I studied music in college and I have strong feelings about certain things. One of them is lyrics. If you listen to most songs, they use regular phrases to say “I love you, but you make me blue. Do you feel it too.” SO GENERIC AND SHOWS NO IMAGINATION!! She is completely different. These lyrics use words that don’t have to rhyme to get the point across. She doesn’t have to stoop to cliche’s. She and her lyrics are REAL and speaks like a real person speaks, not some cheap rhymes that you can write in three minutes. She has a thought process that she uses to great affect in all of her songs. She proves over and over that she has musical talent, she’s clear about her intent and SHE HAS A BRAIN and knows how to use it. Add that all together and the result is that she is just completely a cool human!!!

Much love from Ontario, Canada :) ETA If you want to see a much younger Alanis check out Too Hot, On My Own, or Walk Away. Much more "bubble gun popish" but I still loved it. Those were from her very first album. She still came on the scene with a lot of style.

Alanis had a “hidden” song, completely a capella, on the Jagged Little Pill CD. After the last song, there’s a long pause, then her unaccompanied voice in a song called “Your House”. You won’t find the song or any credits to it on the CD liner notes; but it is pure Alanis: a bit vulnerable, a bit vengeful, completely raw. Worth a listen (the song is on KZbin).

No they're not. Look at really old Alanis, she used to do this really bad bubble-gum Cheerleader music. It was Britney Spears bad. Look at her 80's stuff, somewhere in the 90's she changed her style and became really good but pre-90's Alanis is cringe-worthy. Maybe try "Too Hot" or "Plastic" as examples of her bubble-gum phase. Or if you want Rock Bottom, do a youtube search for "Alanis Morissette - 80's Songs Compilation". But fair warning, don't do it if you want to continue to live in your delusional "She's never written a bad song" fantasy. She's now one of my favorite artists, but the 80's version of her was terrible.

She was the spokesperson for my generation (GenX). If you ever want to know what we (at least, the latter half of GenX -- she was born the same year as me, 1974) were about in our 20s, this song sums the generation up perfectly. And her voice -- emotion, angst, but also thoughtfulness -- is the voice of most of us coming to adulthood in the 90s, pre-9/11, and post-breakdown-of-communism. One of my favorite of her songs. This and "You Learn" are at the top of my list. That one's worth a listen, too, if you get the chance.

That's interesting. My colleagues from work and me took part in this survey called "People into Music" in around 2008 (in Spain) and there was this clear gap between people being born in the late 70s and the early 80s. When asked for the album that influenced us the most until today, most of the late 70s said Ten by Pearl Jam (I was crushed because I thought I was unique!) and the early 80s kids said Jagged Little Pill by Alanis. That I also came to appreciate but it didn't reach me in a crucial time in my life when I was dealing with the typical Gen X teenage angst. That was Nirvana and PJ. Alanis was the soundtrack of early adulthood and a more positive outlook on life.

*She has such a perfect voice that some songs you hear were recorded in ONE take. You might what to listen to Alanis Morissette's "Ironiç" and "Thank U." Her voice also sounds different because she is from Canada 🇨🇦 so the way she enunciates her words are special.*
@johnplaysgames31202 жыл бұрын
That could def be part of it but the main feature of Alanis's voice that gives it that unique sound is that she flips up to falsetto at the end of a lot of her words, giving her singing a bit of a yodel throughout. She is a master of riding that break in her voice in a way that a lot of other singers aren't. The only other one I can think of who uses the flip as much (and maybe a little more, tbh) is Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries. Most singers use that quick flip into falsetto once in a while to add a bit of a cry to specific word or phrase in an emotional song but both Alanis and Dolores have made that yodel a signature part of their base singing style.
@cubnation2 жыл бұрын
@@johnplaysgames3120 I agree, and it's ironic that you mentioned Dolores O'Riordan. I have the Cranberries in my playlist after Alanis. I am glad that Alanis sought help and is still with us, and happily married with kids. I also think Alanis is so very clever and intelligent with her lyrics. I love _Ironic._ Did you see the video of her goofing around with James Corden and singing _Ironic_ with him? So funny! I also like Alanis just a little bit more because I have never heard her sing off-key in a live performance. I can't say that about Dolores O'Riordan. (Dreams 1999 Paris) :(

She was great playing God in the movie Dogma. It was a shame her part didn't come till the end of the movie and was so short. One of my favorite songs from her is "Uninvited" from the soundtrack for City of Angels. I love the way it slowly builds with the swelling music floating around her voice... Till the full band/orchestra kicks in with the strings. If you do the live version you might not get the strings that the studio version has. The studio version uses an upright bass. This song has always reminded me of "Kashmir" by Led Zepplin in how it builds and its dynamic orchestra sound.

This particular song takes me back to a skating rink that I went to every Friday night in my small town because it was the absolute only thing to do.

What a wonderful album and her voice is so unique. Anything from Jagged Little Pill is awesome to check out. Another singer and song from same time frame Sarah McLachlan "Angel" Toni Braxton "Unbreak My Heart". Y'all love both 🕊️💗

My favorite Alanis song would be "IRONIC"! Kind of a medium tone through the verses and the refrain is like a PUNCH IN THE FACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO MUCH MUSIC SO LITTLE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ironically, nothing mentioned in the song fits the definition of "ironic" 🤓

Love Alanis' voice! You guys should give a listen to Natalie Merchant, maybe "Kind and Generous", & "Wonder". Then try some Norah Jones, "I Don't Know Why", & "Come Away With Me".

Have you guys reacted to Sheryl Crow yet? She'd be a great choice for Female Friday. So many good selections from her catalog.

Yes! I've been so excited for you two to do more Alanis! This song is one of my favorites too! Also check out Ablaze, she wrote it about her kids, it's so sweet it might bring a tear to your eye. She does this live version where she's holding her daughter that is so good! Her voice is just as good live as it is on the recordings! Jimmy Fallon Live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJbRe2eVidGNmbc

I loved the expression on BJ's face when Alanis began playing the harmonica 😉 I grew up with a father who played the harmonica. He played a lot of Mexican folklore harmonies and was tough with blues. It took me back to a time when I was running around the front yard playing chase with my 2 year old niece/ goddaughter and my pops (RIP 🙏) came out and sat on the front porch watching us playing his folklore harmonies and then, out of the blue, he played the harmonica solo from Roger Troutman's Do Wah Diddy! I stopped in my tracks, turned to look at him and with his beautiful brown eyes, he smiled and gave me a wink 😉 precious memories and just sharing this memory with you made bittersweet tears to My Beautiful brown eyes 😇 love you two love birds and thank you for being you. Sincerely, your Mexican Soul Brother Vic ✌️😎🎶🤘🙏💯 and for Amber 🌹❣️🙏 BELIEVE

You keep showing Canadian talent but you seem to ignore k d Lang. She is a female crooner - try the cover of Roy Orbison’s Crying or Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. You just really have to do this. You will not regret it!

I was in my early 20's when this song came out. Her band and ALL of the awesome music from the 90's helped me through times of just trying to figure "it" the fuck out! This song brings back some fond memories of "figuring it out " coming into adulthood in South Florida. From Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Peace guys!✌️🤘

It's a scary time. But, I take a break from reality and enjoy your hopefulness. I know you don't do controversial issues, but acknowledging things aren't right is spot on. Thank y'all. AR girl here.
