Sat next to Gary Fisher on a flight to Germany once. We talked about bikes for 2 hours. Super nice guy. Never knew he was a Cat 1 roadie back in his prime before being part of the original founders of mountain biking. Also lived next to the offices of Ritchey components in San Carlos. So many founders of America’s cycling come from the Bay Area.

Well I rode with an Olympic kilometer rider often. Trouble was although selected to USA team, we didn't send any athletes that year. I could only extrapolate the power it would take to match his acceleration! He's alive and well living near Lehigh Valley velodrome in PA.

Gary Fisher is a pretty swell fella. 2 years ago I had to fly halfway around the world to see my mom who was in hospice care. It was a pretty tense trip to say the least. My final connection was at O'Hare in Chicago. As I was running from the international terminal to my domestic connection through the underground looooooong moving sidewalks I spotted this fella up ahead with a pinstripe suit and hat and Timbuk2 bag. Immediately I knew it was Gary. I had very little time to get my connecting flight, but as I ran past him, I said "Gary!" Then I slowed down, went back, and asked for a selfie. He happily obliged. After we got the photo I thanked him, and wildly mumbled something about being afraid I'd miss my connection. Gary said something like "No way man, you've got this." And I made it with seconds to spare. He has no idea about the inner tension I had on that trip, or what my story was, but the genuine kindness he showed in the 90 seconds we interacted made my stressful trip somehow cooler or more tolerable. We should all be a bit more like Gary.

Back in the early 80's when MTB events were still relaxed with no real pro scene I'd run into Gary and the other "Pioneers" in NorCal and southern Oregon. They were cool we were all relaxed and life was good....on really heavy steel bikes. I'm glad he has kept his calm.

Mt. Tam. Thanks for the video. It brought back memories of my one and only Mt. Tam ride back in the late 90's (maybe 2000). From the looks of it, I climbed the same road as you guys. I was out there on a business trip, and stayed with a very good friend in Tiburon. I landed at the airport, rented a car and when I pulled up to his house, he was waiting for me in his driveway with 2 MTB’s loaded on his car. We drove to the base of Mt. Tam (I don’t recall exactly where). The ride was in early spring and I live in the Washington, DC area and didn't ride much in the winter so I was in no riding shape. At one point a runner passed me going up the climb. The runner, on his way back down, told me that my buddy said to “Hurry up” 😊. That day we had sun, snow flurries, cloud/fog and rain. The coolest part is when we rode above the cloud / fog and the views were just amazing! Again, Thanks for bringing back some great memories. Keep up the great vids!

You had me catapulted out of my lounger at 13.10. Wow. Ms Cools descending is a rockchick with that pulsating beat in the background! My Mini was a '66 F reg. '67 was E reg, so that Mini Cooper (in British Racing Green btw) is a 'G reg '68. Love the hummingbirds. Love that ride. Keep 'em coming Mr Berry we're all in the Covid19 slammer over here in the UK

How comes '66 and '67 were the 'wrong' way around, so to speak? Forgive me if I'm getting confused, I'm a child of the '90s so the letter at the beginning of the reg makes more sense in my head!

Another from England here. Although the scenery is great in your videos, the bikes are the stars for me. Steel frames, downtube shifters, drops and big smooth tyres on one bike is rare over here and I'm always inspired to convert one of my steel frames to a UK equivalent of your bikes. Love the inspiration Mr Wildeberry.

Funny enough, my first Mt bike was also a Specialized, an entry level stumpjumper in 1989? I hadn’t been riding bikes since about age 16 in the south of France where i grew up and upon moving to SF a friend introduced me to Mt Biking, that was it! I was hooked and have been ever since. Your pronunciation was correct...Hoo-Koo-E-Koo. I’m a former Tam Ranger and that was my exact patrol area for years. If it wasn’t for the horrible MMWD and their insane focus on treating bicyclists like criminals, I probably would have retired there. I too met Gary Fisher, let’s just say at a trailhead, and heck no, no ticket. The fact that my bike at the time was a Gary Fisher Big Sur, there was no way, he had a pass.

Great touchstones to the whole mountain biking lore. I learned to ride on Schwinn paper boy coasters, then Windsor road bikes. Nothing for a decade, then in my mid thirty’s, 86, a co worker showed up with a Trek Single Track Series. I was hooked for every more. I have a Trek 84 ST that is my Wyoming winter bike.

My first MTB was a 1996 Gary Fisher Mamba. I loved that bike! I still have it although it's been hanging in my garage unridden for many years. That shot of you and Ms. Cools relaxing on the porch enjoying the view with the humming birds and breeze was great. Having visted the San Franciso area last year I was able to more put my self there with you. I hope you didn't offend the Cools one with that "clunker" label. LOL. Hi Folks, Thanks for this delightful video. Mt. Tam is tied to the origin of modern mountain biking. The site of one of the earliest downhill mtb races - the "Repack". Supposedly named that because you needed to repack wheel bearings by the time you reached the bottom. This ride on my absolute must do list. Cheers, Everyone

It should have been entitled cycling up grades, as the upgrades lent me to think that Ms. Cools had made some upgrades to here bike or kit. Solid video in these crazy times. Let me know when the Ms Cools fan club forms. I would totally love to see Ms. Cools dong some MTB action on a full sus mtb. Now that would be a cycling video I would repost.

I remember seeing the Fischer Hoo Koo E Koo in a bicycling magazine sometime in the mid/late 80's and wanting one based off just the name. I always assumed it was named for a mountain, and that mountain was named by native Americans. I don't have any idea where my reasoning for the name lineage comes from. I seem to recall other Fischer models being named after more recognizable mountains at the time, and that probably lead me down that path. I've always pronounced it the same way you do... "Who Kew E Kew".

Henry, the colour scheme on the mini, which looks like a MK2 from mid sixties, and therefore your cycle is British Racing Green. This colour was adopted by British motor racing teams I think before WW2 up until early sixties. Good choice.

Hi Henry, I recently found your channel and like it very much. Very good combination of information and vlog/documentation. At the moment I am building my own randonneur/travel bike and I maybe want to use the Velo Orange triple crank. Can you tell me what combination of front/rear derailleur and bottem bracket Ms. Cools has on her bike? Do you know if the crank is usable with a standard tripe road derailleur? I would be very thankful if you can provide this information to me.

Mtn Bike trivia for $200: The tribe of Indians formerly inhabiting the Tamalpais region called themselves Hoo-koo-e-ko. Their territory extended from the Golden Gate northerly to Valley Ford Creek, and from Point Reyes Peninsula easterly to the Petaluma marshes and San Pablo Bay, thus coinciding almost exactly with the boundaries of the present county of Marin. *Google "indian names in the Tamalpais region". The 2nd link from Berkeley is easier to read and shows the accent on the 1st and 3rd syllables. Not to be confused with Beatles lyrics: Goo goo ga joob . . . I am the walrus or Simon/Garfunkle: Coo co cachoo, Ms Robinson But I do believe it was the reference for Ibis' parody name "Hakkalugi". Like MORON tubing (more on the ends) in response to Ritchey Logic and Columbus Genius. Anyway, hope you guys are well. *Remember I have the Cannondale Mtn Tandem your size if you ever want to borrow for a while. best, Kevin, (over near Annadel . . . which is also totally closed)

Is that an optical illusion or is your leather saddle pitched distinctly upwards? I've seen level or pitched slightly downwards but never intentionally upwards like that on any bike set up I can recall.
@josephburke1842
@josephburke1842 4 жыл бұрын
According to Brooks that is considered level - a Brooks saddle is “level” based on placing a level front to back on the seat. This results in the nose of the seat pointing slightly up. Level is not based on the nose of the saddle being level. When I found that out, I was surprised. But when I positioned my seat that way, it became super comfortable. It cradles you. Go figure.

Music on this channel is good. So many others have bland youtube intended junk. This guy obviously gives some thought and tasteful discrimintion to it, he chooses stuff he likes and feels suits the mood of the imagery, rather than making do with aural wallpaper contrived by marketing clones. But then again my musical taste encompasses Amon Duul, Beefheart, Can, Ozics, Doors, Spirit, J M Jarre, Natacha Atlas, Jah Wobble, Marillion-Fish, amongst others.
