was at a record shop I frequent I'd perhaps make an approach, or respectfully wait to catch them on their way out. Instead during those several minutes, she saw her initial passive wisecrack didn't incite the reaction she had hoped for, so she made a second one yelling "Get in the van!" I think after that second remark Rollins decided to give her the reaction she sought. From there you can argue all day as to who won the ensuing verbal tiff, but I think if you objectively follow the whole interaction, regardless of your personal disposition you may have towards Henry or the hipster chick, she was pretty clearly talkin' some shit. And if she wasn't, she sucks at being a fan, because she sure made it seem like she was mocking him in another room but with the intention of him overhearing. The man is an icon, with an iconic temper. It makes sense. Who you think is in the right is another matter entirely.

I believe it was more on the snarky side after viewing it twice but I don't think she was trying to be all that mean. Rollins reaction was a little overboard but it's fucking Henry Rollins the guy is an intense dude who doesn't deal with bullshit very well. What do you expect.

She tried to be cool, but you can't just call out at Henry Rollins and then expect him to not be any kind of confrontational about it, even if you are being friendly. So he took it upon himself to confront that person and very quickly veer it back to it being her project and reminding people why they shouldnt be rude and heckle. They WERE actually heckling him! At first I did have the opinion that maybe Rollins was overreacting to an admiring fan, and then reading through the comments I considered the opposite argument that the girl was heckling him. But if you analyze the video a few times, they really were heckling him. The girl is in earshot of Rollins and the very second immediately after he says that the record store "caters to an elitist group of young people" ...the girl sarcastically hollered "Henry Rollins is here?!". and then as Rollins continues talking, she says "get in the van" at 1:15 and 1:17 , and then she can be heard louder saying "hey sweet tooth" ..."get in the van" twice again at 1:24 and 1:26. And then when he confronts them on it they have the neck to try tell him he's being paranoid, they don't even have the balls to own what they said to him. In reality these hipster girls took it personally when Rollins said the store caters to an elitist group of young people. They also seem to be offended that Rollins is filming in "their" record store.

Not to say that getting bullied as a child is the same _seriousness_ as any physical or mental impairment, but it is still an impairment. Does it make any more sense to talk about such an overreaction being "hard to watch," except in the same way it's hard to watch a combat veteran overreact to fireworks or unexpected physical touch?

True but I think one has to cut some slack. If she was a fan she was probably just very excited, acted on impulse, and meant no harm nor insult. If anything this was a good learning experience for her when encountering the same situation from that point on.

People really are missing the point here. It is obvious Henry is insecure, he has a large ego, that same ego got him famous! The famous fights when he was young was that ego! Guess what though, the negative energy that these girls were giving out is truly amazing. Here you have one girl that is inspired by him and the other end of the spectrum a couple girls who are laughing at him. It's cheap shots at someone who has spent his whole life trying to educate himself, keep himself in shape and trying to inspire others. I never would have done that, I would have given him a firm handshake and said thank you. He could have handled the situation better but in all honesty these girls were just trying to get a rise out of him.

I'm currently reading "Get in the Van." I think it's one of the most crazy, fucked up, documentations of anyone who was ever in a rock band. In his youth Henry tried to act tough and cool all the time - he takes it seriously, and that's why it's so hilarious.

I mean that in the best way. The punk scene was still in it's infancy when he joined. They were playing basements and backwater clubs, that were pretty scary at the time. Just about every other show was shut down by the police, and they beat the fans up or vice versa. Then half the time the band was being beaten up by skin heads, or again - vice versa. People would go to the shows just to get into fights with the band, because they were bored or had nothing else to do. They would even get in fights with other bands. Henry would sometimes stab himself with glass, or cause himself pain just for the hell of it. Then he might just punch someone, just on a whim for no reason. Just because he felt like it. The band was constantly in and out of the hospital and in and out of jail. They were either in stitches or in hand cuffs, sometimes both. As if that wasn't enough, they literally starved, in abject living conditions, constantly tired from driving and sleeping on the floor. Their van always broke down. They lived from second to second, and day to day. Henry lived this way for six years, but Greg Ginn was doing it years even before that. They had to sometimes sneak into restaurants and finish people's plates when they got up and left, because they didn't have any money for food. All for the glory of punk rock. That's a pretty fucked up way to tour. I know it can get worse, but most bands wouldn't even think about doing that today.

The first part of this was edited, so his full commentary cannot be properly judged. But from what was given, it is obvious that they picked the fight with Henry because he came in with an obnoxious, boisterous attitude. He comes in and fills the room with his critical words and tone, and then he goes on to give a bullshit explanation for why he felt like he was being laughed at, which is why they finally yelled get in the van. He just made himself look like an ass clown. She even tells him he is being paranoid when he confronts them. It had nothing to do with his age, fame, or what he stands for.

Henry Rollins is the king hipster. "Better-than-you" attitude, only listens to indie, underground music and stops mid-sentence to think of a 10-character word to back up his intelligence. But I know people who say I'm a hipster and I proclaim hate for hipsters, which is apparently one of the most-common symptoms of Hipsteria, a symptom Rollins also shows. Put two hipsters in a room together and watch self-inflated egos clash. I'm a huge fan of Black Flag and Henry's spoken word, but I'm sure if he and I were to meet, one of us would conclude the other was a douchebag within a few minutes and a bitter bitchfest would ensue, since Rollins doesn't fight fans anymore and I don't carry the cajones to swing at the man who sang "Loose Nut".
