The song was written in 1968 the year before she married George Jones. When you learn of the things she went through while married to her first husband and Mr. Jones, you start to understand what she was writing about.

She had some tumultuous marriages for sure, but that doesn't make the sentiment of the song any less degrading to someone in a toxic relationship. Now, if its sung from the point of view of a family relation or friends giving bad advice to someone that is in a toxic relationship and the protagonist feels trapped in the marriage, then clearly that takes a different spin on the song. But we know that Wynette wasn't passive and quite a strong person in her relationships, willing to leave a man if it wasn't working. That's why the lyrics are so problematic nowadays, back when it was released it was the thinking was that women should endure and basically be chained to the kitchen sink.

I know that is what is taught to young people these days, and it is very problematic and why so many of them end up miserable, scared and alone. The vast majority of men are very protective, honest one women men. The big problem is a shortage of strong, honest, hardworking women. It takes far more courage and intelligence to trust and form a partnership than it is to be alone and independent. If you want to share good times then you need to share the struggles too. You cant run away like a coward, when times get tough. That is what this song is about. I know a lot of people with long happy marriages, and they nearly all have a story about a time when they were down, and didn't know where their next meal was coming from. It is sad that so many women born into this age will never know what it is like to be in a loving relationship, because they are just too scared.

I was about 7 when that first one came out... and my folks were divorcing. I think Mom bought me the 45 to play on the player I used for the book 45 sets. At the time, I didn't realize how messed up that is. I had to have been ɓelting it out indiscriminately around Dad. As kids do.

I'm not a country fan but her voice was all it took for me. She had many many many hits. She was young when she died she was in her 70s when she died. "He'll Never Take the Place of You" from the same album, and "Come on Home" (from the DIVORCE album) both also feature that spine-tingling (wallpaper-peeling) power. She could go from tense, pensive, and forlorn to a tremendous crescendo and never move a muscle. She did, at first, say she hated the high notes in "Stand By Your Man" and thought she "sounded like a cat being swung by its tail." Of course, being a co-writer on it, the royalties helped her learn to love that song.

Also, Stand By Your Man was also extremely controversial when it was released, and still is today. My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2017. We had her choose some things she would like to do with our family. One was a train ride. My mom loved gospel music. So while we were on the train we all started singing for her. I have five sisters, and a brother. Most are married with kids and grandkids. We took up most of the car we were on. My aunt came along. While we were all singing my looks at me and says you have a really beautiful voice. You sound a lot like Tammy Lynette. Should could not have given me a better compliment. We also apologized to the other riders and explained why we were there. An older gentleman spoke up and said he was a pastor and asked my mom if he could pray for her with his congregation and tell them what he saw.

Tammy Wynette is absolutely one of my favorite country singers. I love her voice, I love everything about her including her childhood and then being a hairdresser along the way, all the suffering she went through along the way as well, and always remained such a decent and humble and cool person. And damn she could wail, but then do that husky alto thing too for contrast and she always sounded so intimate. Just hit one of her greatest hits playlist and you really cannot go wrong. Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad. Funny and an absolute banger. Too Far Gone. A really slow waltz and it is so packed with emotion and really complicated emotive phrasing off the beat, it's just so masterful, and then in the chorus she ends up belting. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I was stationed on the Korean DMZ in 1970, I was living in an open bay barracks with 43 other guys. The rockers were on one end and country guys on the other end. Several guys had fabulous srereo setups they hac bought in Viet Nam. This song playing at max volume would always prompt someone on our end to play The Beatles or the stones at the other end with everyone standing in the middle arguing which was better. Nothing violent just trash talk we were all lonely and wanted some reminder of home. It's a shame people can't live this way today.

Halo from Switzerland, the song by Tammy Wynette is almost as old as me and in my opinion her voice simply belongs to the song. Everything fits, the instruments, the vocals. Tammy Was married to George Jones from 1969 - 75. Her 1969 GREATEST HITS album was the first album by a female country artist to sell over one million copies. "D-I-V-O-R-C-E", "Apartment Number Nine", "You're Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad", "Singing My Song" and "You and Me" were some of her other big hits. She passed away in 1998, after a number of years of failing health.
