1.5 wraps; that’s it. You want to have a full wrap, but don’t want excessive buildup. That’s based on a lot of tests and what we used for airlift on military cargo aircraft.

Assuming you are referring to the 5k straps. These seem a little more heavy duty, I don’t see why 3-4 is in any shape “bad”. As long as you aren’t getting so many revolutions that it isn’t fitting within the space of the device.

Also, the more diameter you gain on your spool, the less leverage you have to tighten it-- and you simply can't get it as tight.

Any time you're pulling a stuck vehicle, it's important to remember that you can have a steel hook at each end, but that is all. a piece of steel between 2 straps will get you killed if a strap breaks. AND NEVER pull on a stuck vehicle with a strap or chain wrapped around the ball of a trailer hitch. Hook to something that is not removeable or factory-installed hooks on the frame.

He’s not wrong it is indeed a friction grab, but you also have to mention that if your ratcheting something stiff like metal, the thing your ratcheting isn’t going to flex so this would apply, but if your ratcheting something like in a trailer the trailer will flex a few inches and a few inches of flex gives you a few revolutions.

Good luck with that in wet and freezing weather conditions. You better have a good knife and some spare Ratchet straps with you. :P The most important thing on a ratchet is that it snaps in the right place so everything is fully engaged and you can close it completely. At least have as many revelations so you can´t see any metal parts where the strap is guided through. Always use those rubber mats , they do 60% of the work and check your anchor points, they should be intentionally spaced and suited for the load. That´s just my 2 Cents. :D

If you have too many layers it will bind up and wont release. If your load is flexible like vehicle for instance with shocks you want to take the loose out and tighten it so it takes the slack off from the shocks giving you more stable load over all that wont bounce in the back of your truck or trailer. After driving a while you stop and check the tightness and usually load has slightly shifted so you now can tighten the straps to propitiate tension and still have room in the drum with out binding issues. Never had strap fail on me. Of course if your load is rigid, then this tip might be true, you want enough revs to friction lock to work. Also as a side tip if you need to unload something by rolling it down, put the locking side to sturdy point, open the lock enough so strap slides, control the slide by gripping both incoming and out going strap at the same time and be ready to pull the lock if it starts to slide too fast. You can then gently pull back and let the lock open enough to start sliding again. Just make sure the incoming strap is straight and wont catch to your hand pulling it into lock, so i advice holding further away. Been unloading round hay bales like this from the trailer on steep down hill slope. Just connect the one end back of the trailer, over the bale and into front of the trailer. Then while being in trailer slide the bale down gently with this method. Works to other similar size objects, but havent tested on anything larger.

Don’t go cheap on ratchet straps either. Inspect them before using them. Keep them in a cheap backpack versus exposed to sand/dirt, which slowly slices the fibers

I lost a ratchet strap today on the highway. I was doing it wrong just like this guy demonstrated and believe this is why I lost it, strap came loose because of bumps. I will give it 3-4 revolution for now on.

The friction around the mandrel comes from the overlaying layer of webbing above the slot. I would think 2 layers is plenty. But I use shock straps. So the mandrel isn’t being shock loaded from uneven terrain.

tbf he has a point. I'm not saying it's gonna actually get significantly loose, but when I got my trucker license we had to do a course on cargo securing and since my family does it the same way, I always secure straight from the get go. yeah it might take a moment but its clean because there's no extra laying around. during training, we out two bindings next to each other. one without slack and one nearly fully bound, secured it and then bumped the cargo in a way where the ratchet flipped up and released the hold. in that moment I was pretty satisfied with the result, because the extra revolutions actually stopped it from slipping. I'm not saying it's bulletproof but as long as there is proper pressure on the joint it should hold.

Carpenter here and we strap down all manner of building materials on a regular basis. If you can't pull it near tight to start with and then crank at least 3/4 of a round on it, you probably aren't tightening it enough in my experience. You always should stop down the road once things settle anyways and tighten up. Whether it's got half a round or 3, they take the same amount of tightening

I learned this with my water tank on my carpet cleaning van... It kept coming loose. I used to tie down hot tubs in a job I had ao g time ago. I always had a bunch of revolutions on those but in my van, I was trying to make it look neat with a shorter strap. I ended up cutting it short once I got enough revolutions.

I'll say something more important is to store your strap properly, when the strap get dirt it act as a sandpaper when you're tightening, it might create a week point with time. Don't just leave your stap in open truck, trailer etc.. I wash them in the w.machine every 2 months or so depending on use
@DavidLDFL
@DavidLDFL Жыл бұрын
Good tip. You really only need about 1.5 wraps for the friction hold to do its job. It's just a second way the strap is held. The primary hold is actually the cam with teeth that dig into the strap.

I didn't learn this until I started driving a commercial truck and hauling 80,000lbs of concrete foundation panels professionally everyday. You definitely want a few revolutions on your strap reel anchor points/ratcheting mechanisms.

Been hauling building materials for 11 years, 53/48 ft flatbeds. Neither had a strap come loose, by pulling the tail tight and ratcheting down. Even on 4 inch winch binders, there are times, I only have 3 or 4 revolutions around the drum, I crank it till you can play guitar on it and let it roll. I also watch my mirrors and check the securement when I stop. Neither been hassled by DOT over it.

It’s like how a winch cable needs 4 -5 wraps to keep from pulling on the ferrule which will never hold much. I know this and have done this for years, but realistically, most mechanisms don’t have enough room for more than 1-2 pre tightening wraps.

Never heard this advice. I've done it the first way for years and haven't had any problems (I am a carpenter in a small town). But there's definitely a difference between picking up some lumber from the local hardware store, and hauling across the country. I'm going to start doing it your way from now on, it certainly wouldn't hurt to make it a habit.

As someone that's learned from a truck driver and been strapping things down for about 5 years now, both on personal time and at work, don't leave a foot lmao. If you're leaving a foot loose and getting 3 wraps it's not tight enough.

thank you! I have been kayak roof person, usually on top of one of my daughter's vehicles. No one owns just ONE kayak. Including racing and sit on top for beginners and professional where I can't make it go straight or keep from tipping.... and while using something smaller, I do something like this. Because I am a put it on the roof genius. Also if you take the kayak and shake it and the car wiggles, but not the kayaks, should stay on.
