In this video Matthew talks about the identification and medicinal uses of boneset(Eupatorium perfoliatum). Boneset is a powerful immune system stimulant and antiviral herb used for cold, coughs, and flu. He also demonstrates how to make an herbal cough syrup using honey, sweet gum, wild cherry bark, and sassafras leaves.

Just stumbled on this. Boneset is one of my go-to meds. That and mullein. My grandmother was an herbal healer. She passed it on to me. We are mostly Highland Scots and German. A bit of Native American thrown in. It has been passed from grandmother to granddaughter for centuries. I am currently working on a book and database of my own for my granddaughter.

Dude, getting Georgia involved was absolutely adorable. Also kudos for letting us know where you found your knowledge. Not enough people post their sources. I'm not sure how far you are in your mission to cover all the medicinal and edible plants. But I'd love to see you do a video on how to establish a herbal medicine garden. I'm sure these are all best in the wild, but having a garden containing Boneset with wild cherry, sweet gum and sassafras nearby would be much better than having to go foraging for them.

My Granny would boil boneset and wild cherry then let this sit overnight on the tabletop with all of the ingredients steeping. Honey and whiskey were then added. As a side product; I got sassafras tea. She would start making this in Sept and a quart mason jar would last until April. Each of us would get a Tablespoon or two when needed.

The strong tea, by itself, is a potent purgative. It doesnt take much. You'll feel much better afterwards. The plant itself is a beautiful tall perennial for background plantings for yard or semi-wild garden areas. The flowers linger for a long time and are loved by pollinators large and small.

Good video , I find it interesting that I have been using a similar mixture for really bad colds, I used to get pneumonia easy . I used boneset , willow bark , mullien and ginger ( wow does it make you sweat ) and I would sweeten it with a little elderberry jelly . I would get over a cold in 2 days. The man I worked for , his wife was a teacher and brought colds home on a regular basis ... so I always kept this on-hand . I have used it for the last 25 years.

Thanks for making your videos. I have learned alot. I was raised with some of the old fashioned remedies. Step on a nail, scrape a potato and put on it, tobacco on a bee sting, vinegar and brown paper for sprains etc. My granny used to keep a jar of yellow root in the fridge. When we complained with our stomach she would take it out and give us a swig. It worked. I was raised foraging plants and nuts for food and have found alot of new things that can be eaten. Also you have a very precious daughter. I am so glad you are teaching her. The old ways are almost lost.

I believe that many cultures have had spirit “educators”, which may be why ppl shied away from herbal remedies for decades, since it was aligned with spiritism and avoided by those listening to Bible warnings on the subject. However, God made the plants made this way, and my religious family overcame this bad reputation for herbs, etc. to cure naturally long before the current trend. Not only are natural cures important, but natural supplements are necessary for us now since our foods, air, and water are contaminated with various things, either deliberately added for taste, preservation or to lessen cost, or coming about as a result of man’s conduct of our environment.

It's not that amazing. You spend enough time in the woods, you start nibbling on stuff. The human body isn'y blind, deaf, and dumb: you taste and feel the plant in your mouth, in your body, and over time you develop a relationship with the plant. There are quite a few plants I learned about that way, only to have my experiences validated later when I learned the name of the plant and looked it up.
