I bought a J Herbin ink the other week. My first one, Bleu Ocean, great tone. I was surprised at the quality too. Impressive. There are a couple here I might try. Thanks for this review. Cheers

The names are quite poetic : Orange Indien = Indian Orange Poussière de Lune = Moon's Dust Eclat de Saphir = Sapphire's Shine or Sapphire's Fragment ("éclat" means both "shine" and "fragment") Lie de Thé = Tea Lees Ambre de Birmanie = Umber from Burma Améthyste de l'Oural = Amethyst from Ural Rouge Hematite = Hematite Red.

Herbin really does produce some lovely colors! I have the Amethyste de l'Oural, Emerald of Chivor. They're gorgeous! Hoping to order the Rouge Hematite & Stormy Grey soon but I also love Kyanite Du Nepal & Vert Atlantide! Anyway, I just ordered the Poussiere de Lune & Colorverse Delicious Sleep - excited to get them! I've noticed we have similar tastes in inks so I always enjoy your reviews & have been able to make some informed decisions because of them! Thank you Dave! 😊

I have Amethyste de l'Oural and that is a lovely colour, I'm not so keen on Emerald of Chivor, mostly because most of the online photos show a lot of sheen and I hardly see any sheen from my bottle, maybe I was just unlucky with the bottle I purchased. Rouge Hematite and Stormy Grey are great inks.

I bought the Verte Atlantide since I love the Green colour but I hardly get any shimmer out of it. Really want to get the Emerald of Chivor next!

Amazing, thank you Dave. I also like Poussière de Lune. I have a bottle of Rouge Hématite, but hardly ever use it (last time it was for Christmas cards...). If I understand correctly, the branding is as follows : "Herbin" for the regular inks (in the small bottles), "Jacques Herbin" for the premium inks in the 50 ml bottles (like the shimmer inks you showed in the comparison).

Poussiere de Lune is really one of favourites also like Rouille d´Ancre looks very nice together. Also tried J Herbin By Marc Antoine Coulen "Nude" very cool skin coloured ink I like it a lot.. But have not put in a pen yet I use it with a paintbrush.

I have found the Emerald de Chivor shows off it's amazing iridescence when writing with a flex nib on Tomoe River paper, I actually use a dip nib to maximize it's properties. It really has no comparison. Thanks for another great ink review, you have finally convinced me I need the Poissier de lune in my collection, only wish it had more shading.

I absolutely love lie de the but i also hate the bottle, i'm almost through a bottle of pilot ink so i'm just gonna use that as my designated herbin bottle
@PenultimateDave4 жыл бұрын
Yes the bottles are what really puts me off buying more Herbin inks. Although thankfully I now have various empty bottles that I can decant the ink into, and I tend to do this to make filling easier.
@frankplamboeck4 жыл бұрын
I have completely different views with my Viscontis HS (18k/14k - both F nibs): Lie de Thé shades very nicely and is one of my favorite inks. Whereas in my Diplomat (M nib) Rouge Hematite is flat and too rosé for my taste, Eclat de Saphir in the Diplomat and in a Pelikan M1000 (EF nib) a flat, boring "school blue", Orange Indien without any shading like the outstanding PR Orange Crush for example. Love the green inks (Lierre de Sauvage and Vert de Pré). Thank you for your review - I agree about the bottle design, it is ridiculous.
@PenultimateDave4 жыл бұрын
It might be because the Visconti is a much more wet writer compared to the Diplomat? Typically you will see more shading on a wetter nib than a dry nib. Most of the time you will see more shading on the wider nibs but it can depend more on the wetness of the line put down.
@frankplamboeck4 жыл бұрын
@@PenultimateDave Thank you for your input, Dave. A few minutes ago I tested the Eclat de Saphire with my Pelikan 1000 (EF nib), which laid a much darker (not broader) line than the Diplomat (M nib) who draws a much lighter blue without any shading. Maybe the main difference for this is more in the feed, not at the tip of the nib?

That lie de thé does look pretty flowy! The bottle I had must have been one of the drier ones because I had so much trouble with it in pens I gave it away to someone who liked dry inks.
@PenultimateDave4 жыл бұрын
The 3 bottles I bought were around 2016/2017, it might be that newer bottles are more dry perhaps?

I bought several bottles of J. Herbin in recent months this year and none of them seems dry to me, including Lie de thé, maybe yours was a bad batch...
@qvisionstudios4 жыл бұрын
Does this mean with the name change they're doing away with their old style bottles with the wax seals as well? I liked those. Will have to pickup some old stock while I can. I'd like to pick up the Hematite.
@PenultimateDave4 жыл бұрын
No I believe the same D-shaped bottles will still be around for some time to come, although I'd love to see a change in bottles.
@wind-flower4 ай бұрын
I my experience Lie de The is a very wet ink. It's the only ink I own that I have to be careful about using right after filling because it will sometimes create splotches. It also starts coming out of the pen darker / wetter halfway through longer writing sessions.
@FrankDAgostino772 жыл бұрын
I really wanted to like Eclat de Saphir, but in a medium Platinum gold nib the line is really washed out, especially on good paper. I've found that I prefer Waterman Serenity Blue.

i believe rather than j herbin to jacques herbin to herbin it was just j. herbin which split to two companies: jacques herbin and herbin i may be wrong though

I believe it's still one company but they rebranded to a more simplistic Herbin dropping the J but for their premium line of inks they called them Jacques Herbin.

I love Lie de Thé! There's a need for more tea-related stuff in pens and inks (^-^) But for some reason Poussiere shows much darker than here and Ambre shows more like a dark yellow. I don't know if it's the pens I'm using or the paper or what, but... yeah, I was somewhat disappointed with those. Still, great inks & great review, thanks!
@PenultimateDave Жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you. I'd love to see Diamine do a Lady Grey (orange) and other tea's in ink colours. There's quite a few centered around coffee but not enough around tea.
Жыл бұрын
@@PenultimateDave There's Australis Tea from Robert Oster and that's pretty much it, as far as I know. I'm surprised no Japanese or Korean brands came up with tea-themed inks, those are cultures who drink far more tea than coffee.

Could you expand your vocabulary of adjectives a bit? It's tiresome to hear you describe everything as "lovely". Surely you have a thesaurus. If not, choose from "exquisite", "appealing", "pleasing", "attractive", "beautiful", "gorgeous", "wonderful", "fabulous", "superb", "terrific", "marvelous", "amazing", "glorious", "delightful", etc. Thank you, and you are welcome.
