This is the movie editing experiment. I used stabilization function of Final Cut Pro to remove the background movements from the clip. Now, you can see the real movements of the trike in the turbulent air. The clip is made from the flight David and I landed at Livermore near San Francisco.

The way that the image-stabilization software isolates the trike movement, indicates how it actually feels to fly in such cruddy turbulence. Love the way you relaxed through it and became a good dampening, non-overreacting, shock-absorber pilot! You set it down nicely near centerline, anyways. (and probably happy to be back on the ground) Great piloting skill!

One of the downsides to very low wing loading, as on ultralights and other very slow aircraft, is the extreme response to gusts. I remember back in my USAF days when I was used to flying B-52s (very heavy wing loading) and flying for hours at low altitude with a relatively smooth ride, I then rented a Cessna 172 on Kawaii to take my wife on a tour of Waimea canyon. The turbulence, which would have been quite bearable in a B-52, with over 100lbs/sqft wing loading or helicopter (remember that the rotary "wing" on a helicopter is very heavily loaded) was brutal in the 172 with it's 10lbs/sqft wing loading. I finally gave up and just flew around the island and, even then, the turbulence made the ride no fun at all. Think about it this way. When flying an aircraft with a flaps up stall speed of maybe 200 knots (loaded B-52), a 10 knot gust only represents 5% of the airspeed necessary to fly. In an ultralight with a stall speed of 20 knots that same 10 knot gust is 50% of flying speed.

good move....an airsick wife would be no fun. What are the take off, stall, cruising and landing speeds of the big bird?
@billjuhasz3875
@billjuhasz3875 8 жыл бұрын
Generally we took off at max gross weight of 488,000 lbs. At that weight we rotated at 160KIAS. Landings were always done at about 25,000lbs fuel and no weapons, so roughly 205,000 lbs, with target touchdown speeds of 120KIAS . Full stalls were not allowed as they will cause minor airframe damage (not sure what would have been damaged) but the approach to stall (buffet) with flaps up at close to gross weight was over 200KIAS. Cruising was always done at 0.77Mach. On an actual mission (thank god we never flew an actual mission) altitude would we slowly increased (up to roughly 55,000 feet) to stay at best range airspeed Low level (no longer done) was done at 280KIAS average. Vne (maximum allowed airspeed) was 390KIAS or .88mach (depending on which you reached first). Generally we had enough power to exceed Vne or Vmo (limiting airspeed or mach number) in level flight.

thank you for the interesting info and for your service...I was one of those kept safe during the cold war. I seem to recall a lot of dark smoke during takeoff....was that just the nature of those engines or maybe just a bad memory?
@billjuhasz3875
@billjuhasz3875 8 жыл бұрын
lw216316 The J57 used on all but the last version of the B-52 (the H model used the TF-33, a turbofan update of the J-57 turbojet) had the capability to use water injection on takeoff for extra thrust. Water injection was not always used for takeoff (it depended on takeoff weight, temperature and runway length) but when water injection was used the engines made a bunch of black smoke. The engines were fairly low smoke under most other conditions, though not as low smoke as a modern turbine engine. As a side note. There was a horrible B-52 crash at Mather AFB in the early 80s where a pair of B-52s were doing a MITO (minimum interval take off). The first aircraft was not using water injection (might have been an H model) and the second aircraft was using water injection. Because of the extra thrust the number two aircraft began to overtake number one. Instead of turning to stop the overtake the number two aircraft pulled power to slow down. The water injection was supposed to shut off when power was pulled but the system did not work properly and all eight engines flooded out (too much water, not enough fuel). The pilots tried to restart the engines but they were too close to the ground and ended up crashing just past the runway. The really sad thing was that 6 of the 9 people in that plane that day were within ejection parameters and likely would have survived if they had ejected. Besides the pilots being overloaded at the time, they were likely concerned that ordering the crew to eject would have meant certain death for the 3 extra crew members who were not in ejection seats that day (only the primary crew members have ejection seats, the instructors, instructor pilot, instructor navigator, and defence instructor positions are not on an ejection seat since they are not normally on board during combat). The MITO rules were changed after that to require all aircraft in the takeoff string to be using water injection, or all to not be using water injection (though it is possible to do a mixed water no water takeoff safely). Today there are only H models flying so this is a non-issue (no water injection).

@Vladimir Putin Yeah, that's pretty much always the case with ultralights and microlights of all types, they have a disproportionate number of accidents, but it's seldom due to actual mechanical failure. The type of people who get into this sport typically have a higher than normal appetite for risk, coupled with the very low training requirements and restrictions in most countries and, well, there ya go!

Nice work. Well done. Rochester, NY, is like this airport, always a crosswind, always turbulence on final. There was once a flight school there, subsidized by a wealthy realtor. He kept the cost down to $25 an hour! That's for the Cherokee training aircraft AND the instructor pilot. So I went, damn the winds. I remember once I was coming in the tower gave us our choice of either end of the runway! Winds were gusting in at maybe 10, IIRC, perfectly perpendicular to the runway. "Take your pick."

+Henry TrikeLife good think to know the maximum G you can take in trike in air is +-2G and it can be demonstrated your trike take +6-4G so as long has you have air below have fun! I have been taken in a rotor in north of Roses Spain heading to Capcalera de l'Orlina, my trike was home made 21.5 square meter; single sided with 2l VW motor . max speed 60kmh min 37kmh I started with the wind in my back and climb this trike was climbing very fast: suddenly I start to see my left wing hardly push up, it was just the beginning! I was a strong guy 1.85 98kg but taking the bar full on the left I could not put my plane flat I have register positions at 90 degrees !!! Of course the attitude of the plane was totally hieratic it last for 10 minutes I was exhausted and finally the calm I was at 2500 meters and only then I start to feel the cold. No GPS at that time by looking closely down I start to understand that I was heading to NNW and moving SE !!! LOLOLOL this situation was very uncomfortable since I was already on top of the sea . I had to go down immediately I decide to down the throttle and to sleep on the side to go down fast, again the feeling to be a ball in rugby match I could see my big wings taking strange form this time it take only 5 minutes to cross the rotor. Explanation in spain at below 700m the wind was heading south at 20kmh but on top it was the Tramontane heading NEat 80kmh and maybe more. Since I did make this plane I knew that it was strong but I can testify how strong it is, (your plane is much stronger and the wing is smaller) So unless you did not check the safety and the loop of your cable you are safe no matter what till you have air bellow. Your plane will never break!!! Your landing is the correct landing, I always use it since I have been victim of a wind burst and it was because I was high speed that i did not end on the floor It become trendy to make approach 5 degrees , this is BS we are light plane not Boeing, safe at high speed high altitude, unsafe low speed low altitude. To land obviously we must be low altitude no need to be low speed on top of it LOLOLOL

Nice work with that landing. I agree with you that the turbulence-induced movements of the aircraft may look extreme and scary but really, they're not especially dangerous and the craft is completely under control by a competent airman. Those telephoto shots of passenger planes landing in brisk crosswinds, etc aren't nearly as out of control as it appears.

Gee. You are one cool, calm and collected pilot. If that were me, I would have crashed from the turbulence. Great job in the tough conditions.

Did you land with another airplane still on the runway?

That’s no problem if you can keep safe distance with another aircraft.

That's a lot of moving in that ultralight. Nice job controlling and landing so well...

The wing on a trike absorbs most of the turbulence and the trike was not moving around as much as it appeared. A fixed wing plane of similar wing loading would have been moving around far more than the trike.

If i was that pilot that would of been my final flight in that thing. That may have started out as turbulence but a rhythm/pattern was forming. An oscillation. If that trike starts to oscillate like that and is aided by the wind..... It will be a bad day.

I would like to believe I would have abort the landing and perform a going around. I have one question though, was that another trike landing in front of you cause it looks like there is something else there on the runway?
