In this video we read from "Early History of Middle Tennessee," by Edward Albright, published all the way back in 1909. This is episode 2 in a series we will be doing on this book. It tells of the some the earliest pioneers of Tennessee including Casper Mansker, James Robertson, John Donelson, and Andrew Jackson's young wife, Rachel Purnell, who came to Tennessee with her family in the harsh winter of 1779.

Once reaching Muscle Shoals and Hardin County, Tennessee area, the travelers were in West Tennessee. Paducah, KY is North of the West Tennessee line, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, is at and South of the present West Tennessee line, the Tennessee River flowing through as the divide between West and Middle Tennessee.

You had the upper towns, middle towns and lower towns. This is about the lower towns....the Chicamauga cherokee...not all the cherokee.

They were definitely immigrants. That term has nothing to do with ones intentions. Stripping the term "immigrants", would imply that the land wasn't already occupied when they got there. I agree with everything else that you stated.

@@user-yz7ey6mo9z the territory of the Choctaw also had districts described as upper, middle, and lower towns. There are also other descriptives used to differentiate the different areas, but that was definitely one of them.

Calling pioneers “immigrants” is inaccurate and ignorant of the vast difference between people who forge into an unknown wilderness and people who transplant themselves from one established country to another.

Please give it a rest. It was a common label for the settlers moving west during early US expansion into the Western frontier. It fits just fine. No one ever complained until today.

Many of the pioneers were immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden. They arrived via ports along the eastern coast, pushing west as the east was already established and populated.

These Pioneers were not immigrants as you mentioned unless they had just come from another country

This story is being narrated from the book “Early History of Tennessee” by Edward Albright, 1909. It tells the story of settlers pushing west in 1779. Tennessee did not become an official US state until 1796 after being a territory since 1790. This was Cherokee land. It doesn’t matter what imaginary borders and claims there were. So yes they are immigrants, unless you disregard the US first people. If what’s being described are settlers crossing state to state, then perhaps the author is saying “emigrants”. The book is available to read via google books for free, and perhaps this can solve any questions.

They are not pioneers they are illegal immigrants. It might be unknown land to them but it is already owned by the people living on it.
