Thank you for posting. I thought I’d seen most of the footage from this period. What a fabulous young bloke he was, unaffected by success or fame. I had the pleasure of doing a 7 mile run with him one day during my own career in the early eighties. He was about forty and still fairly fit. Given all the drugs of the past thirty years he’s unquestionably the greatest of all time for me.

Herb was just 20 in this interview. He seems remarkably measured and mature.

中学生の時エリオットは憧れの人で彼のコーチの書いた本をすり減るほど読み練習に励んだものです。あれから58年。スネルも旅立ち記録も随分向上しましたがあの時代であの記録は相対的にみてやはり最高だと思います。

He really put the interviewer in his place when he asked about technique!

He really put the interviewer back to realty hen he tried to create controversy over professionalism. Journalists always have this desire to promote themselves by sniping like dogs.

Herb Elliot, i reckon the mile word record will get down to 3.32 one day. Someone will do 4 laps in 53 someday. maybe even under 3.30. It is not so unrealistic. At one time 3.59 was considered impossible and now it is 3.43. But i am talking about 100 years from now

No mention of Percy Cerutty. Tactics at the time?

Herb very seldom ran to "tactics". As he says in his book, The Golden Mile, you may have a general idea as to how you'd like to run the race, but as soon as the race starts, that can all go out the door! As for Percy Cerutty, Herb had nothing but the utmost respect for the man. Given the length of this interview, it appears that Herb had nowhere near the amount of time it would have required to speak of Percy Wells Cerutty and the training regimes at Portsea, Victoria. The Golden Mile with Alan Trengove is well worth a read.
