Great reaction! Both Edgar and his brother Johnny are albinos so their hair is genetic. Lol. Frankenstein was standard radio play when I was in junior/senior high school. Regrettably I never saw them live - this performance is way over the top!

Back in those days, lots of people, especially guys, went on and on about what a great guitarist Johnny Winter was. And he was really good, but there were a lot of good guitarists around. There was NOBODY like Edgar. There are so many small duets in this piece, and every one of them is tight as a tick. Can you even imagine the amount of rehearsal that went into this performance? God I love this song. At the end, when Edgar is playing the feedback loop, and the drummer is playing the drums, every band member is moving in time with them, even though it is often syncopated, not, syncopated, not. They all knew every note to a T. Miraculous musicianship.

I remember when I first heard this, the shorter version, on the radio back in the seventies. There's a couple other songs off that album, "They Only Come Out at Night", that got a lot of airplay. They were "Free Ride" and "Hanging Around". The short guy, in white, is Rick Derringer. Edgar still performs, in fact he has toured with Ringo Starr's All Star Band.

There's no question that this is a masterpiece of art-rock/prog rock (and this isn't even the regular guitarist - Ronnie Montrose was unable to perform here, so Edgar's producer Rick Derringer filled in) Edgar, obviously, is an impressive multi-instrumentalist, and used those skills to the full on this song. The song as it is played here is indeed a "Frankenstein" of sorts: the various themes in the song had been played as warm-up jams (referred to simply as "The Instrumental") at Edgar (and Johnny) Winter concerts - needing a final song for the album "They Only Come Out at Night", Edgar wanted a high-powered instrumental, and started splicing together reel-to-reel tape recordings of various performances. Drummer Chuck Ruff saw the apparent hacked and slashed tape all over, and said "Wow, man, it's like Frankenstein." ... and the song was named! As to Dee's question "Where do you go next?"? To Gentle Giant, of course! You can't imagine how we felt when this came out in '73. Was nothing like it at the time, and I was fortunate enough to get to see both the Edgar Winter Group and the Johnny Winter Group about a year apart in Nashville. Two fantastic concerts!

This song got its name from how it was pieced together in the studio from edited strips of recording tape. One of the members of the band suggested it was like Frankenstein. The song's origins came from the band jamming around several different versions of this during their performances. When it came time to record They Only Come Out at Night, the album on which this song appears, it was the last song they included (because they needed one more song to fill the album), but before that there had never been a specific version of the song.

My first concert ever was Edgar Winter's White Trash with the same lineup we've seen here (incl. Rick Derringer, a star in his own right) back in 1973. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. When they were doing this live at first they just called it the drum song When they finally decided to record it they realized it was way to long for an album cut So they set about editing it and the cut up pieces of tape strewn all over wondering how they were going to put it back together One of them said it's like Frankenstein and that's how it got its name...lol

Great reactions! Such a pleasure to see how much you enjoyed this as I did when I first saw The Edgar Winter Group live on Feb 3. 1973 at Winterland in San Francisco. The album had just been released in November '72. Unbelievable how they could perform Frankenstein live, and do it better than the studio version. Of course the hallucinogens of those times were very helpful in expanding the communal experience of the entire concert. Also, a big shout out to Rick Darrenger on guitar who also produced this song. My kids and I were privileged enough to see Edgar Winter live in 2017 as he and his band opened for Alice Cooper and even though he’s much older now, he still brings it and doesn’t hold back. He still has powerful vocals and still plays that keyboard with the strap, and still plays the sax and the drums and my kids and I were dumbfounded and stared at each other with our eyes wide open and mouths wide open. Edgar Winter plus Alice Cooper equals perfection.

What a talented guy edgar is. I started playing guitar when I was 4, keyboards at 6 & drums at 8. I can now play 7 different instruments and never had a lesson in my life. Edgar Winter strapped a keyboard into a keytar. If I recall due to Edgar and Johnny both having albinism it caused several vision defects and very high sensitivity to light and sun exposure. While their young school age friends were playing outdoors, Edgar and Johnny were forced to stay indoors. So their focus became playing and experimenting with an assortment of musical instruments

The inventor of the keytar. His twin brother Johnnie played a bit of guitar. Tommy Shannon was his bass player. Tommy then played bass for Stevie Ray Vaughn. If you want to hear Edgar sing try Tobacco Road live.

Edgar was the first person to take the legs off a keyboard and attach a guitar strap to it. Frankenstein's Monster was stitched together from different peoples body parts, Doctor Frankenstein's assistant Igor when stealing the proper brain, dropped the jar and then reached on a shelf and got the brain of a murder with the IQ of a child (honk - honk) during the synthesizer section, Dr. Frankenstein brought the Monster to life using lighting to power his machine. The guitarist in white was young Rick Derringer.

Edgar Winter is such a good sax player that he has been featured on recordings by a lot of top artists, playing the saxophone: Meat Loaf, Tina Turner, David Lee Roth, Todd Rundgren, and many others. The man is a monster, thus "Frankenstein" makes even more sense.

I was in the ninth grade when the song came out. My girlfriend asked me what my favorite song was and I said Frankenstein. She told me hers was Natural High, a love song. I felt kind of ridiculous telling her my favorite was Frankenstein after she told me that. I was supposed to tell her some kind of Love song. How can I remember that to this date? Rick produced and played guitar for Weird Al and he was also touring with Ringo Starr from The Beatles!

I’ve just recently heard this live version of this amazing number. Edgar and his brother Johnny are head and shoulders above today’s manufactured “musicians’. The state of music today is very sad. Imagine the difficulties they had to overcome being albinos in a time when there was no “political correctness “ to protect them.Thank you for your appreciation of these amazing musicians.

Those guys are and were stars on their own as well. The late bassist Dan Hartman wrote several songs to other artists and had a solo career as well. Guitarist Rick Derringer also has had successful career as solo artist and producer. On the recorded version the guitarist was Ronnie Montrose, another star quality guitarist and group leader.

Johnny and Edgar Winter are albinos, and they grew up in Texas. So, they couldn't go outside and play because the sun would not be kind to them. They stayed inside and learned to play MANY instruments. While they were still kids, their mother took them to New Orleans where BB King was playing and talked him into letting the boys jam with him. BB was impressed.
