I recently bought a CX-50 and I love it. Easily fits three car seats (one is a thin booster). I was unable to fit the car seats in the CX-5. The cargo space is also much larger in a functional sense, it’s deeper and wider. The CX-5 technically has more cargo space because of the height but I wouldn’t take advantage of that so it would be wasted. Definitely recommend the CX-50 if you like the CX-5 and are looking for a little more backseat and cargo space.

I travel a lot for work. Like 1500 miles sometimes. I’m considering a CX-5, CX-50, or a CX-9. I like the look of the CX-50 but a complaint I keep seeing is that the stitch seam down the center of the seats is uncomfortable. How much of an issue is that really?

This is correct. The volume space is misleading when you just look at cubic measurements. The real difference is load floor square space. The CX50 has much more load floor load space. NEVER use cubic volume as a comparison measure, rarely will you cube out vertically and if you do, a truck would be a better choice for something that tall.

Same. The 5 has all the hype but felt cramed and the seats were too small and hard. The 50 feels like a more regular sized vehicle and it's wider and lower gravity center makes it turn better than the cx-5

I've driven both of these multiple times as my wife is shopping for a CUV in this class. Looks are subjective for sure but to me the CX 50 is way nicer looking. The CX 5 is very dated. The CX 50 is one of the very few SUV/CUV's on the market that doesn't look like a generic egg. Yes the engine is older but its very good and very reliable. Myself if a new vehicle has a brand new engine design I wouldn't even consider buying one until it had a few years under its belt. Yes the CX 5 has more interior volume but the CX 50 has more usable space. How often do you pile stuff to the roof?? Golf clubs fit cross ways in the CX50 but in the CX 5 they need to be diagonal. On the surface the torsion bar suspension seems like a step back but in reality the difference in driving dynamics isn't noticeable. This is an SUV not a sports car and the torsion bar allows for a bit better off road capability and MUCH higher towing capacity and is much cheaper 100k down the road when you have to rebuild the suspension. I will concede the CX 5 is quieter due to the glass but not by a huge margin. If you are well over 6' tall maybe the roof height is an issue other wise not a problem.

The rear suspension is the most valid point and seat comfort for CX-5 but the larger screen and panoramic sunroof are good arguments for CX-50. It's shorter with rear doors that open wide so people shorter than me can reach the roof rack. Not sure if putting premium gas in. CX-5 helps increase the HP but it does in the CX-50 and it's nice that you can use regular gas if you want to.

Cx5 has the same engine. Both turbo and non turbo engines. Only the Turbo engines have choice of fuel. Regular fuel will output 227 hp and 310ft torque... octane 93 will net 256hp and 320ft torque.

People keep saying this is a wider sportier version of a cx-5, ITS NOT! Its not replacing the cx-5 it’s not supposed to be another version of the cx-5 it doesn’t even look like a cx-5, it is its own new model! Quit comparing it to the cx-5, it’s much better than the cx-5. More space, better features , MUCH better design inside and out. It’s like one car reviewer saw another one say it’s a sportier version of a cx-5 so all car reviewers started saying that.

We have one (A Premium+ Turbo) After 7k miles: PROS: Quality (no issues), Performance (it gets out of its own way), Looks ITS DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, Handling.. Like a sports sedan, TECH.. ALL the toys. CONS: Ride is kind of hard, SEATS SUCK ASS way to hard and narrow even for my skinny butt we added gel cushions, MPS's could be better, Gas tank is to small, some of the ergonomics are not well thought out. After 40 years experience as an Automotive Engineer I am WELL qualified to have an opinion.

Personally I’m not a fan of the new look CX-50. I just ordered a new 2023 CX-5 Akera Turbo and was blown away by how nice it is. The torque is phenomenal!

I don’t think you’ve driven the CX-50. The driving dynamics are incredible and the wide platform and rear suspension really keep it well planted. As stated by others, the “usable” cargo space is much larger than the CX-5. Go to a dealership and open the trunk of the CX-5 compared to the CX-50. Are you planning on filling the cabin with water? If that’s the case than yes the CX-5 does still have more volume. Finally styling is a no brainer. The CX-50 doesn’t look like an egg on wheels. It has wide fenders and a more angular front end. Go to other KZbin car reviews that have actually driven the product.

There is a fantastically wide gamut of off pavement driving between paved road and all-out mudding. Much prefer the look of the new CX-50 over the CX-5. It’s a great option to the Subaru Forester. Those who still want to drive on paved roads can buy a CX-5 if that’s their jam.

Great video. I think I bought the cx-50 for the reasons you mentioned lol same engine on the cx-50 brings Mazda’s reliability from other vehicles. The smaller interior makes me feel more comfortable due to me driving sedans my whole life. After test driving both the cx-5 and 50 I felt like the 5 was tuned perfectly for city driving, where the ride is a little more about where you need to go as opposed to where you currently are, by this I mean that the suspension was little numb, which makes the ride more comfortable for most, but personally I like feeling the road while driving. But the things I agree with you on are that I wish the cx-50 was made in Japan. I also think the cx-5 has an outdated more feminine look.

The 10 year old engine and transmission is why you buy it😮. The useable space in a 50 is more than 5. Cubic volumes isn’t the best measurement. Square inches in the number to watch. You NEVER cube out vertical space. You do need more floor space inn the hatch. The 50 has more useable space. Car reviewers are often full of it. BTW, I own BOTH current models. A 5 and 50. The 50 has more legroom in the front and back seats and more cargo floor space.

If I had to choose between the 2, i would go with the CX-50. (Will be after my 2020 Equinox dies which hopefully isnt for a few years) It may have all that you said which doesnt really change my opinion on anything, but the CX-50 can Tow 1,500 more lbs of weight with the turbo engine compared to the CX-5. 3,500lbs compared to 2,000lbs with the same engine. Honestly, the engine may be old, but DONT FIX WHAT AINT BROKEN. Ford is doing JUST that and its been recall and engine fire central over there. So, honestly, with what I have looked into, the CX-50 is a better choice over the CX-5 for my needs.

This is NOT a review. Poiema did not test-drive this vehicle. This is a rant about the CX-50 having a torsion beam instead of rear-multi-link suspension. There are many videos by people that actually DROVE the CX-50 and all said it had the best handling in the segment. First test-drive the car. THEN make a video. Seriously. This could mislead serious buyers looking for good-faith reviews.

I would personally think twice about buying any new/next gen-model for any automaker in its first 1-2 production years. I prefer smaller vehicles though, so I chose a 2022 CX-30 CE back in early 2022. No issues/problems to report now after 13-14 months, & happy with my purchase. On a side note, if you believe all torsion beam designed suspensions are the same then you must also believe that every clutch/gearbox in a manual transmission are all the same, every 6-speed automatic ever made is the same, every GDI engine is the same, etc. Some automakers are better than others at designing a vehicle around various suspensions & more. Sometimes a simpler, more reliable/sturdy suspension like a Torsion is better than what many automakers do with their ML suspensions, so simply reading generalized stats off paper & making assumptions doesn't give the real picture. My CX-30 with torsion drives & handles just great & probably best in its size/price class even against those with ML - because Mazda focuses on overall driver experience & integration of various factors to achieve it, instead of just throwing various systems together with little thought to synergy like so many automakers do.

I had 3 Mazdas and now have a 2023 CX5 GT. I believe Mazda is a superbe car brand, but very underrated. I love CX5 2.5L naturally aspirated engine and 6 speed old school gearbox. Very Happy that they did not move to weak 1.5L turbo engine and lazy CVT gearbox like Honda. I tried a CX60 in Korea. That's a phenomenal car but sadly not coming to North America.

yea i just got the cx-50 turbo meridian with terracotta seats and it's amazing. the steering and feeling are dynamic and the turbo makes it fun to drive. the only vehicles that would beat this in the similar price category are bmw x1, audi q3, and if you spend a little more on the porsche macan. the looks and luxury feeling cannot be compared to theforrester and rav 4. maybe the bronco can compare and it does look quite nice.

Used to have 2019 cx-5, currently owne a cx-50. I think I love the cx-50 more than cx-5. The look, drive, handling on curve much better then cx-5. Also more roomy on the cx-50. Love the car.

I see a lot of comments saying CX-50 has amazing handling. I agree 100%. I was disagreeing with the fact that Mazda is marketing CX-50 for an outdoor lifestyle vehicle. I don't think it is the most capable outdoor vehicle. There are better ones for that like Subaru Forester wilderness RAV4 TRD off-road, Bronco sport and more. CX-50 is more of a stylish fun to drive car just like any other Mazda vehicles

The ride is not great. Usually a firmer ride provides better handling but the torsion beam never settled down. I was also on the 20 inch sport wheels which I think is more for looks and 18s would be more suitable. They also didn't not use a multilink so much as kept the torsion beam. The cx50 isn't based on the cx5. For context I'm coming from a BMW sedan and looking for a second vehicle.

We love ours. I'd say city commuters may just need the CX5. The CX50 loves back country roads. The tuning is so damn fun and I can tell it loves being driven. Great for road trips too. Can't say enough good stuff about the CX50.

I have a cx 50 turbo and after 10k miles they changed the transmission and still doing the same problem. They also have to change a module. All the lights on dashboard are flashing

I had cx5 for 5 years, 120000 trouble free miles, only brakes, tires and tran service with oil changes, I bought a 2023 for the sole reason of getting something different, Mazda has broken thru into popularity with the CX-5, IMHO the CX-50 is more stylish and there are no where near the same number on the road at the moment.

CX 5 has shitty seats, has a big blind splot on the driver side with the frame in the way, no room in the back seats, and limited cargo.The 50 is less cramped and more comfortable seats and is wider and turns better. Also the CX 50 has cylinder deactivation for better gas mileage. After testing both the 50 was a no brainer

I've always felt that the CX-5 looks too small, the nose looks stupid like someone squished it with pliers. Whereas the CX-50 looks so much more manly and beefy and how it should have been. However i just wish they hadn't lowered the ROOF so much and had given it as much room as the RAV4 or Honda CRV or Kia Sportage then it would be perfect

It's built on the extended platform of the cx-30. It's design was for those who go camping... or do stuff outdoors. The roof was lowered to make short-assed people get stuff on the roof. Mazda sells a tent you can sleep 3 people on top of the vehicle.... hanks to the pillar between the door behind the driver's and passenger doors. It's Been strengthened to support the weight.

I agree. Mazda has cut corners with the cx 50.. no need for torsion beam rear suspension. It is more expensive than the cx 5 .almost 7 grand more than the cx 5. I hope they do not cut corners with the cx 70.

Cx50 was first to have panoramic roof. Touchscreen only in apple carplay or android auto only. Not in main mazda screen.
