But "polka" dance comes actually from Czech. It originated there in the XIXth century and has spread to the other countries. It is said that (one can read about it e.g. in English version of Wikipedia) the name of this dance was first "půlka" (meaning "half" in Czech language). And many actually do think that polka is a Polish dance - which I say it is not, I've clearly said above it's Czech (although of course it was danced also in Poland, and by Poles abroad, together with Polish traditional dances). And Poland herself has five main traditional folk dances: polonaise/polonez, mazurka/mazurek, cracovienne/krakowiak (which by the way has the same musical metre 2/4 as polka, but is older, so some say it could also influence the origins of polka), kujawiak, and fifth - oberek. Even Fryderyk Chopin was composing, remembering these Polish traditional dances from his childhood and youth, polonaises, mazurkas and krakowiaks (e.g. rondo à la krakowiak).

Although many European traditional dances were in fact danced across many other countries.
