It's like the analogy of the starfish. John said that line, and it was all I could think about. If you haven't heard the analogy of the starfish before: A huge storm hits a costal town hard, and when the winds die back and the oceans recede, there are left thousands upon thousands of starfish laid strewn across the beach, washed up in the storm. The sun's come out, and the starfish are drying out and dying. An old man stands nearby, shaking his head at the carnage, when he sees a young boy on the beach, going along, picking up one starfish at a time and taking them down to the water. The old man calls out, "What are you doing, boy? Look around, there are thousands of starfish. They will die before you can possibly save them all. You won't make any difference." The boy releases another starfish, turns to the old man, and replies, "Well, I made a difference for that one."

While I agree that situations like this are frustrating, are you sacrificing all you can spare beyond what you need to survive to help people like Henry? After all, it doesn't take that much! I venture to guess that the answer is no, you do not, but you're angered that others don't do exactly that.

@@watcherofwatchers Making assumptions about others is unbecoming. I fully agree with Kaseywahl and I live hand to mouth. I only own the equipment like my phone and PC because they earn me more money than they cost, and I still live hand to mouth. I live without heating or cooling. I have lived without windows and a leaky roof. I have lived in leaky tents with no bed. I've spent many days with single meals of hotsauce and bread, or unseasoned rice. Even so, where possible, I choose to buy from stores and brands that support charities and are ethical. When I'm doing well, I donate money. I support indipendant contractors, developers and workers to help both them and the economy. To denounce Kasey taking that stance with that assumption is to denounce me with that assumption. It dissuades people from even trying , because no matter what they do, people like you are around the corner making them feel awful for starting at all. It would be wonderful if we could all ignore the jerks in the world, but that doesn't justify you making it harder for them.

@@neicu34 I do not need to offer an alternative solution while criticizing the convenient anger that people express that OTHER people have not sacrificed their own resources and comfort when that person has not done the same. "Tell that to his mother" busted me open. Everyone tells you that you will love your children more than anything, but I didn't understand until my son was born that love isn't always a pleasant feeling. It's a desperate hope to protect and preserve them and despair at knowing you'll fail in ways big and small. So important to remember that mothers around the world love their children just as deeply as I love mine.

I'm on the mailing list of an Indian organization similar to GoFundMe, and I got a message last year about a 3-year-old boy who needed a bone marrow transplant to save his life from an immune deficiency. The way the kid talked about his fear of recurring hospitalizations (which started as nosebleeds) as "the monster is coming again" just killed me. My own son was the same age and it was all too easy to imagine him in that situation. It stuck with me for months, and if I had the $30K he needed I probably would have called the hospital in India and paid for the surgery. Even though $30K could be better spent helping many other kids whose stories I hadn't read yet.

When dealing with charity work on that scale, it's often infeasible to really care about an individual when there's so much else that has to be helped. I'm so happy that, if just this once, an organization was able to suspend the pragmatism to make a change that's truly valuable to Henry and his mother.

I also deeply appreciate John specifying the "I talk to Henry regularly" part of this story. I feel like so much voluntourism and missionary charity is just poverty porn and individual stories like this are tokenized, but, and I could be wrong, this truly seems to me like this one guy on the internet who made a really great friend. I know PIH does what they can on a systemic level but I can't help but observe that when the green brothers pick a small scale individual person to reach out to, it feels significantly less exploitative and content-farm-ey than anyone else online

I'm subbed to his channel, and I can't wait to see his insights and daily life. John, one of the beautiful things about your writing is the way that you humanize the biggest, scariest, heaviest questions in life. How to take care of yourself when your own mind is your worst enemy. How to stare death in the eye and still love. And you manage to do that for real life issues as well, like TB and infant and maternal health. Your videos and books are a reminder that at its best, writing is a technology designed to spread compassion and love. Thank you for all that you do.

This is a great example with how a single person's story, while only one of millions with similar stories, can really help drive support and inspire people to fix the problem. TB and so many other things feel so overwhelming and too much to even understand or be sympathetic about because it's just too much. And then you see someone like Henry. A single person, a story we care about, a person we empathize for and desperately hope that John has a happy outcome for with his TB treatments. We celebrate his win and feel inspired to help bring more of those to people. Henry is just one of millions. But he is also one of millions that we can do something about, remembering that out of a million, every single one of those numbers that make up these overwhelming numbers is a person. Just as unique and complex as Henry, and just as worth helping and supporting and working together to make their lives better. Thank you John for bringing this story to us (and finally explaining your obsession!) and thank you to everyone working to decrease world suck. We will make this world better, one person at a time!

as a student doctor and a nerd fighter hearing your obsession with TB has really taught me the infuriating challenges people are dealing with despite this illness having a cure. I see patients suffering daily with no cure, and to know that if someone lived in a different place or had a different socioeconomic status they would have a cure. Thank you for sharing Henry’s story with us John. It’s stories you share that help us all stay hopeful. ❤

On days when I'm wallowing in self pity, cursing life and doom scrolling social media, you come in John to remind me to wake up and move. You remind me why it is important to care beyond myself and my inner circle, why it's rewarding to continue to make efforts to improve ourselves, our society and the world at large. Thank you (and Hank) for creating a community where we can come together to make substantial efforts to leave the world a little better than we found it. To help as many Henrys as we possibly can.

It’s both incredibly upsetting and comforting to see how much bigger Henry was after beating the TB. It’s wonderful to see him be the strong, healthy young man he deserves to be and it’s deeply disheartening to realise just how much the disease was ravaging his body. He is a braver man than many of us will ever have to be and it so deeply unfair that he was forced to be brave because of where he was born.

I was one of the people who was skeptical that the 4-minute rule should be lifted forever, but this was the video that convinced me it should. I felt the 4-minute rule was part of the spirit of vlogbrothers for the years I've been watching the videos. But you, John, were one of the many people who taught me one of the most valuable lessons I've ever learned: that the spirit of things is what we make of it. This video _felt_ like a vlogbrothers video not because it felt four minutes long, but because it made good use of my time, while also feeling like what use was made of that time was so much more than I had expected it would be. I've been around yours and Hank's work since I was 11 (I'm 21 now), and you both continue to amaze me in how powerful stories can be, be they 4 minutes, a couple of hours, hundreds of pages, or whatever, long. I also have not cried this much to a KZbin video in quite a while -- and your videos have made me cry several (I mean _several_ ) times. Vlogbrothers was never about the 4 minutes, I now realize. Because the spirit of vlogbrothers is what we make it to be. It has changed a lot, as we all have, and I'm so glad to be here for all of it.

It is so rare in life that I am brought to tears with joy, but it is so frequent in nerdfighteria. Thank you for the hope and the community- here's to always giving five more dollars when we can, or five more minutes of thought to a cause.

It's a difficult conflict in my head of being awe inspired by the effort that Doctor Tefera (I apologise for any misspelling) and Henrys mother put into saving "just" one child and being incredibly saddened that this much HAD to be done in order to save "just" one child. You'll always see an inspirational story of how people moved mountains to achieve the impossible, but then once the happy feeling settles, you notice it had no need to be impossible in the first place. That mountain could very easily have stayed a molehill. The story of treating Henry had a happy ending and I'm glad you shared it with us, John. I'm just sad it needed to be a story in the first place.

A wonderfully hopeful video ❤️ I just want to say that I’m in South Africa. TB is a problem but the greatest concern is people starting treatment which is really unpleasant. For a number of reasons (they live far from treatment centers or they feel too ill to go back) many stop the treatment prematurely. This, over and above anything else allows the illness to evolve, causing drug-resistant TB. It is a huge problem. Henry may have done everything right, but contracted the drug-resistant strain. It’s sad and the mantra needs to be “never stop the TB treatment prematurely” and the explanation why this is crucial. If you’ve said this already elsewhere, my apologies.
