That's what I've been preaching forever. Find what you like and ride. What bike suits you is all that matters. Personally I ride a Buell Cyclone. 1200cc Harley motor , really short wheel base that handles the twisties with ease. A lot of my friends despise my bike. I don't care. It's mine and I love it.

I think the Bolts style is awesome. It is like a ultra modern, almost futuristic take on a sportster. All the little design elements and angles look great. The 883 is a classic look, but effectively unchanged aside from paint and a great new seat. The only thing I don't like about the Bolt are the two frame bars that kind of call attention to themselves between the engine and the forks. On the 883 they are closer to the engine and more integrated. Both are amazing bikes in the end.
@farric14 жыл бұрын
@rockn roll I think you are right. But to me, choosing a cruiser isn't necessarily a logical thing. Therefore, despite its' obvious shortcomings, the Harley is still the bike I'd rather own. Superior though the Yam maybe, I still ride half with my heart and only the rest with my brain! I also owm a fair few old brit classics so that confirms my madness.

I still own my Z1 I bought at 17 years old and have had many bikes over the years. I am 58 now and truly enjoy the SCR. Its a very good basic bike that it self serviceable and repairable. Look at the vulcan 650s, 650cc inline twin and itll knock the socks off both the sportster and the bolt

Love the vid but just want to offer a slight correction @10:40. The only Sportsters that have a 4.5 gal tank are the Custom and Superlow. A few others such as the Roadster and Iron have a 3.3. The 48 and all others have the iconic 2.1gal peanut tank. Also, the older 1200’s may have only gotten 36mpg, but published figures for the new 1200s and 883s are 48 and 51mpg respectively.

Nice comparison although the bigger bore on the 1200 is actually LIGHTER than the 883 because they litterally bore out more metal, I had a 1200 and 883 weighed and confirmed this, however it's not much of a diffrence, the way to go is get the 883 for cheap and order/install the hammer 1275 kit, save on insurance and cost of the bike plus it's all bolt on for $800. And btw I do motovlogs on my channel as well (still newish to the game) but wanted to say I appreciate the work and dedication I've seen on your channel/videos, take care and ride safe bro!!!

A lot of stuff he claimed was pretty lacking. I couldn't handle it when he said that the extra displacement air was weighing the bike down and goes on to come up with the most obscene description of vibration he could come up with for a bike with the same rubber engine mounts. He tries his best to make 30 lbs sound as heavy as possible and somehow claims a 51 mpg to 36 mpg drop from the 883 to 1200 which is nonsense for anyone to even think the 883 has 42% improved fuel economy over the 1200. His torque numbers were nonsense as well to make the 48 sound as underpowered as he could. He then claims there is no engine difference between the 883 and the 1200 besides the displacement, which is wrong since the 1200 has a pretty decent upgrade in heads. He was also looking directly at the 2 gal tank with the camera and said that it had a 4.5 gal tank. Then he goes on to claim the Sportster loses because of worse reliability than the Yamaha without any evidence of it. It's bullshit that no one should listen to. He obviously doesn't know very detailed info about what he was making a video about.

You are a gullible fool. It wasn't many years ago when all the sheep thought all the Japanese bikes were cheap shit that broke all the time. Don't be a gullible fool. Don't make sweeping generalizations without actual reasons to back it up. Please explain to me how an Evo engine is less reliable than a Bolt engine or shut the hell up. I don't listen to fools.
@meanwhileinbronze.56556 жыл бұрын
NATA the only gullible fool here is you. I bet you still think Harley is American made, LMAO. While Harleys have gotten better their major failure rate as 2017 is still a whopping 26%. That's 1 in 4 dumbass. What makes this number even more significant is that a lot af Hardley Ablesons riders only rider on weekends. I USED to own a sporster 1200 and at 20k I had to rebuild the top end. I ride year round, and put 16k a year on my motorcycles. The Harley lasted me less than a year and a half. Overpriced pos. Rebuilt it and sold it. For you to try and compare Yamaha reliability with Harley has got to be the dumbest thing I ever heard and only a fool would say they are in the same level. You want proof, Google that shit yourself, any motorcycle magazine, user reviews, KZbin videos they all have the same thing in common and all say the same thing for a reason, Harley is not reliable. Harley riders are nothing but posers playing dress up with their bullshit bandanas, and assless chaps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6vdnYFor6hrhrc
@NATAWS96 жыл бұрын
Almost everything you said is bullshit and proves you are a fool. 1. I've never said anything about HD being or not being American made. I'd call this a strawman, but it has to appear to be logical to be a strawman which it isn't... 2. Their failure rate is 26%? What exactly are you even talking about? Failure of what? The Evo? The big twins? The Revolution engines? The spokes loosened on a wheel? GTFO of here with those bullshit made up stats. 3. HD owners only ride on weekends? Is this whole comment of yours a fucking fantasy you invent in your head to feel good about yourself?" 4. You owned a Sportster and had to rebuild the top end at 20K miles. This doesn't prove reliability since there are individual cases from every mass produced motorcycle that can claim the same. Also, the Evo heads are one of the best parts of that motor. It is a quad cam OHV with perfectly parallel rods that allow for extra high lift and airflow compared to the big twins and their off-angled rod-to-rocker contact. How is this worse than the faux-OHV heads on the Bolt? You failed to ID what even failed on your bike. 5. You put 16K miles on your bike before? I don't care and didn't ask. And you wanting to over-exaggerate shit on the internet is irrelevant and makes you look like a child. 6. I didn't compare Yamaha reliability to HD, do you fail at reading comprehension? I clearly could though, since ALL motorcycles on the road are comparable. 7. I don't want proof. I want you to list an actual factual point on what is inferior between the two engines instead of bullshit generalizations and fantasies that are for fools. If you don't want to do that, then why are you even commenting to me? 8. HD riders all dress up and wear assless chaps? Do you know anything that isn't a bullshit made-up fantasy in your head?

Bottom line, this comes down to a personal choice on what you want. I have 2 sportsters. My 88, 883 which is now a rigid converted to 1200 with buell xb heads. The bike got totaled when a horse trailer broke at the hitch and came straight at me hitting the bike on the rear swingarm totally destroying the frame. We rebuilt the bike as a bobber style rigid, and now the bike is undergoing some key changes (most notable engine). I love this bike. I love the ride. It's super low to the ground with very little lean angle, and I can still handle the curves comfortably, and hold the line better than any softail I've owned. And yes it was my first Harley. My current daily rider is an 03 883 xlh. It's a really good bike for what it is. It has 9 in mini apes slightly rolled up, and a custom 2 into 1 exhaust . It's by no means a powerhouse, but it has more than enough power to feel safe on the highway. It's been lowered with burly super slammer shocks, and the front tubes were adjusted to match. It's comfortable to ride, and can be ridden all day without any issues. Keep in mind, this is by no means some big touring bike where you don't feel anything. You definitely feel the vibration in the road. But I like that. I like that feel because it lets me know what the bike is doing, and how it's responding in its current environment. I love both of my bikes. I have never ridden Yamaha's bolt, but I am a fan of these bikes. I like the look, but not because it resembles the sportster. Yes, it has some similarities, but it still maintains its own particular style. I do hate the airbox it has though, and it is known that the these bikes do have some quirks and issues to deal with. But that is the case with every single motorcycle there is. All of these models are great bikes. This is not gonna be about what bike is best... it's about what bike is best for you. And just so you don't think I'm set on Harleys, I've owned and ridden several different bikes. My first streetbike was a 97 Kawasaki Zephyr 500. It was a great little bike that was super fun. I also had a 2010 Honda Fury. Man I loved that bike, and would own another one in a heartbeat if the opportunity arrived. My last Japanese bike was a 97 Yamaha Vstar 650 classic. I bought it after finding it in a yard where it sat for a year and a half without being started. I took it home, and rode it for the first time 4 hours later. Carb work, new pipes, AIS delete, and j slammed suspension completed my work on the bike. I bought it to be a quick flip, but ended up keeping it for 2 1/2 years before selling it. The bike was horrible in slow speed handling, but after slamming it down, was perfect. It was still smooth and comfortable to ride. The only reason I sold it was because it was too small. A bike needs to fit the rider. You shouldn't rule out any bike without riding it, and seeing how you feel about it. That being said, there's truly no way to say which bike is better. It's which bike is better for you.

As a Honda guy who is a HD convert #dynaBro it doesn't take much to beat a a sportster
@stevemalzone60814 жыл бұрын
That's funny since a stock 1200 Sporty is quicker than pretty much every big twin out of the box. Yeah, you'll inch on me at 90 when I run out of gear, great job. You want a quick tossable bike, get a Sporty. You want fast, get a V-Rod. You want the best of neither world, get a Dyna.

Honest review/opinion. I've had my Bolt for over 3.5 years and hands down it is the best decision I had ever made. Very reliable as I had only changed the tires once and had 3 oil changes. Everything still performs to this. This is a great bike for someone who does not want to pay the "Harley Tax" on parts and the bike itself. Not knocking Harleys as they are nice bikes but I ride with friends who have both 883s and 1200s Sportsters and their maintenance tab is much higher than mine. The only downside is that the aftermarket parts are a bit harder to find than Sportsters. However, I had still managed to get Vance & Hines exhaust, intake, fuelpak, LED headlights, Hagon performance stocks, Baron mini apes, and a warrior fairing/cowl. Really fun bike to own. It is definitely faster than the 883 but a bit slower than the 1200. However, with the proper aftermarket parts and an ECU flash it will bring it a bit closer. At the end of the day it is a well rounded bike.

But Dan ... The Bolt looks like shit.
@drzaius8446 жыл бұрын
This. The Bolt is probably a fine motorcycle but if the look of it doesn't grab me by the balls, it isn't worth much to me. That 883 looks beautiful compared to the generic-looking Bolt with gawdawful tank seams - the overall shape of the Bolt looks like a banana to me, like a freaking Virago from the '80s. I have a 2006 Sporty 1200 and I love it, but stock Sporties need help. I modded the shit out of mine, because the stock brakes and suspension suck hard, it was a dangerous bike given how I ride. Bought it used with 7K miles on it, have 35K on there now and no reliability issues. None. Extremely reliable bike and going strong. The only motorcycle I've owned that has given me trouble was a Yamaha Seca II. Yes the Sporty shakes, we call it character lol. I test rode a Softtail once (b motor with counterbalancers) and I couldn't even tell it was running, I hated it. How do you even know when to shift??? I imagine I would dislike the Bolt as well. Sportsters are not about refinement, they are about 1957 American locomotive aggression, and a copycat from Japan doesn't make sense to me, especially when the cost and reliability is the same. There is a Bolt in my neighborhood with an aftermarket exhaust, it sounds really good. As long as you ride, you're cool in my book. PS. That 1200 in the video was all wrong. Z bars and a springer seat? Come on.

Yeeeeahhhh that's what I was thinking the whole time. It looks like a knockoff. Less refined. Sure, on paper it mignt look better and handle better, but the harley imo looks much better. It sucks that its not as quick.

Better in every way? No comparison in build quality, no comparison in resale value. Yamaha can’t give the Bolt away there are 2014,-2016 Bolts on dealers showrooms in my area for 3000 dollars off msrp and still don’t sell. As far as dealer support and fellowship of riders you can’t even compare. That being said I think you should ride whatever you like wth out any prejudice. I have owned magnas,Vulcans.boulevards,nighthawks,road kings,iron883,forty eight,1200custom, enjoyed them all in their own way.

Took me 6 months to decide which to buy and i ended up with A 2014 all black first bolt model. If i was to pick again i would do the yam bolt again. My fav is HD street bob but if YAM makes a bigger bolt with a bigger engine i would go with it too

Glad to see this comparison. its a harley world where I live and me getting this bike is gonna stir up some attention especially once I turn the fairings pink! I look forward to it.

I lost the license plate bracket on the ride home on my 2016 883. Then the exhaust bolts came loose and then dragged on the ground. Then the air filter bolt fell off so the cover went flying... then I upgraded the exhaust and bolted it on with red lock tight. One of the bolts is already gone. Got an oil leak at 8000 miles.

I LOVED my V-Rod Muscle. But I had purchased a 1200 NightRod Sportster before it, and just like this 883, even with 5 gears, one more than my first sportster 20-some years ago, the 1200 STILL revved WAY too high trying to cruise at 80+ mph. And sorry, that's how fast highway traffic often goes, and you HAVE to be able to keep up for your own safety. There was a time when I wouldn't have even considered that Yamaha, but you are absolutely right about all of this stuff. Thanks!

The 48 is not the only 1200 Sportster H-D make. Re sale of Harley is going to be much better than the bolt.

Dude , you have my respect for being honest ... I wasn't sure which way you were going to go. I knew the Bolt was the way to go if your looking for a 50 hp bike, which I could never force myself to ride after being spoiled by the near 200 hp of the current R1'... But you came thru at the end and admitted what some of us already knew. Kudos Dan RESPECT

I've got to say, I personally own a 2011 Sportster I bought while I was working for a honda-yamaha dealer and I have rode my fair share of Yamaha bolts, but I completely disagree with the bolt feeling like a better bike. The cylinder head and air box on the bolt dig into your leg and the pegs and exhaust are absolutely in a terrible location. As far as a comfortable ride the Sportster wins without any argument. If you want a small cruiser that isn't a Harley buy a Honda Shadow. Much more comfortable and still fun

I love my 2019 bolt r spec. Mine is silver and I love it. I bought it in march and I can’t tell you how many people have asked me if it’s a Harley lol. And it’s my first bike and I feel like the power is perfect for me. The bike is quick enough to be fun but not accidentally over throttle and slide out or 12 o clock it hahaha
