Xena didn't just "feel" she deserved this. As a warlord who killed thousands, she did deserve it. We all love her, but it was the only time she faced a proper trial and went to prison the way a normal convict would. Of course, it turned out this particular crime didn't occur, but the writers put that in so Xena could ride away with somewhat of a clear conscience. Yes, the guard was being a jerk, but Xena has done FAR, far worse.

@@angelabariteau yes it's interesting that she was jailed for the one crime of a thousand that wasn't legit. I think the writers did it that way so she could leave with a clear conscience of the end of the episode

@@Nepthuyea she always said she never would “off” women or children (her men would though) that happened to be a defenseless woman whose loss of life she was personally responsible for I believe she found that particular crime to be slightly more detestable than the rest according to her slightly screwed morals .

This episode absolutely should have been a 2 parter! There are so many things that got cut out in editing! I love how gritty this one was, like watching a movie.

I really like episodes that tap into Xena's guilt. Guilt torments her, but also drives her to act for the greater good. Such episodes are painfully good.

This should have been a two part episode. The concept was interesting because it was the only time (apart from the series finale) where Xena paid for her crimes the way an criminal would. Yes, the guard was a jerk but his behavior was NOTHING compared to all the people Xena killed in her time as a warlord.

@@MrMharris1990 It would have been a great way to dive deeper into Xena's inner conflict/guilt. I wouldn't have revealed that the woman she thought she killed was still alive until the last scene of Part 1.

The guard was more than a jerk. Inmates were executed on his order. And considering he tried to do the same to Gabrielle without a fair trial, who knows how many of them were probably innocent.

Thing is, Xena did not kill as many as everyone thinks. I have watched this since Day 1. She was never a so called war lord, If you watch the episodes, at one point, yes, but that was also the episode where she stopped. Very early, I think EP 01. All this is way after she became popular to to the mainstream. This is all after the character became popular on the various TV shows. I think they went a little to far, You have to remember it's a TV show The people that do this made Xena who she is. As the series went on, well, questions about her life, how she came to be as she is, had to come up with explanations , it got that popular. But, this is fiction. Great show, as long as one does not take it to seriously.
