It's possible to be good at a build order and quick walling but have no understanding of the game!

@@SirQuantizationTrue. It’s generally better to be slower to age but better at strategy. It doesn’t matter if you have the 100% perfect fast castle build order if you don’t know what you’re going to do with said fast castle.

After seeing Mr Planner / Mr Slow games, I came back to AoE2 from a 3 month detox... and I kind of feel there's less of that now. It used to be 1k would get perfect BOs and QuickWalls, which is insane for the level... and I ended up being slaughtered... but the last few games have been enjoyable, back and forth, LEL mistakes from both sides...

Thousands of games played that's how, same thing as when you watch ballet dancers and all their moves look effortlessly fluid even though they are hard as hell: they trained them for countless hours ! Hera is a dancer of AoE2, everything is fluid and looks easy but when you try you realise how hard it really is 😅

I really like how Hera explains what his focus is on when he's tabbing all over the map. Keeping maa attacking, checking defense, growing eco was a great example

The box formation and stand-ground tip for maa was a really valuable tip! I struggle a lot to pull of any drush or maa rush builds because it is so stressfull to properly control the militias while caring for eco. Thank you for these videos Hera!

Love this series! This video doesn’t reflect what I encounter at 1050 ELO in Western Europe. I often see opponents go for a 20 pop feudal, they lame, they scout with sheeps, push deer, even go maa sometimes.

around 1k elo is inconsistent beacuse its around starting elo, there is really underperforming and overperforming players, annd some of them are that elo because of one tricking

100% At 900 elo, I get all kinds of counters to counters, scout rushes, etc... But, you also get very new players who you just wipe the floor with.

Thanks, as always! It would be good (as I said in a comment on your 1st video of the series) to check if your opponent was a solid 1000-1100 player, and not someone who is playing his first games. It felt again like he was not a consistent player on that ELO, but a newer one. And it is likely to happen since your account is brand new for the series. For example, no one on this level would let the MAA + scout be standing in their wood and not do something for so long (retreating or fighting, but something... He did nothing). It is obvious that it will stop happening as you climb the ladder, but lots of us are in this specific ELO range, and it would be awesome to watch you playing like this but with a consistent real 1000-1100 player, to actually learn with the real example. I noticed something similar in the 900-1000 video.

I just commented about this. Its true this dude has 1000 elo but only because it was literally one of his first matches ranked in his lifetime. Hera is not doing anything wrong he is just queeing up but because his acc is absolute fresh the elo doesnt know if hes actually a 1000k elo player so he also gets absolute fresh players and not every fresh acc is a smurf like.. well.. him 😅 so when you play at 1k elo and me where we both already have idk a couple 100 games its a "real" 1k elo match. At my level people know how to fish boom sometimes, how to lure boar, how to lure deer, how to wall, how to build towers to defend, they know they have to follow a build order, they know they need army early etc etc etc. Its not like 1k elo players are garbage and dont know anything about the game.. its just the game starts you there so sometimes people still need to find their elo

I think is worth mentioning that you should always keep your scout and your boar villager on Ctrl group, cause you want to have instant access to them in order to save them from any harm on dark age.

I love this series (also loved the previous one). Last video I looked back through your Twitch vods to see the rest of the games as well. I couldn't find it this time though. I'm pretty much certain everyone at the ELO you're targetting would like more than one video covering the range. I feel the main take aways here are to learn a M@A build order and a general game plan for Goths that can work in the range. Which is nice, but a wider insight might be nice. I understand you might not want to clutter the main channel (though for sure I'll watch it wherever). But maybe be content for Hera - Gameplay? Thanks for all that you do for the community! 🙂

Great guide man, but I'm stuck at around 850 ELO haha. I just seem to get out macroed all the time or rushed when I'm trying to macro. It's hard getting it all together. I first played this game way back in the very early 2000s messing about with my little brother on LAN games and it's so different. I used to play SC2 pretty competitively back in the day reaching master league and I feel somewhat out of my depth in AoE2. So many different civs and bonuses to think about and even the resource management is much more complex. I'm sure I'll get there with the guidance you give in your videos, it's just gunna take some time.

Just curious, stand-ground stance for the man at arms rush makes sense, but what about defensive stance when you're checking on other stuff? Wouldn't you get the benefit of not chasing vils under a TC, and not standing idle if attacked?

Hey Hera, I just come back to this video as I just won with your fantastic maa build against mongol scout rush in 1000 elo range. I won this game with awareness of what the opponent was doing, which is usually my weakness. Despite the win, I still feel like I have so much to still improve on. My strengths: build-orders are known and consequent (none of that low-elo-legend stuff!), economy is kept neatly, but I often lack sense of what teammates or opponents are doing. I use hotkeys for almost everything, except grouping military units. Do you think the latter is super important to improve?

I wish my 900-1100 elo games were this chill 😂 your enemy had like idk maybe 2 games overall lol. When I try man at arms around 1000 elo and 250h ingame time they already have army themselves, they know how to build a tower, they know how to wall their units. I dont want to bash your enemy, like I said on other videos I am playing since Dec and hovering around 1000-1100 elo 50% winrate thanks to all the videos from you Viper Survivalist and Spirit of the Law if not even more aoe youtubers.

Looking for help. I go up with 19 pop M@A rush likewise but i always struggle getting my eco up and running. My opponent just walls makes an archer and gets faster castle. Contols map > siege forward maybe even castle drop..imps faster too. Any advice on when i reach feudal to retain map and strong eco welcome. Thanks.

This disconnect was likely to a bug which emerged again after seemingly having been fixed. That dreaded "A running process may be interfering..." bug where that "other program" is actually your video card driver! There are plenty of forum discussions, no permanent solution. And it's soooo unpredictable. It happened to me at 40 minutes in a game. Fresh install, antivirus and firewall and other programs turned off. Maybe if some of the most famous players could pressure the devs to focus more on this.... otherwise players would leave in droves.

when hera is smurfing in a video it's good, but when i play on a account where i only play Sicilians and try to learn donjon rush strats i got 2v2 instead of 1v1 and teammate called me a smurf bcs i played 10 games and griefied me with walling my town center so i resigned (reminder i didn't play aoe2 for couple weeks + i was on 1300 elo my main account is 1400-1500 i cant just start from 1500 elo ofc i need to win games to get my elo and it doesn't even take that long to gain elo on new account)

I gotta say I love this series and the previous ones. However, dont you think its better to do the lower level tutorials against an AI and without randoming a civ? In this one, for example, you went m@a even though almost no 1000 elo player can successfully do a m@a build and actually use the m@a correctly. opponents then DCed which had cut things short. I loved this video but it feels more messy and harder to learn from compared to your previous series.

I often think the same when watching other players around my elo, because the players sometimes do stuff worse at which I am good for my elo, but I think one often overlooks one's own weeknesses. That being said I think you are right , because I think Hera might not have finished all his placement games for the road to 2k account the opponent's elo is a bit lower than Hera's (the opponent seems to have peaked around 1k and used to be around 950 elo)
