This is the Estes Super Big Bertha model rocket kit. It is a re-release of the rocket, but it has been enhanced with a 29mm diameter motor mount. In the past, it was a 24mm diameter motor mount, which was made the rocket underpowered. With the new mount, it can take the bigger motors, so it flies better and is more impressive at lift-off.

Model rockets are soo cool. I built and flew them since grade school (the 70's). Introduced my son to them, he fell in love with it too. A couple of months ago, I joined my son and my grandson to launch my grandson's first rocket. I love seeing this passed on through the generations. What's next? Mars?

Love Birtha. Say, the 3, the holy grail to us Estes fans..the pershing, the v2 and the honest john, you should do a build on them..

My dad and I built several Big Berthas back in the 70’s. One of our favorites for launching slowly with smaller engines

This is a great kit.....I built one and added your strap on booster pods and painted it up in the vintage black and white scheme from the 90s.....Looks awesome.

Painted mine entirely fluorescent orange to actually see it AND find it when an upper wind current blew it half a mile away !!!

Love this with the upgrades, especially the screw on motor retainer. But a 24" chute seems small for such a large rocket. I know the fins are pretty strong if a 1/4" laminate of three pieces of balsa, but I'd sure hate to get one broken on landing. Might using TWO 24" chutes be safer? (Or a 36"). Says it weighs about 10 oz plus the weight of an expended engine. That's one thing I always wondered about the kit specifications....Does the published weight take into account the "typical" weight of the paint and clearcoat a modeler would add?

Or you could try one of the Gliding Parachutes from Apogee, and have it return right at your feet.

Yeah I’m sure you’re able to provide a better idea of what parachute a rocket needs than the people who designed it.

@@codycast I am. Experience counts. I've been launching model rockets since 1968. I also have a degree in aerospace engineering. Many of these models have fins that often get broken upon landing if they don't land in grass. That's life. Hence, I often choose to upsize the kit parachutes unless I'm going for altitude, where I would indeed want it to come down faster. The problem is that they don't come down in a static manner, but the models spin (oscillate) on the way down. So they can hit at a far higher velocity than just the vertical component of velocity. Cutting a small spill hole in the parachute can help a bit with that but it is no panacea. Some modelers experiment with ring-slot parachutes, and they have a good advantage in not oscillating but about 5 degrees, instead of up to 45 degrees for "regular" parachutes. They are a lot more time consuming to construct, but worth it. I have various sizes mounted on snap swivels, so changing them out from model to model is easy. I haven't broken a fin in many years. Glad of that. I love building and flying them, but I don't relish repair work, especially on scale models. Sport models aren't as bad and are meant to be "flyers" not shelf queens. A few dings here and there give them character.

Are the fins one piece or do you have to assemble the fins, also?

You so have to assemble the fins.

I've seen a few of these "Super BB" launches and I really think they are missing the point of the orginal BB. It was overweight and under powered so the display was a slow acceleration and tragetory profile; sort of like a real rocket does. If you jam a big motor in it or one of these oversized models it just launches like a "gun shot." I'm all for performance (ie speed and altitude) but that's not the point of the Big Bertha design.

See our website in the description section for a the Super BB page. On that page, you'll find an extensive list of motors that you can use for those type of launches you'd like to see. There are a lot of motors to choose from.
