UPDATE: Henry's fundraiser has wrapped up after achieving all its goals AND THEN SOME. Thanks to all who donated! Please follow Henry's future on his KZbin channel!
Important correction: Dr Girum explained to me that Henry was among the first to receive befaquiline but not the first. He was the first to receive a different med that allowed him to safely take bedaquiline. I’m sorry for the error.
Thanks so, so much to Henry for his openness and generosity and friendship, and to Dr. Girum Tefera and his colleagues at Lakka for working so relentlessly in difficult circumstances to advocate for and treat people living with TB. Thanks also to everyone at Partners in Health for introducing to me to Henry and to their incredibly important work with TB survivors.

" 'But he's just one kid!' Tell that to his mom." John, in just once sentence you can capture a sentiment so deeply missing in the conversations being had. You and everyone you touch and raise up make every second of this hellscape on earth worth it.

It's like the analogy of the starfish. John said that line, and it was all I could think about. If you haven't heard the analogy of the starfish before: A huge storm hits a costal town hard, and when the winds die back and the oceans recede, there are left thousands upon thousands of starfish laid strewn across the beach, washed up in the storm. The sun's come out, and the starfish are drying out and dying. An old man stands nearby, shaking his head at the carnage, when he sees a young boy on the beach, going along, picking up one starfish at a time and taking them down to the water. The old man calls out, "What are you doing, boy? Look around, there are thousands of starfish. They will die before you can possibly save them all. You won't make any difference." The boy releases another starfish, turns to the old man, and replies, "Well, I made a difference for that one."

While I agree that situations like this are frustrating, are you sacrificing all you can spare beyond what you need to survive to help people like Henry? After all, it doesn't take that much! I venture to guess that the answer is no, you do not, but you're angered that others don't do exactly that.

@@watcherofwatchers Making assumptions about others is unbecoming. I fully agree with Kaseywahl and I live hand to mouth. I only own the equipment like my phone and PC because they earn me more money than they cost, and I still live hand to mouth. I live without heating or cooling. I have lived without windows and a leaky roof. I have lived in leaky tents with no bed. I've spent many days with single meals of hotsauce and bread, or unseasoned rice. Even so, where possible, I choose to buy from stores and brands that support charities and are ethical. When I'm doing well, I donate money. I support indipendant contractors, developers and workers to help both them and the economy. To denounce Kasey taking that stance with that assumption is to denounce me with that assumption. It dissuades people from even trying , because no matter what they do, people like you are around the corner making them feel awful for starting at all. It would be wonderful if we could all ignore the jerks in the world, but that doesn't justify you making it harder for them.

@@neicu34 I do not need to offer an alternative solution while criticizing the convenient anger that people express that OTHER people have not sacrificed their own resources and comfort when that person has not done the same. JOHN! JOHN COME ON I HAVE TO WORK TODAY! I was not prepared for this level of feels at 8AM my guy!!! With a video title like "Henry", I was expecting you to clown on Hank or something. Seriously though, I'm so glad Henry is alive. Seeing him as a tiny little TB-ravaged 16 year old and then again as a strong adult shook me to my core. I'm subbed to his channel, and I can't wait to see his insights and daily life. John, one of the beautiful things about your writing is the way that you humanize the biggest, scariest, heaviest questions in life. How to take care of yourself when your own mind is your worst enemy. How to stare death in the eye and still love. And you manage to do that for real life issues as well, like TB and infant and maternal health. Your videos and books are a reminder that at its best, writing is a technology designed to spread compassion and love. Thank you for all that you do.

I also deeply appreciate John specifying the "I talk to Henry regularly" part of this story. I feel like so much voluntourism and missionary charity is just poverty porn and individual stories like this are tokenized, but, and I could be wrong, this truly seems to me like this one guy on the internet who made a really great friend. I know PIH does what they can on a systemic level but I can't help but observe that when the green brothers pick a small scale individual person to reach out to, it feels significantly less exploitative and content-farm-ey than anyone else online

I was one of the people who was skeptical that the 4-minute rule should be lifted forever, but this was the video that convinced me it should. I felt the 4-minute rule was part of the spirit of vlogbrothers for the years I've been watching the videos. But you, John, were one of the many people who taught me one of the most valuable lessons I've ever learned: that the spirit of things is what we make of it. This video _felt_ like a vlogbrothers video not because it felt four minutes long, but because it made good use of my time, while also feeling like what use was made of that time was so much more than I had expected it would be. I've been around yours and Hank's work since I was 11 (I'm 21 now), and you both continue to amaze me in how powerful stories can be, be they 4 minutes, a couple of hours, hundreds of pages, or whatever, long. I also have not cried this much to a KZbin video in quite a while -- and your videos have made me cry several (I mean _several_ ) times. Vlogbrothers was never about the 4 minutes, I now realize. Because the spirit of vlogbrothers is what we make it to be. It has changed a lot, as we all have, and I'm so glad to be here for all of it.

It's a difficult conflict in my head of being awe inspired by the effort that Doctor Tefera (I apologise for any misspelling) and Henrys mother put into saving "just" one child and being incredibly saddened that this much HAD to be done in order to save "just" one child. You'll always see an inspirational story of how people moved mountains to achieve the impossible, but then once the happy feeling settles, you notice it had no need to be impossible in the first place. That mountain could very easily have stayed a molehill. The story of treating Henry had a happy ending and I'm glad you shared it with us, John. I'm just sad it needed to be a story in the first place.

This makes my heart happy! Way to go, Henry! ❤️ John, did you know they use the inactive TB virus to treat bladder cancer? It was used on my dad, and worked well for several years. Additionally, his mother (my beautiful Mamaw) had TB in the late 70s/early 80s.

John, so many people have obsessions that are a harm to themselves, others, or online communities. Thank you for using that tendency in yourself for good. Thank you for your tenaciousness, compassion, and for sharing some of the reasons (and a person) behind those things. As others said, this made me tear up... in a good way. Thank you.

You and Hank are amazing. The positive effect you are having on the world is truly inspiring. Crash Course changed my life, I am a mature aged disabled student at uni because I was introduced to the incredible subject of philosophy. The work you do in all your endeavours will leave the world better than you found it. It’s an effect I could only dream of doing. Thank you again for your commitment and contributions in so many areas. ❤❤❤

I've become more and more disenchanted with life lately, seeing all its difficult hurdles as impossible to overcome. I wasn't in a mood for an emotional story, and when the content of the video was clear I thought to leave because I wasn't ready for it. I'm glad I stayed. I'm glad Henry made it. I know not everyone does, but seeing this achievement, despite all the impossible hurdles, I think it really restored some of my faith in human resilience.

I work as a public mental health professional in an under-resourced country (we have 1 MHP for every population of 100,000). This story gave me so much hope and John's interest in TB has helped me move forward in contributing to understanding severe mental illness caused by social vulnerability with renewed motivation. Thanks John.

Thank you for sharing Henry's story. I'm now crying in the school pick up line waiting for my daughter to get out. We've struggled with health insurance for my Ankylosing Spondylitis. And my daughter has needed physical therapy for an acute problem. The US insurance is awful but if something happens to your child there are many sources of financial aid, at least in north eastern Kansas. All children around the world should have access to good medical care and their families shouldn't lose their home because of it. I'm glad Henry is well and hope he continues to do well!

I am in absolute tears at this video. I'm in nursing school. I hope to someday make a difference in visiting countries to help. It's a stretch but I'm going to try. Henry and many others like him just touch my heart so much. I wish I could hurry up nursing school so I could just go already. Healthcare is a human right.

I think this is an important look at places like Sierra Leone. There are struggles. The fight for important, life-saving treatments like you mentioned are one of them. But people in Sierra Leone are not helpless, shoeless people. They have businesses and friends and communities and lives that a lot of missionaries and reporters who visit Africa aren't keen on reporting. I'm very interested in seeing Henry's youtube channel. Thank you for sharing.
