At the risk of howls of indignation from the Beach Boys purists, for my money, this remake of their 1967 Wild Honey LP cut is one of their finest moments overall. Their harmonies are better than ever, and the string charts are positively brilliant and ideal for the piece. The bombastic final four bars sum it up sublimely. Pure genius!

Trying to stay "relevant" thru the disco era. Carl was always an R&B aficionado at heart. This appearance, concerts promoting it, & the 45 & subsequent LP on vinyl were just paychecks for Mike Love...
@richardosullivan81028 ай бұрын
The long version should have been kept as a 12inch single and should never have been used on the LA album. The shorter single version yes, the longer version did not help the LP popularity at all, which is a shame as there are so many good song on it. As for the singles be it the long or short version they had their place to be used.

This song should've crack the top 40 just like any other songs the Beach Boys ever made. At least it gave the famous surfing band their taste of Disco. But they did it their own way. It shows originality without copying others.

I remember seeing the Beach Boys performing this at the Montreal Forum in 1979. Brian was barely there. He would get up from the piano mid song and another person would jump into the chair in his place until Brian wandered back to the piano and continued playing. The show opened with giant beach balls dropped on the audience. Later that September I saw the Bee Gees at the Forum, wearing their "Saturday Night Fever"white suits with pyrotechnics during "Tragedy!"). It definitely was the height of disco.

A clash of cultures --- as they tried to jump on someone else's trend. While this attempt didn't fly, that LA album did serve up one classic, "Good Timin'," a radio hit in many parts of the country.

"Good Timin'" and "Shortenin' Bread" I think were the only two contributions from Brian on LA

They were just trying to go with the music style that was popular at the time. They figured that if the Four Seasons & Bee Gees could do it, why can't they? I liked this version, but this is obviously a lip-sync.

if they did something like this in - oh - 75...76...77 even - then they could have truly pulled a Bee Gees type grand slam - too bad right around then is when they started following trends more than creating new sounds - by 79 this was WAY too late - fun now but - it was getting really old by 79......or they could have covered something by the Ramones (Rock n Roll High School - or maybe Rockaway Beach) and gone in the other direction...
