Here I go killing again! | Chivalry 2

Straight back to business, it’s like I never left. Here’s a couple of highlights, and some raw gameplay, from a few matches of Chivalry 2 I played the other night.
I’m just as surprised as anyone else that I decided to make a Chivalry 2 video. For whatever reason I booted it up last night and had a bit of fun with it. It’s just as jank and as broken as ever but, despite that, it still has its moments.
It has been about 2 years since I last seriously played a melee slasher, so if my gameplay looks a bit rusty that’s most likely why. Currently my matches either go quite decently or I’m getting my ass handed to me, so my general performance is quite inconsistent right now. Also, despite the huge advantage it provides, I’ve decided against using third person perspective because it is not something I enjoy.
For anyone that has stuck with Chivalry 2, are there any changes or additions (especially in regards to the combat) that I should know about?

oh boy you're back in chivalry 2. With the recent patch they broke the dynamic soundtrack in the game which is just amazing. Wonders of Tenosia, Tenosia Rises, On Their Heels and Death of The Heir are masterpieces of art, not just a soundtrack. In fact, these 2 years have changed a lot in the game. New faction, many maps that are very different from the old 5, horses, new modes and cosmetics. There were no changes to the basis of the combat system, only the numbers and some small things change, like the recovery of the jab after dodging, which was introduced in the last patch, also counter timing was changed to all weapons to be compatible with the speed of weapon, so 1handers are not so op now. They changed the way weapons interact with barricades and allies, fixed the one-handed spear, and fixed the thrusts for the longsword and messer, if you remember this problem. I also just recently returned to the game after a long break, and oh my god, how good it is, especially compared to what I've been stuck with for the last six months. Music, graphics, design, combat. The game is amazing despite all its crookedness.

I'm not up to date but the biggest thing I can think of is how they adjusted the block hitbox sizes in terms of how far to the sides blocks will cover. They initially drastically increased it but that was causing people to block with their back so as of last I checked they changed the hitboxes to be smaller but still bigger than they were originally. Also yeah first person is way more fun, once you get your instincts back in sync with the game you can sorta tell what's going on out of sight so it doesn't feel too much like a handicap.

awesome to see you make a video, as you're the reason I really ever even got into this game in the first place. I think looking the only other change not mentioned is what's upcoming "this month"... stabs (and maybe heavy stabs ((they haven't decided?))) are becoming so that you can't stab through teammates. I think it's interesting they're not balancing any weapons with the new patch, but with this change alone it could alleviate a lot of the issues with mostly spears in certain scenarios. other than that, nothing much in a way. still just chiv

I gotta say, I find the idea of having a one-handed weapon complimented by throwing knives, it keeps foes on their feet cuz either they commit and avoid the knives, or don't commit and risk getting shot at with a knife. Great stuff!

Talk about timing, I just spent the evening playing Chiv 2 for the first time in months. While I still think Mordhau is the higher skill game, Chiv 2 is definitely still fun

Maybe one day we'll get a melee slasher that is worthy enough to be somewhat mainstream and not jank. I want nothing more than a melee slasher i dont have to constantly think about it dying on any given day. Great video though as long as the community is alive, the genre will be too.

So on Epic I use to go by Lancelot du Lac. and that's the username you'd see in my Chiv2 vids from a couple years ago. I changed it to LanceNP because I just prefer to go by my actual name online these days. Recently I picked up the game on Steam so in my future videos you'll see that I'll go by Lance instead.

I want to give you the benefit bro..but are u using macros? I've noticed you were blocking and it had "on cool down" multiple times. So I'm assuming u have script. I'm not going to say what software it is, since I don't want people to use it. I mean I don't mind but can u tell us the truth?

Nah I don't use macros, I don't even know how you could use macros to your benefit in a game like Chivalry. Could you timestamp some moments where that pops up on-screen? I do have a habit of mashing buttons sometimes whilst I'm in a recovery state so there's a good chance that's what's happening.

I was experimenting a bit more and I think I see what you mean with the "on cooldown" prompt. I find that I spam press the dodge key whenever it's on cooldown and it makes that prompt appear very rapidly on screen. I have a feeling that's what's happening here, and it's likely happening fairly often because usually I'm playing as a knight and it has a much longer dodge cooldown compared to other classes. I'd recommend giving it a go yourself and you'll see what I mean. Because the input queuing is a bit clunky in this game, and I'm also quite a bit out of practice, I find I button mash a ton of inputs when I'm in recovery/cooldown so those moves can come out as soon as possible.

That's another reason why third person is pretty powerful compared to first person since you can now see your entire attack. And yeah, you're right, as far as I'm aware pretty much every weapon can have their attacks can land off screen which is quite absurd to be honest. Chivalry 1 and Mordhau had its moments like that too, but it's nowhere near as bad, or at least as exaggerated, as Chivalry 2.

Agreed yes. I remember the ballerina dances players made in Chivalry 1. In you opinion though, which of these 3 games has the least bs like this? My guess is Mordhau, i know people can look like they're having a seizure but i don't think they hit you while doing that or whatever. You got way more experience than me and surely know which of these games has the least amount of bs when it comes to combat. @@TrixMelee

They're all pretty bad, but Mordhau most likely has the least because it does have some countermeasures to prevent the more extreme spinning nonsense. The only way you can really get rid of a ton of attack manipulation is if the combat is faster paced, but that won't happen until core mechanics like feints (which actively slow down the combat) get redesigned. Alternatively harsher turn caps can be introduced but Mordhau and Chivalry 2 are basically at the limit before things start feeling very jank and sluggish.

Yeah i think i agree, very interesting to talk about too. Maybe making slashes not count as hits at the end of their attacks would help? Or make attacks more crosshair oriented rather than physical ones (meaning you have to actually aim to where you want to hit regardless of the move). These games needs some serious tweaking. Good to hear, generally I hope on average players would get better at a game a few years after release. I will say that I've had to mix in more kicks and jabs to counter my opponents, whilst back when I played you could get away with just counter-morphing everything. I still find a lot of the input queuing to be quite jank though, maybe it's some bad habits I need to unlearn but sometimes I'm caught going into combos or blocks I didn't intend to do.

Yeah it's pretty disappointing that Chiv1 still does some things better. But that being said despite all the jank and general shittiness of Chiv2 it's still a bit of fun to hop in and just hit people with medieval weapons. At the very least it's far more engaging than Mordhau ever was since the Team Objective in Chiv2 is probably the only thing that's on par if not better than Chiv1.
