This just cleared my 4 year half cooked knowledge about portal circulation into a great dish. Thank you so much. Was about to go hit the hay but thought of studying some more and I've struck gold

I had a complex type b aortic dissection a few years ago, and needed 5 emergency stents placed via TEVAR. However, my hepatic artery is still occluded and has an fusiform aneurysm. They did not repair that one with all the others because there is so much redundancy with blood flow to the liver, and they didn't feel it was worth the risk with all of the other issues. I had severe liver dysfunction due to the physical trauma, and it was just too risky without enough reward... but that always confused me and made me uncomfortable! This explained that decision SO WELL. I now understand what they were talking about. So many things about my health weight heavy on my mind, but this one thing is now just a little bit lighter. I thank you greatly!! 💜

so the two capillary beds are both for perfusion of the liver? One is simply from the hepatic artery, the other the portal vein? The contents of each vary based on the source? Is that correct?

I don't know if this is something you would feel comfortable answering but my mom was diagnosed with Hepatic Artery Thrombosis. She's had no liver transplants or anything and doesn't drink. I've been trying to scramble for answers and have been massively unlucky with the doctors and general google searches. We have been left in a sort of limbo and are kind of at the mercy of blood thinners until the end of the month where they will then conduct a scan to see if the blood thinners have been working. I tried asking the doctors how serious this was and have gotten no decisive answer. I'm currently catastrophizing and a lot of it is due to my ignorance on this. Could this be treated? I don't know the survival rates of someone like my mother in this case who has had no transplant surgeries done but the numbers I do see for the transplant cases are terrifying. I didn't think I'd find myself coming to youtube to find an answer but like I said I'm desperate and no one else seems to have the answers we need.

Hi Dr. Mike, thank you for the very informative video. In separate teaching I have been told that Terlipressin (Vasopressin analogue) is given to treat portal hypertension. Can you explain how this works please?
@monicadiperna36562 жыл бұрын
Thank you Dr. Mike...can you add the renal artery? It comes off the abdominal aorta right after the celiac, right? Why did not you not include that? thank you!

I realize the blood dumps into the portal vein into the inferior vena cava bypassing the liver.
@usmarine212-ck7nr2 күн бұрын
Hello, Doctor. New subscriber here. Since the blood carrying nutrients from the liver is returned to the inferior vena cava bound to the right atrium. Do the nutrients get transferred to oxygenated arterioles at the alveolar level? Thank you.
@chelseyelqadi1386 Жыл бұрын
Dr. Mike, does the blood go through the liver before the kidneys? Wondering how the body “knows” to send blood with certain substances to the liver instead of the kidneys.
