One of the last recordings made on this unique instrument before the building was torn down in 1994. It was made during the 1993 ATOS convention in Chicago and was later released on a CD titled "My Final Vision".
Here Come the Hawks! is the official fight song of the Chicago Blackhawks ice hockey team. The song was written by J. Swayzee 1968.

It was a beautiful organ, with 6 sets of keys (technically 7 since the foot pedals on a pipe organ are also keys). While the organ’s console still exists and is in private possession, the pipes were destroyed in a fire

I know a lot of people like the song they play for goals now, but I really wish they’d bring this back. Canned pop music just isn’t the hockey atmosphere I remember as a kid. My home team, the Sharks installed a semi-decent organ at the tank a few years ago, and I’m glad they did. I may be a Sharks fan but even as a kid I thought the Blackhawks had the coolest goal celebration in hockey with that blasting horn followed by that monster organ!

Last time for a Hawks game was nov.7 1993 prices had gone up to $20 by then. I miss the Stadium. It was old, dark, and smelled like beer and cigarettes, but I'd take it any day over the UC! Pleased I was able to attend a number of Hawk games in the late 1980s at the Stadium! Just hearing the cups popping at the end of the game is memorable--due to the confined space of this building. This tribute is great!!! Always a fan of the Theater organ as well... The story on this one I have read: It was moved to Phoenix, AZ and put in a warehouse for storage. The warehouse burned and only the console survived the fire. All the pipes and accessories were "Toast."

@@Kaden303 Chicago Tribune did a video with Frank Pellico, United Center's organist, and he said the organ there is from a company in Pennsylvania that builds the instruments to sound like a traditional pipe organ. That combined with a modern sound system I can assure you they have there, they've gotta have that organ sounding as close as they physically can to the original in Chicago Stadium, or any organ similar for that matter.

@@Kaden303 They use an Allen organ, which sounds pretty stock. It sounds nothing like the old organ at all. You can't replicate a pipe organ with speakers, especially like what was at Chicago Stadium, it was a one-off instrument. You can tell it a mile apart from any electronic so-called replicas.

When I was a kid my Dad being an amateur theater organ officinato took our family to a Blackhawks game in Chicago. He went mainly to hear Al Melgard play the organ. After the game we met with Al Melgard and he showed us some of the organ pipe chambers. The organ had true 64 foot pipes and the lowest pitched pipes you could not entirely hear by ear but could feel on your body. Looking back some fifty years ago it was an awesome experience indeed. It is a shame that only the console remains of the once great and mighty Barton organ.

Hi tthomaselli, All of the pictures were from the old Chicago Stadium, except the one which has the big red sign "MADHOUSE ON MADISON". That big lighted sign is inside the United Center. The Stadium was a compact building which had a very steep upper balcony. There were 4 levels -- the box seats, the mezzanine, the first balcony, and the second balcony. I had season tickets on the second row of the second balcony from 1989 to 1994. Great seats. Felt like you could reach over the rail and almost touch the ice. The second balcony was so steep that your feet were just below the head of the person in front of you. Each row of seats had a steel rail in front of it, so that you wouldn't lean forward and fall into the row in front of you. That being said, there were numerous times after Blackhawk goals that you'd get accidentally kicked -- in joy, of course -- by the person behind you, or you'd kick the person in front of you. Or spill beer or popcorn.Growing up on the north side of St. Louis, I could always pull in the Blackhawk games at night on radio and listen to their games. When I was a kid, there were only 6 NHL teams, before the big 1967 expansion, and the St. Louis Braves were a Hawk farm club, complete with the same red Indian head jerseys. So I had an allegiance to the Hawks, even before the Blues were created. This was when Lloyd Petit did the Hawks games -- that's the gentleman who was their great announcer before the great Pat Foley. Even long before I moved to Chicago, the Stadium organ was so distinctive that you could tell immediately that you were listening to a game from Chicago on radio. So, I've always been a "house divided" with ties to both the Hawks and the Blues. Love the Hawks and Blues equally. Yeah, schizophrenic, huh? It's like when Archie Manning watches Peyton play Eli. Who do you root for?But when I moved to Chicago, I vowed I'd get Hawks season tickets whatever it took. The Stadium was the best place ever to watch hockey, bar none. A truly magical place, which will never ever be equaled. Great times.....God, I miss that old place.I was at the very last Blackhawk game at The Stadium, a 1-0 loss to the Leafs in the 1994 playoffs. After the game, we just milled around the stands, walking around, absorbing the place, and paying our respects one last time. It was the most surreal thing I've ever seen -- much like a funeral wake.Unfortunately, only a few months after that, I was transferred by my company from Naperville to Houston, and I've been away for the last 22 years, rooting for the Hawks (yes, and sometimes the Blues, too) from non-hockey country. I was elated to see the Hawks finally win the Cup in 2010. And again in 2013 and 15!

Another old barn with square corners that's actually still in use is the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore. It was the home of the Baltimore Bullets before they moved down to D.C. when the Capital Centre was built in 1973. What makes that venue unique is that it was originally conceived as a combination arena and opera house and had a U-shaped grandstand with seats on just three sides. The fourth side (I believe it's the south end of the building) had an elevated stage that could hold bleachers when needed, but it was typically where the organist was stationed during hockey and indoor soccer games (I don't recall there being an organist for NBA games. I moved to Chicago just as the demolition of the Stadium was wrapping up, so I never had a chance to see a event there.

After watching it on TV for many years from Pennsylvania, I made multiple trips to Chicago Stadium from 1992-1994. It is my all-time favorite venue and I saw games in five of the original six arenas and this was hands down the best. You not only heard, you felt the music when you walked in the doors. They were heavy into maintenance in the later years so the place shined. Loved the place so much I have one of the folding chairs I snagged on Ebay for $50 as well as a limited edition print after the place was closed. The organ was set up on a loft or platform on one end of the arena. The pressbox looked like more of an afterthought that was at the other end zone. Players had to navigate a 21-step staircase to get from the lockerrooms to the ice surface. There was a lot of standing room areas but the smart and the fast could get a second level position that was behind Row B in one of the endzones. For those who didn't get to experience it, I can only hope you realize the fleeting opportunities life presents and to make sure you savor and enjoy them as often as you can.

If all the specifications were known someone with enough money could pay a competent pipe organ builder to recreate all the pipes. That would be very expensive though. Even if some data is missing, I'm sure that experts can figure out the exact technical specifications. In Europe, organs from the 16th and 17th century has been successfully reconstructed based on much more incomplete data. At tremendous expense, but yet highly successfull. I'm sure there are skilled organ builders willing and able to take on such a prestigious commission, from all over the world. As you point out, it's a matter of money - but perhaps even more willingness from the owner of the present building. They are probably the weak link. I believe that sufficient funds could be raied, but it would be pointless without the support of the current owner. The present digital instrument by Allen is said to recreate the sound of the previous Barton - I beg to differ. I believe that any digital substitute would be far below the high standards of the original Barton installation. The only reasonable option is a complete recreation, possibly with some additions.

It's important to remember that this organ was purpose built for the Chicago Stadium and would not sound the same in the UC. Simply moving it across the street would not have worked.

In my opinion, they should’ve kept the stadium for the bulls, and the uc for the hawks. Just my opinion

Bulls actually won 2 of their 2nd 3 peat at the United Center(95-96 & 96-97)!! The 3rd title was won on the road in Utah.

@@wilnerolivier7971 Yes and only 1 of the first three-peat titles were won at Chicago Stadium, that being 91-92. The other 2 titles were won on the road (in LA and Phoenix). I was just saying that the Bulls won their first three NBA championships while playing at Chicago Stadium.

@@MrT8599 Chicago Stadium was the 2nd to last arena to host both the Cup final & NBA finals in the same season which was 91-92(Hawks was swept by the Pens & Bulls defeated the Blazers in 6 games) The other was MSG when both NYR & Knicks made their runs to the finals in their respective leagues back in '94(NYR defeated Canucks in 7 games & Knicks lost to the Rockets in 7 games) 1994 was the last time an arena that housed an NHL & NBA franchise hosted both finals in the same year.

@@wilnerolivier7971 What about 2003? I'm pretty sure Continental Airlines Arena in the New Jersey Meadowlands hosted both the Stanley Cup Finals (the Devils beat the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 7 games) and the NBA Finals (the Nets lost to the San Antonio Spurs in 6 games). Not to mention that ABC covered both of those series and cross-promoted them.

@@MrT8599 You're right!! That's a red card on me. I actually remember that 2003 was the last time that a Cup final & NBA finals was held in the same building while I was getting ready to go to bed. I guess the reason I remember '94 more was because it was the year that's best remembered for the beginning of the O.J. case. The O.J. Bronco chase actually took place while the NBA final game between the Knicks & Rockets was going on at MSG. It was one of the most interesting nights that I can remember because not only no one knew it was going to end, but that the game was relegated to secondary status in a tiny box of the television screen while the chase got the bulk of the coverage.

I've been there more times..back in the early 1970 for the ice shows. when the ice was resurfaced. the organ was played..that ended I believed late 1970s..w the changes of different organist..just for hockey games. mr.melgard played it the best back in the day..it should of been moved across the street. they had plenty of money to do it..I've been in the Tampa area the last 3 yrs now the Tampa Bay lighting have the best. now. it's a walker elc organ . they take 1st place now w that...chicago uc. should get back the old Barton console. install it ..I Gus's Allen organ co could install it. back in Chicago. uc..I hope the Rocky w ...will do it....the Barton belongs to the Blackhawks..it was a big mistake. to let it go..it' was apart of Chicago ..if I had all the money the Blackhawks had. it would of been restored and installed..in the uc..I think Rocky would agree...

They can bring the old console back, but, it'd never sound like the old organ because its digital. Only way to get that sound back is have pipes.
