I have worked as a travel electrician for the past few years and Chattanooga to me is paradise. I’m from MN, but I love the outdoor sports of kayaking, hiking, camping, and motorcycling. Chattanooga is wonderfully situated and just such a beautiful city. I understand there are problems, and perhaps I’ll struggle initially, but it truly is my idea of paradise and I hope that even though I’ll be a transplant, I hope I can try to make it a little bit better.

Having grown up in Chattanooga for almost 20years moving to Memphis for over 20 years before moving back to Chattanooga, I can honestly say Chattanooga is WAY BETTER!!! I would agree that we have our problems, but so does every large city!! If people start moving to the tri-cities as you seem to be suggesting, then you are going to start having those “big city problems “ as well.

Pretty good presentation. We moved to Chattanooga from the North burbs of Chicago 8 years ago. We still love it here. We actually live out in Ooltewah. There are several areas just outside the city that are really nice. On the traffic comments....well everything is relative. If you know where you are going (know the roads), you can get anywhere here in under 30 mins....can't say that about Chicago (or Nashville). There certainly are alot of folks moving here from place like CA, NY, NJ, IL etc and as that continues, the traffic will likely get worse. We both work from home so are quite happy here in our area.

During my many years in LA I learned something very early on. If there’s gridlock, take an exit into town and drive backroads that nobody bothers with. It was the difference between sitting in gridlock for 3 hours barely moving each minute and getting back home in 50-60 minutes….. I guarantee the same trick will work in Chattanooga, you just gotta take the road less traveled sometimes, literally 😉😂👍🏼
@russellwickham8334
@russellwickham8334 Жыл бұрын
@@narrowistheway77 Hey, thanks for the response. I lived west of Chattanooga, little town called Jasper, which is about 35 minutes on a good day. The problem Chattanooga has is mountains and a river. You have interstate 24 that parallels hwy 41 going out west. That's it. Surface streets do not traverse the shear cliffs of Lookout Mountain There are two roads that go to the top, if they aren't traffic clogged as well, but you're looking at an extra 50 minutes to an hour going that way. If you can find a route across the river that isn't gridlock and can get out onto state hwy 27 you can cross Signal Mountain, or take a dirt road along the riverside. It's better than sitting in traffic but it's going to add an hour to your ride. If I-24 is gridlocked, Hwy 41 will be as well. Don't even bother. I've had a little better luck if I can get to hwy 11 and take 299 in Wildwood. Last time I was there, seemed everyone else had that idea too.
@narrowistheway77
@narrowistheway77 Жыл бұрын
@@russellwickham8334 yeah, if your trip in Chattanooga includes a river crossing then you’re absolutely correct that this will create a problem. There’s a few situations like that in LA I occasionally dealt with too but it was always to get to someone over in San Pedro and fortunately not to my own home. But if you’re on the correct side of the river in Chattanooga I know that trick still works. There are a few bridges in Chattanooga but they get clogged at traffic hours and that is definitely true. If you’re fortunate you can work on hours that don’t conflict with the worst hours there for traffic. The city definitely does need to work with the local nearby counties to create a bypass for the interstates that can flow around the city into northern Georgia and midway between Dunlap and Chattanooga instead because there’s just rural farms/forest out there and they can just pay to make it happen. That at least creates an option for by-passers to skip Chattanooga…. Either that or they need to add new lanes and make it work so the traffic doesn’t get gridlocked anymore, which is more likely the solution but imminent domaining land that’s already built on will be super controversial and won’t go over well with Chattanooga residents who are affected by it. There’s no simple options here, but in the next 5-10 years we will surely see something like this happen since so many people are moving to Chattanooga and it will only get worse without a solution

Chattanooga used to be an affordable and great town, then the word got out. Over the past few years, a mass of upper-income people have moved here who vote differently than the general native population. This has caused a rapid and large increase in the cost of living here, has increased general and violent crime as well as it's footprint. The native population is now having issues surviving, and some of us are being forced to move further away from the suburbs in search of more affordable living expenses. One piece of advice: If you park your car anywhere in downtown, make sure there is nothing of value in plain sight through the windows or your car will be broken into in broad daylight. House prices have doubled, and rent has more than doubled. In order to move here and be comfortable in a two bedroom one bath, the household income should be no less than $200,000. In order to just survive that number can be as low as $80,000, however you will have no discretionary spending. You will only pay your bills and eat. I do not have a positive outlook on the future direction of this town. This outlook pains me as I am a lifelong resident and love this town.

200k...That's laughable. I am lucky in that I bought my house north of town a few years back and it has tripled in value. If you don't like traffic then live north of town where Highway 27 is your main route. It takes me 20 minutes to drive 18 miles to my job on the Southside even during rush hours. I'm lucky to clear 60k, but I did hit the jackpot with refinanciing of my house and paying off all my debt. Retirement looks bleak though as I'm rapidly approaching that age. The rise in housing costs has us who are lucky enough to have bought before 2019 stuck in our current homes with nowhere else to go even if we wanted too. Plus it's just knowing that people who sold their homes in expensive big cities kinda got price gouged because of their ignorance of the market here. Had the first one just said no, then maybe we would have a more affordable market. Of course they are much smarter than us...I kinda look over my brow at them...lol... Yeah, but not smart enough to know that a 2 bedroom house in South Red Bank isn't worth 250k!

I broke down in Dandridge one day traveling back to Nevada where I live from New England where I grew up and remember how friendly and helpful the people were helping me get back on the road. The mechanics were the best charging me a very reasonable price for the repairs not taking advantage of my situation when I was at their mercy. During a separate trip, the people of Bristol were very kind to me and my parents as we were traveling through and stayed the night during an ice storm. I'm stuck in the rat race for now In Vegas but,when the time comes for me to move on in a few years I will give you a call as I would give northeast Tennessee serious consideration.

The buildings downtown are also literally crumbling from lack of care. Often filled with homeless people who regularly attack people running around downtown. Drugs and crime are high and I would never be down there at night alone. It's a pretty city to visit but once you live here all of the tourism stuff is boring because you've done it 60,000 times. That leaves you with the basics which are fine. If you love hiking and boating this is definitely your place . Don't expect to make good money unless you find a little niche corner where they pay well. Also the health care is terrible so if you have a truly devastating health issue happen, do not expect good care here.

I'll add if Crime is beginning to be an issue its only going to get worse. Allot worse. I was looking at houses in Chattanooga and appreciate the honest feedback here. Currently live in ABQ and crime is really becoming an issue with no relief in site with how the far left gov and Mayor are literally catering to the degenerates and drug addicts. They have zero care for businesses here. Half the state is on disability and medicaid and the gov is raising the caps for those to sue doctors which are all leaving in droves. She wants to create free health care but forgets that there ain't going to be any doctors left. Without docs it don't matter if its free. Overall this country is in decline. I feel its only a matter of time that we all will be carrying. Meth is the new drug on the streets that make zombies out of humans. Once they are addicts they are very brazen about stealing to support their habit. And they can't stop. The relapse rate is very high. They can't function normally anymore.

I've been looking possible areas to call home since I'm now 100% remote, I've always had the option (past 20 years) to work remote 1-2 days per week but COVID made fully remote work more mainstream. My main concern about NE Tennessee is the more limited job market in IT if I had to return to the office - even if hybrid. I think I would have to take a drastic cut in pay to remain there. However, I think remote work is here to stay and while it might reduce in availability (and salary), there should be companies willing to hire someone fully remote for the foreseeable future in my field. I'm actually considering Colorado Springs right now, but the housing market is significantly more expensive than my current area (Orlando, Florida) so my monthly payment would be a lot more. It is also far away from any other family - which is a modest concern. I'm trying to get into an area with a more active lifestyle most of the year (Orlando is great for about 3-4 months, then it is hot as blazes). I also like to ski and would prefer to be in reasonable driving distance to good ski slopes - not skiing on ice like at NC resorts - which are only good for about 6 weeks anyway. Access to a major airport would also be nice to access the rest of the country - if I can't live near good skiing, then direct flights to Denver or Utah would be ok, but I would want to trade that with a lower cost of living to afford multiple trips out west. If I stayed in the east, Chattanooga looked like a nice possibility since Atlanta isn't that far away and I would still enjoy the lower tax burden of Tennessee.

The biggest problem with Northeast Tennessee is Ballad and the healthcare monopoly they established not long ago. With any luck, an expanding population will provide enough of a market to have better healthcare choices and competition like Knoxville and Chattanooga have in East Tennessee. The Tri-Cities area has a lot of outdoor recreation potential, but it's not nearly as developed as the Knoxville and Chattanooga areas. Kingsport seems to violate the laws of physics as virtually everything is 8 minutes away. Try that in Chattanooga or Knoxville. Politically, JC is just a small Chattanooga.

You might also want to look at NW TN. It doesn't have as much scenic beauty as the NE but it's even more affordable. There are small towns there losing population now and plenty of houses on the market. The gigantic Ford plant being built around Memphis is going to make that area of the state start to bustle again economically, so it is s a good time to buy. If you are a couple that like to travel and want an affordable base to live that might be a better option

If you live in Chattanooga and have kids, do not send your kids to public schools. They are awful, Your best bet is to live in NW Georgia and send them to Lakeview, Ringgold, or Heritage. As far as areas to live: Ooltewah is nice but getting crowded, Lookout Mtn, Signal Mtn, and Missionary Ridge are nice, as are parts of East Brainerd. Stay away from Brainerd and East Ridge.

Chattanooga is a place to visit not to call your home. Jobs pay too low and most jobs out here will want you to do xyz for little pay. Housing cost is ridiculous for an average 2 bedroom apartment or house will run you $1,500 + with little square feet. If you come here expect to work 2 full time jobs just to live comfortably. The only thing that’s great here is the weather, the scenery and majority of the people that’s it.

Very informative but this post is another example of gingerly stepping around the real issues in almost all, no, all major cities in America: African gang violence. Black men ages 17 to 55, account for roughly 4% of the country's population, but FBI stats show they commit 60% of the murders and felonies. That would make them 15 times (1500%) more violent than the national average. Black Lives Matters cares about them but doesn't seem to care about the law abiding blacks in these areas who are the most impacted by this violence and don't even get police protection. This Country is doomed unless we change.
