He wants to have the most powerful AI in order to take action if his team sees something dangerous. That's the reason he founded OpenAI. He wanted to rival DeepMind because, at the time, Larry Page didn't pay much attention to the potential risks that this technology had. So making cutting-edge research, building the best models, and making them open source was seen as the best solution at the time. Elon gave $100 million to start OpenAI. But Sam Altman took the company in a totally different direction. That's why Elon doesn't trust him. I agree with you that competition is always good.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
