Thank you! Some herbs are very low toxicity and can be taken multiple times a day without any real worry. Others, the reason why they work as well as they do, is because they have a certain level of toxicity and can do real damage if taken indefinitely. It's in the apothecary to know and tell those taking it. It's the least we can do to make sure everyone can get the best results for their particular ailments.

I love me some good herbal....medicine! I have neighbors with black walnuts...we do have them in Oregon (actually all of the Pac NW) we also have the english walnut too...I like that they produce nuts at different times...spring and end of summer/fall. I would also say that ESPECIALLY in a SHTF situation this would be important to have on the shelf such as if sanitation becomes an issue and parasites are introduced or the like. Good to know NOW what will work if we need it later.

Oh good I was gonna ask if people had been planting it out that way. Since our climates are so similar in terms of humidity and cold, I would imagine they would do just fine out that way. Unfortunately for us, butternut walnuts are becoming more and more scarce every year. There is a canker disease that has absolutely decimated the population. Which is sad because my great grandparents used to live on a street called Butternut drive because there were butternut walnuts all over the place. Definitely in a survival scenario. This medicine would absolutely pay off but I would even say it would pay off for the average hunter/ fisherman or woman. I think we fool ourselves into thinking because we live in a first world country that we have an immunity to certain parasites when I would say we are MORE susceptible for the same reason. When traveling, I remember we were told not to drink the water because of microbes and everything else yet the locals could do it no problem. Because they are raised around it they can handle it. So I would assume that makes us even more of a target for some of these issues. I can't tell you how many times I've cut open a fish and seen a belly full of worms. Or skinned a raccoon/ possum to see parasites right on top of the gut cavity. So I'm gonna do a 3 week trial of this tincture to see if I notice anything different. Today was day one.

There is a black walnut tree by a Pizza Hut parking lot a few towns over from me lol. It’s actually on private property on the house behind the Pizza Hut but the branches extend soooo far over into the parking lot. I collected some leaves a few weeks ago. There weren’t any black walnuts grown yet but typically when do they begin to grow? I discovered this tree like last September because I saw all the old rotten hulls all over the ground in the area so I vowed to come back this summer lol

First, to be clear, I tend to tell long unnecessary stories. Where I live used to be pretty rural. The properties mentioned are around two acres each... Our house and the house next to ours were built around 1935 and owned by the same families until about 7 years ago when the owner of our home and property passed away from cancer and was sold to our landlord, (we moved in five years ago) and the owner next door passed away last year. That house and property were sold and turned into a business (some type of visiting nurses management company). Next to those neighbors was another home that was turned into a doctor's office some ten years ago. The house next to ours has approximately seven beautiful Black Walnut trees that his late mother planted when they built the home, so they are well-established. The doctor's office and property next door to that house was turned into a storage unit facility that also bought the property behind our property and the property on the other side of ours to expand their business to allow for RV and big truck storage. During the expansion, they were very hospitable as we sadly allowed them to cut down 100-year-old trees to fence in their property, and actually, they didn't give any of us much choice. (Be patient, I'm getting to the point here)... For the past three and a half years, we have heard massive complaints from the storage facility owners because these beautiful walnut trees drop their fruits (nut hulls) all over their parking lot. For the last couple of years, we would go with our neighbors and clean up all of the nut hulls and just pile them up at the back of their property to let nature take its course, until last year when I learned they were medicinal and began taking a few of them for myself. Now that the property has been sold, it is my understanding that the owners of the storage facility and these new neighbors have been talking and may be cutting down all of these beautiful trees. What I am not planning to tell them is that a few weekends ago I was walking our dog at the back of our two properties and noticed a ton of saplings starting to emerge from their winter slumber and I purchased a bunch of root training pots so that I can get as many as I can before they clean out that part of their yard. Am I wrong for doing this? It just seems like a crime that without any thought they have decided to cut down a stand of trees that are over 85 years old. I am trying to learn all I can about the leaves also as the trees have just begun to leaf out.

A few years ago, I only got halfway through a project making a few court jars of black walnut extract in vodka. Then, I completely forgot about it. The hulls were never strained out of the alcohol. (My mom started having serious health issues back then, so life as we knew it came to an abrupt stop. ) Now, I just found the quart jars underneath the bar in our basement. I'm wondering if this extract is still good or not. I don't see any visible signs of damage from Kahm, yeast, mold, or a SCOBY. I suppose the alcohol would be diluted a bit more after the hulls have sat it in it so long; and, perhaps, it would oxidate a bit more; but I question if anything pathogenic could grow in that solution. I mean, I have trouble getting my apple wine, at 10% ABV and open to the air, to turn into vinegar. I have waited for nearly a year and went back to check on it only to find that it still tastes like wine. I waited longer and it just evaporated. LOL! ...Anyway, how do I know if the black walnut tinctures would be spoiled or not, after the hulls have been sitting in the vodka all this time? I also am wondering how long these tinctures typically last when they are made the correct way? I did a brief search, but I can't seem to find any quick answers on the subject.
@PalmettoPrepared

I always live by the mantra, when in doubt, throw it out. It's all up to your gut. I keep and have used tinctures that are years old and been just fine but I also strain mine within a few months of making them. Black walnut by nature is extremely anti fungal so the chances of it going off via fungus in high proof alcohol is extremely low

I take 2 droppers full in a glass of water per day for about 2 weeks then take time off. I wouldn't dry the hull as once you cut it, it starts to oxidize. If you're looking for a tea then just use the leaves of the tree.

How come many people don't even cut the nuts up at all? They just stick the whole thing in the jar and put the vodka in it on top. Just like I made hawthorn berry tincture and did not cut the berries up at all and it came out great. I was told 100 proof vodka is the best and it doesn't matter which brand.
@PalmettoPrepared
@PalmettoPrepared Жыл бұрын
Alot of it is personal preference. My reasoning for cutting like I did is to increase surface area. The more surface area= more space for the alcohol to hit and leech what you want from the hulls to the medium. As for percentage of alcohol, there are many factors involved in which proof you'll want. The biggest is water content. Since you'll be taking tinctures internally, you want to reduce the ability for bacteria and mold to form because that water content could reduce that percentage of alcohol from 50% to 25% which can allow some stuff to grow that you don't want. Since these hulls are green and they have a higher percentage of water (because you can't dry the hulls while keeping its nutritional qualities) you should use a higher percentage alcohol to be sure you're staying in that safe zone. I use alot if 80-100 proof vodkas in most of my tinctures but again, this guy just has more water so I went safe side. It's also very bitter so it's not something I'd want to take straight like I would a ginger tincture
