@@tiacalhoun3841 I love how, when you're talking about to songs that are inarguably the best Country music has to offer hands down, someone will step in with a third option as if that third option is worth anything. Kieth who? Don't close your what? Compared to Wynette and Jones... I don't even know who this Whitley guy is supposed to be. Its a bit like saying, "Elvis is the best, but then there's also Chad Kroger of Nickelback."

You should react to her and George Jones singing "Golden Ring", there's a live performance of them singing it after they were divorced. That's the wonderful thing about good country, it's relatable on some level, whether personal, or someone you know, or just glad you're not there when you could be.

Tammy Wynette and George Jones were married for a short period of time. On February 16, 1969, Wynette and Jones wed. The next year, Wynette gave birth to a daughter, whom they named Tamala Georgette. Marriage was more than personal for Wynette and Jones. Each had been extremely successful as solo acts, but now their careers were intertwined. They divorced on March 21, 1975.

@@ShawnandMel4Life Country Singer Tammy Wynette Dies in Nashville Home at Age 55 Dow Jones Newswires April 7, 1998 9:19 am ET SHARE TEXT NASHVILLE -- Tammy Wynette, who rose from beautician to "the first lady of country music" with hits including "Stand by Your Man," died Monday. She was 55 years old. Ms. Wynette, who had had a series of health problems in recent years, died Monday evening while napping at her home, said spokeswoman Evelyn Shriver. The cause of her death was believed to have been a blood clot. Tammy Wynette is presented with the living legend award by Merle Haggard in June 1991. Her 1968 top-seller, "Stand by Your Man," which she co-wrote with her producer Billy Sherrill, became her signature song, with its advice to forgive one's mate because "after all, he's just a man." But her throbbing voice in other tunes, such as "Till I Can Make It on My Own," expressed flashes of independence. Ms. Wynette was one of country music's greatest success stories, catapulting from a job in a beauty shop to a three-time winner of the Country Music Association's female vocalist of the year award -- 1968 to 1970. Only Reba McEntire won the honor more times -- four. WSJ NEWSLETTER Notes on the News The news of the week in context, with Tyler Blint-Welsh. Notes on the News I would also like to receive updates and special offers from Dow Jones and affiliates. I can unsubscribe at any time.I agree to the Privacy Policy and Cookie Notice. SIGN UP Ms. Wynette recorded more than 50 albums and sold more than 30 million records. Country music fans polled for the annual Music City News awards voted her a legend in 1991, but she said it was premature. "I don't consider myself a legend. I think it's kind of overused," she said. Throughout her 25-year career, her stormy marriages and hospital stays, even a kidnapping and beating for which no one was ever convicted, threatened to overshadow one of the most successful singing careers in country music history. But she didn't emphasize the negative. Besides "Stand by Your Man," Ms. Wynette's hits included "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," "I Don't Wanna Play House," "Womanhood," "Take Me to Your World," "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad," "Singing My Song" and "The Ways to Love a Man." Ms. Wynette was born Virginia Wynette Pugh on a cotton farm in Itawanba County, Miss. She picked cotton as a child, and as a young woman worked as a waitress, a doctor's receptionist, a barmaid and a shoe factory worker. In the mid-1960s, she was working as a beautician in Birmingham, Ala., and making periodic 180-mile trips to Nashville in hopes of getting discovered as a singer. She visited music business offices in Nashville and caught the eye of Grand Ole Opry star Porter Wagoner who asked her to sing at his road shows. Shortly thereafter, she met record producer Billy Sherrill who recorded her for Epic Records and launched her career

In the early 80's Tammy was the featured artist at one of our local fall festivals. My friend and I went to the festival to see what they had, but we figured that Tammy Wynette being such a huge megastar that she was, was probably staying on her tour bus and seeing her before her show was highly unlikely. However once we reached the middle of town where thousands of people were all mingling around what we saw was just amazing, there on the street corner by the bank stood Tammy Wynette talking to a couple, she was mixing and interacting with the people (Her fans), she was very down to earth and personable and to be such a huge star, to me was just mind blowing. As I walked by her (Literally about one foot away from her) she looked at me, smiled and said hi, I was like WOW!!, that was over forty years ago and when I think about it still to this day I think WOW, that someone like her acknowledged me by smiling at me and saying hi. The one thing that really struck me was how INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL she was in person, one of the most gorgeous women I have ever seen, I think one thing we forget is that even though these people are megastars they are people first and have the same feelings and needs the rest of us have.

I saw Tammy at a small dance hall in Seguin Texas in 1977. It surprises me now that at the time she got this small venue, being a well known entertainer. Little did we know that she was having health issues, she performed flawlessly, she has a gentile voice. I as well as a few others allowed us to kiss her cheek, I'll remember that with fondness. Well after the show she was rushed to the hospitol, for a bleeding ulcer. Health issues stayed with her until she passed away.

Tammy Wynette was really big in the late 60s and early 70s. She was married to George Jones back then and they sang a lot of duets together. You should listen to We're not the Jet Set.

I am almost 69 years old we were raised on this type of music, and yes, this song was one our mother loved to listen to and sing along with. Brings back a lot of memories. Good on you for playing this, thank you!

The night she won the award for this song, het husband refused to go and left her with an empty seat and he drank all night, when she arrived home, he beat her. I always cry to this song. No matter what, abuse must never be tolerated.

Tammy Wynette was married to George Jones. A TV movie was even made about them. Unfortunately she passed away.
