Varia has been getting training from Ares, that's how she was able to beat Gabrielle so badly. Gabrielle is within her rights, the challenge has to be answered if/when it's made by someone of royal Amazon blood. Ares is manipulating Varia and this whole situation.

Le personnage de Gabrielle est incroyable Sa transformation physique est impressionnante Au début elle ne sait pas se battre c 'est une gamine qui admire xena et vie un peu dans son ombre. Puis elle croit qu'elle doit vivre dans la paix et sans violence et fini guerrière, forte et musclé . Xena lui a tout appris et Gabrielle lui a appris à se pardonner à elle même.

Gabrielle was always better with weapons. I love how "ride or die" she and Xena were for each other. This show taught me about friendship, forgiveness, and the greater good.

Actually I think if Gabby went at her like Varia went after Gabby and didn’t try to stop her from fighting Gabby would have had a better shot. Varia used those opportunities to take her down when Gabby had her dead to rights

Gabrielle held back because she was trying to talk some sense into her while fighting. Listen Warriors are much inclined to hear wisdom after they're defeated in battle had she went all out and then won, then that would be the opportunity for Varia to listen without Ares influence.

I loooooooved this fight. This was the first time we had ever seen Gabrielle in straight hand to hand and she did amazing. Varia was better trained in hand to hand from Xena, Ares and the amazons. Gab had only been trained by Xena for years and just a little time with the Amazon but we never really saw Xena train her in hand to hand. I think if weapons was in involved, like using her staff...Gab would have got her but great performances by both of them. This shows how tough Gab was. I think her and Xena knew Varia was the better fighter but Gab fought her anyway with heart. After her lose, I love how the director gave us that moment of innocence Gab was known for with her expression, apology and the music in the background. Remember Xena didn't always win..she became who she was through experience from winning but losing also and learning more skills. Same goes for Gab.

Wouldn't have made a difference if both Gabi and Varia were using staffs. Varia was incredible with a staff. She beat Xena silly, when both fought with staffs in that same episode. Ofc Xena won in the end, but Varia was better with a staff than Xena. And even if Gabi was also better with a staff than Xena, she doesn't have Xena's hand-to-hand moves to go along with. Nor Varia's. Not even close! Gabi had her for a moment only because Varia underestimated her. I think Varia would've beaten even prime Eve (Livia). In a very very very close fight of course.

@@jay_kulina Xena taught Gabriel the use of staff. Gab never became better than Xena at it. The show actually left out a lot in Xena's training to Gabriel. Xena had trained her since she was a kid for years. Trained by the best. Remember for a long time we never seen her do much hand to hand. Only a punch and one kick here and there. Well, remember after they were crucified and came back to life. Gabriel was all of sudden an expert in hand to hand and had knowledge of using the Sai's. See the show never showed Xena training her in hand to hand nor use of other weapons. I believe a sword once but they figured out staff was her thing. Varia was not shown to be trained as sufficient and with years of experience as her. What the writers did was have her train with Ares a few times just in context we didn't see...not years..and all of sudden she is the strongest. That is not how it works and truly was a writers error. How the story went on camera and off is that Gabriel spent years training with Xena and with the Amazons whenever she visited them. The mistake in that episode was that it was the ONLY time Gabriel faced an Amazon challenge as her true self. That was the moment the writers should have paid attention to all her training, knowledge and skill she obtain from Xena and the amazon for years and have her go all out as a badass Amazon Queen to prevail. Because it would have made the last season and last episodes of Xena made more sense that Gabriel had become the second best warrior to Xena. Not in strength and in Xena power level but just in skill as a fighter.

Exactly! We've seen Gabrielle take on Caesers Soliders for Xena & held her own. Varia is a Amazon sister & Gabrielle was definitely holding back. I did want them to give Gabrielle more tho, she's trained side by side with Xena for years, she's smarter than the choreography shows.

Amazing fight choreography! Putting my two cents on the whole Varia vs Gabrielle... Aside from the obvious drama, script necesity lol This would have been Varia's fight. Gabrielle is a strong fighter but she brought the proverbial knife to a gun fight. You can't dismiss Ares training. It is cannon that is what allow human's that master it to channel rage in to god like strength. The moment Varia said he taught me that and he also taught me this...she pretty much went bionic on Gabrielle! The smart thing would have been to tag in Xena from the get go. It was hubris that led to Gabrielle's defeat. There is no honor worth a life and specially if you know your opponent is unhinged/not thinking right and is training under the freaking GOD OF WAR!!!! lol Besides the show made cannon that is an a right to choose a champion to fight for the one who issued a challenge.

I respect opinions but I can't really understand how people sais that Gabrielle is better. Xena didn't want Gabrielle to fight Varia because she saw this coming. She saw this coming in part because she tried to hurt Varia with a deadly movement and Varia blocked her. Xena said: "If someone makes me see this movement would be dead, exept Ares". Varia and Eve, both trained by Ares can destroy Gabrielle and when people sais that ar the end, Gabrielle became as good as Xena (I desagree), it doesn't change anything. Eve and Varia could have killed Xena because they knocked her down a lot of times. Varia is stronger, faster and determinated and Gabrielle, started to agitate and get tired really quickly. Xena, Callisto, Najara, Eve, Varia were the most beautiful and powerfull warriors.
