I wonder why they did it like they couldn't get someone fluent in both languages. What if it wasn't going to but the writers changed it because the actor has a nice voice and handsome. Lol Maybe they wanted to push his character's image as being viewed more as a foreigner since he is Asian too? Like made him very direct, open and casual. So only english to drive it in further that he acts like that because of another culture idk. But I've heard supposedly some people like Asians that aren't native English speakers like the sound of it so maybe fan service too.

When he landed on the Kdrama scene with My Name is Kim Sam Soon in 2004 (two years before the release of this film) he created a stir that I hear was pretty rare for the time. He really did shoot up in popularity before this film released as well, so I think there was a very specific demand for him from the audience for that time. His struggles with the language are probably why he didn't have as strong a foothold in the Kdrama circuit but the international appeal (esp after being part of projects like Big Hero 6, Criminal Minds and now Wheels of Time) as well as his choice to keep maintaining a connection with Korea makes it so he still gets projects there (like Confidential Assignment 2, where he reunited with Hyun Bin, the star of the show he had debuted in).

To be more specific about why he doesn't know the language - he was brought up in Michigan, which is Midwest America, and both his parents didn't have direct ties to Korea. His mother is Korean by birth, but she was one of the many children that got adopted into families in the States post-war (around the 50s) which means she never got to learn the language herself and therefore couldn't pass it on to her son (Henney mentioned somewhere that after he started acting in SK, it was him trying to teach his mom the language). His association with that part of history as well endeared him to the Korean audience, I think. Exploring the reasons why Henney became such a phenomenon in the early 2000s is actually quite interesting! The possibilities and reasons behind why they had to work around Daniel's language struggles may be complicated but I do like how it was handled in this film and how they still managed to make the leads connect. As a South Asian who has been brought up in a different country and who struggled with my mother tongue, I related with the choice to write the hero as someone who wasn't fluent in the language but could understand it. It's a thing that happens when you've learned the language at home (and Robin clearly had a close connection with his grandfather) as a child but don't get a lot of opportunities to practice it.
