The Alante is typical GM. Take a great concept, let the bean counters ruin it, gradually upgrade it until it's right, then cancel it because the reputation of the car is already destroyed. They did this with the Corvair, Vega, and Fiero as well just to name a few.

A Prowler had a decent look but lacked everything else. ESPECIALLY in the Pony department. It really was the black dog in the family cause the HOT car at the time was / and still may very well be THE VIPER. I had a chance to pick up a prowler, but, for nearly the cost of one brand new, I made a quick HARD PASS on that notion. Yea, I bought a VIPER instead. ( and it rarely gets driven these days with gasoline prices out of sight and a V-10 that gets 8 gallons a mile) And FORD still makes the Lincoln Blackwood, sans the special truck bed. BUT instead of dedicating another LOSER to the game, they instead market it as the Ford Platinum F150 which ironically is also available all the way up to a F450. If you got the Dough, Fawd can make it yours for the unbelievably highest of high prices. All the features of a Blackwood's high class style and features with a price tag to match. The Ultimate Cowboy Cadillac.

Here in the U.K. we are baffled by the ability of U.S. engine designers / manufacturers. The Blackwood was just ahead of its time. Today there are dozens of gas-guzzling, overstuffed, leather-lined trucks and SUVs that are bought to haul groceries and pint-sized soccer players. Flaunting wealth and adhering to style trends is more important in the US than most countries. As for Iacocca, he did have his spark of genius, seeing that practical K-cars and minivans could be sold to Americans with enough hyperbole, discounts and rebates, in spite of poor build quality. It had some pretty innovative stuff, especially the AC they developed to be blow-less, the suspension is said to be very comfortable and the full LED rear lights (while the W220 S-Class just had LED brake lights). But it stumbled across its own Volkswagen feet, for Piëch's credit: He managed it to make Audi, a pretty boring brand in the 70s (probably even Opels at that time were more exciting) evolve to a premium brand beginning with the quattro, the full zinc-plated Audi 100 C3 and so on. But as told offering a luxury Volkswagen was too much (it's also said that they've lost around 30k €/$ per Phaeton), they even planned the Nardo/Syncro W12, a mid-engine coupé/roadster (IMHO it still looks really nice) that was axed in favor of the Bugatti Veyron. They should've better put these efforts into the A8 (at least the contemporary A8 D5 seemingly has got the AC with these vent covers) directly or sell it together with the Touareg under an independent brand name or just as the "Phaeton" (with less optical resemblence to other VWs) maybe similar to the Toyota Century.

I own one, bought just about 12 years ago. 34 thousand original miles, it was purchased by me from Senator John Sununu. It was his wife's Kitty's car, still has the New Hampshire inspection sticker on it. Since I bought it, I've driven it less than 500 miles. It sits in my collection of 8 other cars. My grown children will sell all of them when I pass, probably for pennies on the dollar.

The ford probe always deserves a mention, just because if it’s convoluted development, into what became an excellent car in its 2nd generation, and was also the 1993 motor trend car of the year. A very interesting video would be the 85-92 Honda civic wagon, and 88-92 Corolla wagon, both available with AWD and are essentially the earliest crossovers. Those vehicles were far ahead of their time and are the basis for almost all cars sold worldwide today.

out of all of these, the DC-12 DeLorean is the only car technically still in "production". Well, the sort of. Isuzu’s cars during the early 90s were a huge sales flop, which were the Stylus sedan the last generation Impulse coupe, which sold far better rebadged as the Geo Storm. Therefore, Isuzu exited the US car market to focus on SUVs and trucks. Several of those models from the mid 90s-late 2000s were flops, such as the Oasis minivan (rebadged Honda Odyssey), the Hombre pickup (rebadged Chevy S-10/GMC Sonoma), the Axiom, the Ascender (rebadged Chevy Trailblazer and others) and I-Series truck (looked exactly like the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon.)

A bit late, but it failed due to Lutz insisting on it being called a GTO right when Ford was remaking the Mustang into the super successful '05 version. If they'd just called it the Monaro that it was, & marketed it as a more upscale vehicle, it would've been fine.

The Delorean was originally going to be powered by a Delorean engineered rotary engine and it would have had a lot more power and performance but the fuel economy issue scrapped that. The aim for the DeLorean was to have a 250+ hp mid engines rotary sports car.. it's too bad it didn't happen that way. It would have sold better with insane specs like that at the time. I honestly think the Chrysler Crossfire was an attractive car.

I can imagine a large swath of the potential Blackwood owners were turned off by the small amount of manure they could haul if they were to purchase one. They probably had their accountants run the numbers and saw that it just didn't make sense for them. And the RWD-only aspect also was a big red flag for all those that were looking to use a Blackwood for sub-artic oil exploration or rock crawling competitions.
