I am 55 years old. I started playing the flute in 5th grade and Jammed. In 7th grade... the school people told me there is no Jazz flute in the Jazz band. I have to go to orchestra. NO!!!!!!!!!! At 55 years old...... I wish I didn't give up. Shit! Retirement is coming...Let's Get this!!!!!!!!
@StevenCharlesJazz
@StevenCharlesJazz 3 ай бұрын
Please find one and begin again! It's hardly "too late" to get back to jamming, & I'm certain, whether playing along with recorded music (there's thousands of backing tracks on KZbin), or finding others to get together and play with, your retirement years will greatly enhanced! I've always been saddened to hear of people who played throughout childhood, even college, only to put it down, and wrongly believe, "it's too late now", go for it!!

I’m a flute player and Herbie is the reason for that. It was Live At The Village Gate. Where I met the soul of this masterful artist. I was touched by the emotional packed content of the notes that preceded frim his flute. Joyfully Inspired I started my journey. He’s my hero!

Herbie Mann Returns to the Village Gate was one of my first two record albums back in about '65 or so. The other was Bird n Diz with Thelonious Monk on piano. I played flute in high school and my parents thought I would like it. I was about 13 or 14 and those two albums are still among my favorites. Now I have both Village Gate albums and the Charlie Parker on cd and itunes.

Definitely those two (first heard Horn's Taj Mahal album, before hearing his Jazz works), as well as Tim Weisberg's early albums, & before them all, the first flute playing I heard was Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), and Johnny Almond (Mark/Almond Band), & also Chris Wood's flute & sax work with Traffic....

Saw Herbie at Pine Knob in Clarkston, MI, I believe 1975. His 'Family of Mann' got held up at the airport, so he came out and played the first set solo. I was close enough to the stage to hear his foot tapping out the beat, and it was one of the best hours of popular jazz I ever witnessed!

The song played at 20:14 is called "Gold Rush" from the album Astral Island released in 1983. Very unusual seeing him playing with a pick-up on his flute. I got to hang with him some years back, and he said he doesn't like to use them, preferring to utilize the dynamics of being closer or further away from a mic. But I can see he arrived at that decision after first exploring using a pick-up (as I did back around that time, as well). This is a great recording, and I love his use of a percussionist in lieu of a trap drummer, something I also did back then, and off & on throughout the years...

@tradehead Really? Speed and technical virtuosity are hardly the only components of "greatness". Dave was a great player, as was Herbie, to make a big deal about "who's better" is petty, & especially as a player yourself, you should understand that once a player is at a certain level of playing, it's just about whether you like hearing one cat more than another. It's like saying who's "better", Trane, Dexter, Getz, or Grover... there's no answer. IMHO, if a musician reaches & touches & connects with listeners, that's all that matters. And Herbie certainly did that, as well as being innovative, his collaborations & explorations of many genres certainly expanded the appeal of flute playing.
