This was actually the title song from a 1965 screwball-comedy film. Tom originally wasn't crazy about it because he didn't get it ("pussycat" was a common hipster term for women in the late '50s and early '60s), but he eventually did record it after being convinced by the song's writing team (the great Burt Bacharach/Hal David) ... and it ended up earning an "Original Song" Oscar nomination and became a hit single (#3 in the USA). It's a playful song very much of its time.

Technically not a 'Woody Allen Film', it was merely his first screenplay that got produced (Charles K. Feldman), directed by Clive Donner. Woody got his acting debut in it as a minor character. It starred Peter O'Toole, Peter Sellers, Capucine, Romy Schneider, Paula Prentiss, Ursula Andress, etc. 'Pussycat' was a beatnik term for one's female LOVER, or Sex Interest - hardly same as 'baby-girl', except for the pedophiles.

Tom Jones had a musical variety show on ABC for 3 years (1969 - 1971). At the end of every show Tom would come out and sing a few songs. The set seen in this clip is the set used for the end of the show. My mom was a big fan, so this show was on in our house every week. I used to get a big kick out of this part of the show because, inevitably, Tom would start to go crazy and start taking off pieces of clothing during a song. First the jacket, next the tie, then the vest, and finally several buttons of his shirt seemed to come unbuttoned. Since I was a guy, I wasn't turned on, but I always had to laugh. For years after this I used to do a Tom Jones impersonation, and this was how I did it I'd sing "It's Not Unusual" and start taking of my jacket etc. It was always good for a laugh and my wife always enjoyed it.
