Both cows and goats have udders, that's the bag that holds the milk. They both have teats, that's the part that hangs down you get the milk from. It looked to me like her injury is where the teat meets the udder. I'm currently raising goats and chickens and helping my daughter at her place with pigs and ducks. I plan to add rabbits later this summer. Through my life I have had goats, sheep, pigs, ducks, a pony, cows and rabbits.

Thanks for the “udder & teats” clarification.

So glad you shared this. I thought it was clear, but apparently not. Humans also have udders and teats but we usually call them breasts and nips. Weird the way we're just another one of the animals on the planet but we give special names to our own parts to trick people into thinking we're specialerest somehow.

Selah: I was just enjoying your milking and thinking that it will be your quiet place to think and pray and to sing to your goats. They love music and will give more milk. GOD bless you, dear girl. You are a gentle herdsman to your flock of geese and ducks and gentle with your goats. My daughter and I enjoy watching you with your charges. Thank you for the fine example you are to so many of us. We appreciate you.

Jess on roots and refuge uses olive oil on her hands when she milks her cow. She also rubs the teats with it when she’s done to moisturize them. Selah could give it a try to see if it helps. I would love to learn how to milk a goat or cow one day. Lol. Have a blessed day 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💕💕🐐👩🏻‍🌾

Both cows and goats have an udder (the whole thing) and teats ( where the milk comes out). Specifically cows have quarters (4 sections/compartments that produce milk) and goats have halves (2 sections/compartments that produce milk) each compartment requires a teat from which the milk can be extracted. ;)

I've made yogurt just about the same way. The difference is that once the culture is mixed in, I put the yogurt into jars and set the jars in a covered pot of warm water on the stove. Easy to monitor the temperature and increase as necessary. In about 8 hours, yogurt is ready.

The milk is 101 degrees when you milk so if you make the yogurt mediately it saves the heating step and then really is raw yogurt. My secret to keep it warm is my waterbed. It is a softer curd than cow milk.

We raise goats, chickens, ducks. But until recently I hadn't harvested any of the chickens and ducks(and once I process these ducks we won't replace them, my Wife doesn't care for duck). I do harvest the milk from our nannies, which we drink, make cheese and soap from. This last Year we a year old heifer and finished her then had her processed. We also made the decision to wether any bucklings we have this spring and process them. My Wife is an avid fisherman and we have wild caught fish at least once a week. Haven't tried making yogurt from my goat milk, but I have made pudding.

I'm new to raising 3 female Nigerian dwarf goats and love it! It's been 7 months and I'm still so nervous about everything and if I'm doing everything correct. I'm hoping to breed them this year and have them for dairy. I've been raising chickens for years and currently have 13 chickens. I also make yogurt for years now with raw milk I buy from a local farm. I don't heat it too much to keep the benefits of keeping it raw.

I use hobbles as well. They actually go above the hock. I know none of the pictures on the hobble sales pages show it but that's the way they work. The hobbles are supposed to disengage the tendon so the goat has to focus on standing vs kicking. Nice job on the yogurt. I still can't make one thick enough to my liking using goats milk.

Yep, I remember my Mom making yogurt. I like making plain yogurt smoothies, salad dressing, veggie dips and parfait with fruit & honey. I never liked it either until I made it my way lol. Can’t find one with lactobacillous *and* bifidarous anymore. We need both for homeostasis in our gut health. All plain ones in my store are the dreaded fat free, not whole milk. So I also use kombucha and ferments to supplement. I was wondering why you didn’t put Momma goat in the uncovered pen to begin with. Glad baby Cody has a nice cover too now.
