great stuff! my native american great-grandmother never was exposed to modern medicine...she lived a long time for the very late 19th century....my appalachian grandmother, her daughter, lived to be 99 and 3/4 yrs! Never took any modern medications till she was nearly 80! She ate certain things when she had certain ailments....she grew her own medicinal herbs and fruits and veggies, and pretty much, lived in the century in which she was born....she was born in 1884-ish. She never drove a car, had running water, or power in her home until near her late 70's. She composted everything and saved all her seeds....frankly, when I was a teen, I thought she was a nut because she preferred the old ways, and reading by an oil lamp instead of watching tv....she only used a phone when she had no choice....even in her later years, she walked to her neighbors when she needed to speak to them. my point? I had one....I did....let me look.....oh right! As long as you are doing your due diligence, checking in with your family health care provider, etc., you really can takecare of yourself!

I made the base recipe today (mullein, licorice, cherry bark). I came down with a nasty virus yesterday, but my real challenge is that I almost always develop bronchitis and asthma even after one day with a cold. Placebo or no, I am surprised at how well this has relaxed my chest and improved my breathing in short order.

Thyme tea is a wonderful for coughs and colds. We have used it for years. Loosens the phlegm and soothes the throat. I would consider removing the licorice root and adding thyme as thyme lowers blood pressure rather than raising it.

Great video ! But I have one suggestion. In Hungary 89 years man lives. His name is György. He has really famous herbal teas, he uses what the nature gives us. For example walnut trea leaves, rose-hips, rasberry leaves etc. Herbs against diabetes, flu, cold, high blood pressure etc. And his suggestion when you make tea ( or other things) from herbs don't use metal spoon or filter cause the metal can neutralizes some active ingredient of the herbs.

Licorice root can elevate blood pressure so anyone with hypertension should be leery of any amount. Definitely do your own research on each herb you use in any way. Unfortunately MD's know very little about herbs so it's best to check with an actual herbalist or naturopath if you can. They are few and far between in my area. Bummer. 😊

We use loquat syrup for coughs as it is protects the lungs. We also use orange peels, magnolia leaves and the Jesus plant( that's not the scientific name just what my TCM herbal professor calls it) It's treats the spleen which regulates the phlegm. I have a few others that I have tucked away in my notes somewhere. These seem to always work.

My son was sick with something called PANDAS. He is 13. This it a ammune reaction to strep throat, that causes a sudden onset of Terrets and OCD among other things. The short of it was that his ammune system was attacking his brain causing swelling. This is often miss diagnosed as a form of autism, but thank goodness my doctor was well informed. He still had strep in his intestinal track that needed to eliminated, and we had to get rid of the inflammation. This is relatively a unstudied and not well known thing. So treatment is still in the experimental stage. I did not want to ruin my son's intestinal bacteria with antibiotics and unknown chemicals that may or may not help. So I did some research and found that some essential oils were found to solve this reaction.(EO are not usually consumed and not FDA regulated) there are only a few oils that can be ingested (only pure EO can be eaten, thy are extremely strong form of plant essence) I used oregano 3 drops 3 times a day in capsules (oregano oil can burning your it's a hot oil and must be deluted in oil). This is good for killing bad bacteria, and strep bacteria. Then I used manuka honey 1 TBS twice daily for enflimation, and 1 drop of frankincense mixed in for immune stabilizer. It worked he no longer is yelling random words or making sounds all day, and the OCD is going away slowly. I read from a pandas face book that i will have to keep treating him for imflimation for a while to help his body fix itself, and that Everytime he's exposed to strep throat the symptoms will return ant to treat with oregano oil again.(oregano oil should only be used for no more than 3 weeks , 6 weeks for extreme). I'm so happy I just wanted to spread the news! Also check out the book the cure is in the cupboard it's about oregano oil. ( Essential oil companies per the FDA can not make claims that their oils can cure sickness, and Manny people like myself can not recommend a brand or risk their post being taken down, the FDA will not allow claims, Manny EO companies have to state not for consumption do to the Regulations) Essential oils need to be 100% pure, to be ingested only in very small amounts(drops). EO can be dangerouse do your research buy a book. I am not a doctor or professional and am not recommending for you to do what I did. Just putting the info out their for others to be able to make informed decision

There is a trend for using essential oils to treat just about anything and everything under the sun. While I am a huge proponent for herbals, I would still be wary using them as a cure-all. In addition, improper dosages and applications can cause adverse reactions. Be careful.

We usually use Essential Oils, but we have a couple of other things we use, if we run out of Oils. We use dark chocolate, 80% or higher gets the best results. It only takes a few bites. We have also used pineapple juice. Both are very effective.

You kind of touched on this but everyone should check their cold medications! Most are a combo of medications that work against each other. For example it will have an expectorant and a cough suppressing medication. Kind of pointless as those two have the opposite effect and won't do anything for you because they'll be working against each other. I plan on giving this recipe a try this fall (if I need it. Hopefully I don't) =)

I would suggest not reducing, because most of the medicinal properties of herbs are in the volatile oils which will escape in the steam. You might find they work better if you simmer for 15 to 20 minutes with the lid tightly closed. then alow to cool for 10 minutes before removing the lid...then add your honey. Another way with root and rhizome is to add the herbs into just melted honey in a medium container...cover and put in a dark cool place for 3 weeks. Then melt gently once more to strain out the herbs. You can store herbal honey for 6 months and then add a spoon to a cup of tea, or eat it off the spoon.

I’m not an herbalist, but the book we followed specifically said to reduce by half. That is why we did that.

I know... Alot of books do say to reduce, but now you have two ways :) You can try both and decide which you prefer... Some herbs will still work well even after reducing. I know Swedish bitters are amazing.

I know that honey is antibacterial, generally it's supposed to not be a preservative as to what I've been told. How long does the concoction last? I make some homemade things for skincare that have herbal teas and water mixed together. Because of the water content is has the potential to grow mold. Have you had any problems with that happening? I really want to make this!

Is there a natural sweetener that could be used for diabetics to not raise blood sugar levels like honey or brown sugar might? Maybe Blue Agave? Or would that not work? Last winter I had a 6 week cough and I am sure not wanting that again. But wouldn't want to be taking honey as often as I needed that medicine.
@Guildbrookfarm
@Guildbrookfarm 6 жыл бұрын
The sweetener is for preservation and taste only. You could take it straight or add agave. I think vegetable glycerin has a low glycemic index but you will want to check on that. Also, and I can't stress this enough to everyone, you will want to check herbal interactions and side effects. I recommend the books, but at the very least, there is an online reference I included in the description to look up information.
