Thanks for this, fellas. Nice to see people bliss out over my favorite live jazz record ever. The solo on "All of You" is spectacular, but my personal favorite piano solo of all time is Herbie's on the opening track, "My Funny Valentine". For me, that one is more than spectacular: it's biblical.

Sure Herbie was great, but George Coleman’s sax solos here were magisterial - all during this 12 Feb 1964 concert at Lincoln Center; yet everyone seems to “sleep” on Coleman. Miles didn’t. Meanwhile, the Beatles bookended this event on the Ed Sullivan show. Special era in NYC

"Herbie's well versed in the Herbie stuff" is a great comment by Adam. We can forget that what has become familiar to us is still astounding.

THE best live jazz album of all-time IMHO (well I am a Trumpet player!). Herbie’s soloing on the whole album is outstanding - My Funny Valentine and Stella solos are also amazing.

Yeah they're vamping in fear of Miles so it's great but Herbie's solo on My Funny Valentine is genius I mean it's psychedelic to me.

It's a good solo, though I personally prefer the one on "Miles in Europe" record, together with another great solo on "Autumn Leaves". And while on the subject of "All of You"/Miles, don't forget great solos by Red Garland (Round About Midnight) and Wynton Kelly (live at Blackhawk). That's where Herbie's coming from.

Argument before the gig because Miles told them they weren’t getting paid. It was a fundraiser concert for SNCC, CORE et al

i think it's the first time I see those masters without a piano in front of them xd

In Miles's book, he says the concert was a benefit for an African foundation and right before the concert some activists, including Max Roach, were protesting because the foundation was a front for the CIA.

How do you do a review of this solo without discussing the crazy reharm that's happening?

Lincoln Center 1964 - I played this album to death and learnt Miles solos by ear (I’m a Trumpet player) but also took a lot of Herbies lines too. THE best live jazz album of all-time.
