And given the fact these characters stem from classic storytelling that broke down all sorts of human emotion. , as well as good and evil… It makes sense that the Disney film would explore morality as well. So once again, we’re taking all these characters, and figuring out where they fall on the spectrum of Good and Evil. Think you know which characters are good? Which are evil? Hercules of the original myth:murders his family Kratos style. Hades of the original myth:is the only member of the Olympians who is faithful to his wife and doesn't seduce mortal women left, right and center and a overall nice guy as long as you don't try to get your dead girlfriend out of the underworld. Hera of the original myth:was responsible for the divine madness that drove Hercules to kill his family and generally jealous of the mortal women her hubby had affairs with and spiteful of the demi gods those unions resulted in. Zeus of the original myth:a simply guy really,when he got the hots for a mortal lady he went with it consequences be dammed. Conclusion:Disney's child friendly disfigurement has nothing on the real thing.

Actually now that you mention it Zeus did do the whole chaining up Prometheus thing in the animated series. There was an entire episode about it and Hercules not knowing that his own father was behind his imprisonment is quick to rescue him unaware of the consequences of his actions. It's a really good episode and I recommend it to anyone interested in checking it out.

I was about to comment that. The series is amazing and gives us more perpectives about the characters, especially Zeus and Hades. In this episode Hades actually tells Zeus that he'd like another job/some changes in his job, and Zeus is like 'nope i'm Zeus I never come back on my decisions', which makes us sympatjize even more with Hades imo

In Greek Mythology, the only really questionable thing Hades did was kidnap Persephone to be his wife, but even that wasn't his idea. He went to Zeus, who is Persephone's father (and yes,that means Hades wanted to marry his niece), and Zeus told Hades to kidnap Persephone and bring her to the Underworld. Also, Hades' and Persephone's relationship is one of the most stable relationships in Greek Mythology, which is saying a lot. I guess you could say trapping Theseus and Pirithous to die is also questionable, but Hades is only doing that because they were trying to kidnap Persephone to be Pirithous' wife.

The only things Disney Hades and Hades from the original myths have in common are their upbringings (being screwed over by Zeus into living in the underworld for the rest of his immortal life) and how both keep their promises. Hades only appears in the original Hercules story at the end of his labors, where Wonderboy has to bring Cerberus to the surface. Hades is cool with his nephew doing so, as long as Cerberus comes back unharmed. Fun fact- Cerberus means "spotted" in ancient Greek, so the guy named his 3-headed monster dog Spot like that's too cute. Otherwise, Disney painted a terrible image of Hades. Not disrespect to James Woods, but Hades was never angry or had any interest in killing people or overthrowing his siblings on Olympus. For the most part he just hangs out in the underworld and minds his own business, not bothering others unless they come to him first and usually being willing to help them as long as they could help themselves first. The only villainous thing he really did was kidnap Persephone and blackmailing her into marrying him. Even then, it's pretty clear from most stories that he loves his wife fiercely and treats her like the queen that she is, not like Zeus and the others who were notorious for cheating. Thank you for reading my ramble, just wanted to remind y'all that the "dark" characters usually aren't as dark as they seem.

The fates? I'm not saying they're nice but I wouldn't call them evil. I know it's a weird trio to defend so....I'm not. I'm just saying they seem like they're just doing what they have to and making their job easier with humour. I mean who doesn't that? They seem like they just kill, not out of joy for taking life but for just doing their job. It's kinda like calling Death itself evil, when truth be told, Death is neither good nor evil, it's just a natural part of life. If I was to rate them on good to evil....I wouldn't place them anywhere since like death they're neither good nor evil. Creepy....OH HELL YEAH! I find their voices, the fact they seem to be rotting corpses and how they trade that eye around as very creepy but creepy doesn't mean evil...I mean obvious example for creepy but not evil would be Wizardmon from Digimon....that mouth is just a little too creepy. Sorry anyway the fates I'd rate lower to Pain and Panic if what the fates do does count as evil.

I love hades in this movie. I think his voice actor did an amazing job voicing him. However, the only main issue I have is Hades being a villain. I know it’s Disney and already doing a Greek movie is gonna be the very definition of inaccurate, but hades is always misunderstood and most people thinks he was evil. If anything, Zeus is more of a villain than his older brother Hades. Though they did get one thing right, their relationship as brothers is complicated and the three Hades Poseidon and Zeus don’t really get along.

I love this video. For me, here is how I would rank the character's based off of Greek Mythology. Good: 1. Pegasus. I would rank him here because in mythology, he sprang from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa as she was beheaded by the hero Perseus. From what I remember, there weren't many stories about Pegasus. So I deem him most good. 2. Hercules Parents. I rank them here cause they were good parents. I mean, they were raising a demi-God with crazy strength. That couldn't have been easy. Also I feel bad for Alcmene (Hercule's mother) cause Zeus disguised himself as her husband Amphitryon. Which is how she got pregnant with Hercules. 3. Megara. It was really messed up in mythology what happened to her and their 5 kids. Hera caused Hercules to kill them in a fit of insanity. 4. Hercules. I thought he was an awesome hero in mythology. I have a lot of sympathy for him since Hera likes to be her awful, petty self and well, you know harm anything that has to do with Zeus! He went through way too much pain and suffering tbh. He has not had it easy. Ended up killing his wife Megara and their 5 kids in a for of insanity caused by Hera. Poor dude. 5. Hades. Yes, crazy I know. However, the only thing I can think of that was bad was "stealing" and marrying Persephone. Like yes that was messed up, but he lives in the underworld. Dude is probably lonely. Plus, Persephone gets to go back Demeter after spend six months (or, according to some, three or four months). He also willing to give Eurydice another few years on Earth, on the the condition that Orpheus didn't look back when leaving the underworld. So he is okay in my book. Evil: I would have to say this was a tough one. I'm ranking Zeus as the worst though. Okay so we will start with Hera. 6. Hera is just awful! I feel bad for her though. She married Zeus to hide her shame because Zeus had taken her fully. Not only that but Zeus literally screws anything that has a hole in it! However, she is ranked here due to the fact that she has punished people wrongly. She caused Echo, a nymph, to only be able to repeat the words of others because while Echo was talking to Hera, Zeus got away. (She was trying to catch Zeus cheating.) Hell, the worst thing Hera did was cause Hercules to kill his wife and 5 kids in a fit of insanity. Like woah Hera! Calm down! 7. Zeus. Without a doubt. He is the worst. I feel bad for Hera. Dude can't keep it in his pants. Not to mention he sentenced Prometheus to being chained to cliff, to have his liver pecked out by a bird (the bird varies in mythology). All because he gave humans fire back so they could survive. I could go on and go. I would name and rank more Gods, Goddesses and creatures but we'd be here all year. Greek mythology is crazy and messed up.

I love analysing this kind of stuff. I think I would have ranked it like that: 1/Hera: even in the series, she doesn't do anything morally 'bad'. In the Twisted tale book she even sides with Meg when Zeus is against her marrying Herc. In the series she's the one telling zeus to empathize more with Hades. 2/ The Muses: as you said they all seem good, but I'd put them under Hera cause of some of them having a bit of a temper. 3/Meg: even though she had to be on Hades' side, if we are talking about morals, she's definitelly one of the better character. She sacrifices her life for her lover twice, she seems way more selfless than Herc. 4/ Herc: as you said, a very good protagonist, but I'd put him under meg cause he seems to be more driven by his desire to be accepted/famous at the begining than out of goodness 5/Pegasus: yeah his jalous nature puts him in the 5th place 6/The Fates: ok they show no sympathy for the mortals, but at the end they are just doing their jobs. I'd say they are very neutral characters. 7/ Pain and Panic : like the Fates, just doing their jobs. Them not showing remorse to kill a baby is definitely not okay, but on the other hand they were asked to do it, and working litteraly for the Underworld, they probably see death as nothing special. In the series they are also portrayed as being rather neutral when they don't have to work for Hades. 8/ Zeus: ooookay in the movie he's not that bad, but the series shows how much he doesn't care about others' opinions. he never changes his minds or accepts that he can make mistakes, and many things could have been prevented if he had just accpeted to talk with Hades (thing that Hades was ok to do in the series, he tries multiple times to tell Zeus "hey i hate my job, can you do something about that?") 9/ Phil: he harrases girls and doesn't understands consent. next. 10/ Hades: yeah he's probably the most evil, but I wouldn't even say that he actually IS evil, esp if you have watched the series. Him overthrowing Zeus seems more like a desperate attempt to escape this job that Zeus gave him without really asking if he was ok with that. in the series he's also shown as being pretty friendly with people he has nothing against, and tbh Meg seems more like an employee than a slave, as she's not afraid to argue with him. (Disney also seem to think that he's one of the most redeemable villains, with Descendants, House of Mouse, Twisted Tales and this show on a Disney Cruise where he calls other villains to help him being more evil)

Despite the fact that these lists are all about morality, I find myself liking some of these evil characters for how fun they can be. Hades is my favorite example. James Woods is always great as a villain. Charismatic, jovial and sometimes psychotic, I think he's the basis for Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2.

What I don't get is how Phil finds it hard to believe that Zeus is Hercules' father, after having just watched him lift up a huge statue arm and hurl it way out into the ocean. How could he do that, if he wasn't a child of the gods? Also, he talks about how he wishes to train a hero so great that a constellation would be made of that hero, yet he mentions training Perseus; whom there is a constellation of, (right next to the princess he rescued and near the whale he saved her from, no less) and Phil even has a statue of Perseus holding Medusa's head. So how exactly did Perseus let him down?

Hades and the Titans are extremely evil! Everyone else is pretty good some are even rough around the edges. The Muses are awesome. I think that Hercules and Meg are so fun to listen to! They’ve got such great voices. And the adoptive parents and biological parents of Hercules have such kind and wise personalities and gentle voices. Zeus and Hera should have signed up for audible so they can read books to their son lol. oh yeah the adoptive parents should also sign up for audible so they can read some stories to their son! I’m sure they would all love it.

No because Hades had an exclarty reason to be angry at Zesus. He was cheated into the underworld and was forced to work there. He didn't even get a say in anything because he was the youngest brother. Hecate and Echidna are far more evil. Hades is evil but not that evil. He had an exclarty reason to be evil unlike Echinda and Hecate who just for the stake of being evil.

I always felt for Disney ‘s version of this story, Zeus was a jerk. A usually happy to baffoonery and ignorant jerk, but a jerk none the less. Much like Scar, Hade’s bro got the “kingship”, and in this case, instead of no position, Hades was told to rule the underworld, away from Mt Olympus, and in a job that never ended, while Zeus could choose when thunderstorms happened and the rest of the gods pretty much got to party and relax 24/7. As someone who works a ton, maybe I just relate to Hades wanting some R&R.... not so much the revenge against he who put me there, but that is at least understandable. His methods are extreme, but against a stronger opponent, and after probably centuries of this dynamic, anyone would be hitting those responsible where it hurt most. Hercules and Hera were just collateral. Side note, I don’t remember if she was ever in the cartoon, but I imagine his wife to be in this universe would be goth, as a rebellion against her nature mom.
