When I heard this in a disco I didn't know who it was until I heard Carl's vocal and remember thinking ''wow ,that's 100% Beach Boys harmonies , it's different but the Beach Boys are back ''.
Here Comes the Night" is a song written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love for the American rock band The Beach Boys. It was originally released on their 1967 album, Wild Honey. In 1979, the song was re-recorded and released on their 1979 album, L.A. (Light Album), as a disco song lasting nearly eleven minutes.
The newer version of the song is over eight minutes longer than the original song. There are four edits of this disco version. The first edit appears on the L.A. (Light Album), while the second edit was released on a 12" single release (Caribou/Brother/CBS 2Z8-9028). The third edit was the B-side of the 12" single, which is a slightly shorter instrumental (backing track) version of the song. The fourth and final version of the song is found on the 7" single release (Caribou/Brother/CBS ZS8 9026).

True words! And not just his voice. With Brian not well, Dennis hurting his hand, and Bruce absent, he took over the reigns for Holland and the Carl & the Passions albums, got some new personnel, some stylistic changes and those records are damn good. But I agree, top voice.

Growing up in Sacramento, my parents had a great record collection full of 60s and 70s soul, classic rock, singer songwriter and disco records. My dad was a gear head Beach Boys fan who loved cars, good music, and dancing and had seen The Beach Boys a couple of times at Memorial Auditorium. He rolled right into the 70s with Disco. So I got to hear all this music on a very loud stereo component system. I was 8 years old when my dad brought home the LA Light Album. I don’t recall him playing many of the other songs but he played this one A LOT and he loved it LOUD. Of course being a kid in the 70s, I loved Star Wars and anything to do with space. That extended to music. I remember thinking that in addition to sounding groovy, it also sounded very futuristic to my young ears. I’m happy to say that, though dated, it still sounds that way to me now. Long live disco!

I first heard this in a nightclub in Aberdeen called Fusion... I profess I'd never heard it before but I absolutely loved it. The DJ was a guy called Mike Cook very good looking man who had great taste in music. This song appeared on his set and it went down a storm. Strange to relate I remember him playing this wearing denim duangerees and looking good in them. Any other bloke would have had his sexuality questioned.. this was the 70s remember... Always a good nights dancing when he played and the dancefloor was packed. Great carefree happy times and I wish life would go back to being the way it was then. Miss the disco era so much....

When I heard this sound, the song, I said to myself they sold out to the disco craze. As I heard it more, the bands harmonies popped right out. This was the best last song in the 70's for the group. You have to hear this song cranked up on a very good stereo. It rocks. When this song was on the radio, I had just bought my 1st brand new car. I was 20. I immediately had an expensive stereo installed. I remember driving down the freeways of LA at night, windows down, T tops off. with this song cranked up feeling like a million bucks. Ahh youth. The rest of the album was decent. But it was this song that would get you going into traffic ticket territory!!

imho i think part of it is track length, i love long songs (im a prog listener so its kind of a requirement) but i do feel like 11 minutes is too long for this track. it honestly just feels bloated, especially compared to how short the original version is. the point is made in about half the time it takes to get through the song. think there would be a little less hate if the 4 minute edit was the standard version of the song i dont dislike disco, not in the slightest. i will admit though that i think a different genre wouldve worked better for a here comes the night remake. i can easily imagine a power pop version of the song working well considering the length of the original and the punchiness of that chorus. wont completely knock the song though as i think carls voice is very fitting on this version, and i do like some of what the synthesizers are doing :] Im Also Incredibly Biased Towards Brian . Make Of That What You Will

I like it----they were treated like pariahs for "going disco" at a time when music fans were starting to turn against disco, but this is well done. As this was flopping, they rushed "Good Timin'" to be the second single from this album----much more traditional Beach Boys arrangement and one of their strongest songs.

On the tape that I recorded laying long side in Long Beach in 1979 the radio station that broadcasted it had a great DJ. He ( or she ) had taken down the the speed "a notch" taking away the somewhat "hysterical" sound and feeling of this song.REALLY GREAT ! Most of us back then didn`t have a pitch control and also the promotional 45rpm single that they broadcasted had a much longer alto saxophone solo than You hear here. I don't know why it has been cut shorter on this recording. Can somebody please upload the the full length promotional 45rpm single so we can here the whole sax solo ! I first met Carl and became close friends with him back in 1976. I first heard this song in 1980 (The L.A. Light LP was not yet released, but it was going to be released within the next few months.) I went with Carl's long-time FRIEND/employee Elliott to a house in Malibu that Carl and Elliott were leasing, as Carl and Annie had divorced in 1980. When Elliott and I arrived at the Malibu house, Carl was there, he had the stereo on and told me about a new song called, "Hear Comes the Night" which was the only disco song The BB's ever recorded. He asked me to listen to it and wanted to know what I thought of it. When I heard the song, my mouth dropped and I thought, "WTF is this?" It certainly wasn't like ANY other Beach Boys song I had ever heard, that's for sure! Personally, I didn't like the song, although it did have a catchy beat and that's exactly what I told Carl. If it wasn't for Carl's amazing voice (rockin' out) and bits of beautiful harmony in the song, I would hate the song, sorry. The LP DOES have some great songs on it. If you have the chance buy the CD because The BBs' will never write another song like this ever again. CHEERS!

A-1 gregormann7 ...it would be to easy for some to stick this into the genre of Disco but I think the BB were experimenting with something special here ,the combination of studio wizardry with the vocals , high falsettos ( especially Carl's ) the pounding bass drum and humming throb of the bass guitar makes this unique mix INSANE and mind blowing .It also has that spirtiual feel about it which also comes from the LA album as a whole .

Another dynamite Beach Boys Disco remake, following on from Bruce Johnston's 'Pipeline', which really zaps through the changes in this full-length version. The opulent symphony-orchestral production does overwhelm the song somewhat though, while the shorter 7" edit would have better suited the 'L.A. Light Album'. What the Boys really needed in 1979 was a strong original ala their 60s contemporaries The Rolling Stones / Bee Gees / Barbra Streisand / Cher / Diana Ross.

Long time not hearing this. Not bad but, IMO if Beach Boys wanted to play disco they should have done an entire album of it, like Queen did. Because I think Brian may have done it simple and fast, thus it could have been released between Light Album and Keeping the Summer Alive. Maybe that would've sold kinda well and Dennis maybe wouldn't have been so depresssed, thus not falling in booze addiction and not dying early...

The Light Album is a very good album, but struggled with the very start of Good Timin' as it comes in quite harsh then mellows, likewise with the steady beat with Here Comes The Night is a bit harsh if you get passed the beat which should be lower in the mix there is so much good stuff happening. I really love the album which deserves more credit.

This is BB trying to be the style of the Beegees......doing a pretty good job of it too.....but the Beegees were prolific at the time....Beach Boys had no way of "catching up" the Beegees.....hats off the BB in giving it a go with an existing song

the LA LIGHT album is one of my favourites, but I felt somewhat disappointed when listening to this version, probably because Disco was not my scene.... but now I see it as a stand alone creation and have to admit I enjoy it. Like many other comments here, The Boys were not afraid to step outside the square....although mike love would probably have been having heart failure....he liked the more traditional BB sound. Angel Come Home..now that USA great tune...

The vocals are really the only redeeming factor of the song. But you really had to be there to realize how much white male rock fans HATED disco. I remember going up to play the 45 on my college Rathskeller's jukebox -- and then some guy went up and KICKED the jukebox!!

@@bobdavis4848 Well, there wasn't much overlap. If you drew a Venn diagram of the fans, the shared section would be pretty empty. Disco is actually more tolerable these days, when it's no longer oversaturating everything. At least, the people making it were actually musically talented. I can listen to it more now -- as opposed to some of the hip hop my 15 year old likes!

@@trfesok I think the fact that those who loved both rock and disco a lot were comparatively rare is all the more reason why those who do shouldn't be made to feel like there are none others like that at all. I think "empty" is an absolute term word, like "unique" or "pregnant," which can't grammatically be qualified with words like "pretty" or "kind of" or "really"...either something is empty, unique etc. or something is not. The fact that I exist, and the writer of a 1979-ish letter I remember from Rolling Stone magazine from someone who also loved both rock and disco, means "empty" didn't apply. I do think a lot of musicians were jumping on the disco bandwagon in 1978 but I don't think in terms of oversaturation, as people always had the choice to listen to it or not. Yes I think the nature of the song structures, the strings and bass and sometimes concept albums of disco, took talent. The hop hop I like best is from the 80s and some 90s; not so much current type. I hope I didn't sound argumentative there. I appreciate your fair thoughts.
