Herbie is the genius who put the electronic synthesizer into jazz and made it functional for old school, progressive and abstract and make it all funky.

Herbie's vibe is infectious, he's having so much fun. He gives other musicians room to breathe and shine. Steps on nobody's toes, just brings out the best in everyone he plays with. Would be awesome to jam with him, what a legend!

Some of the comments on here are laughable. Some of y'all act like Herbie can't reinterpret his own song as he chooses. He wrote it he can do it how he wants. You don't have to like it but to criticize it as though it's unmusical is just beyond asinine
@kleinequietboykleinequietb71266 жыл бұрын
okay it's not unmusical, it's just the ramblingest, overlong, least groovy, least interesting live version i've heard in a long time. including those i've witnessed at the local yokel jazz session. he and the band had a bad day. whatever. CAN I SAY THAT, DAD? shit.

He once told me when he's being criticized the most, that's when he knows he's doing something right.

all i can say about this is that the chemistry between basist and herbie is just amazing, they are laughing during performing and this requires a lot of confidence, and herbie also looks like a great and nice guy which i'd love to meet, and he is also an amazing piano player of course! thanks so much for sharing this song with us :)

Can't believe this performance has escaped me until today, thank you for posting. It's borderline insulting to draw attention to one "part" of this remarkable performance, but I can't help it. @5:15 through 5:38, just blown away. Unbelievably creative syncopation, the looks on their faces... Call me crazy but it felt like stumbling, in control, up a hill?

Herbie, who's got musical capital to criticize his music? I love the original Waterman Man. He was quite young when that was recorded. He had recorded with some of the greatest jazz stars by his 25th birthday. When Headhunters came out it was a shock to the jazz establishment. Once I got it and listened to it I saw he redifined funk with his deep soul. They're still imitating his music. He would excuse the uninformed for their criricism.

I have heard sooooo much good music in my life but honestly, that is just prolific. I loved it all, but mostly the bass (sorry, don't know his name) and Herbie - that interaction, in fact the interaction throughout is something else.
