I am a firm believer that no matter the bike, it’s the same breeze on your knees. But as someone who’s bike is my main mode of transportation and has put almost 24,000 miles on my bike in the last 11 months, I am extremely satisfied with my 2015 road glide special. The 103 ain’t fast, it don’t like sharp curves at 90 mph, but you can stretch out, listen to music and burn up 5.5 gallons of gas without stopping to wake your buttcheeks up. It’s my “Roadcliner”

Yes if youre doing that mind of miles on a bike in a year things like hypernaked budget bikes start to struggle. A big giant vtwin with a winscreen, storage from the getgo, gps built in, big gas tank. If you can afford it its worth it. 800 miles each way sucks on a motorcycle compared to a car anyway but if irs on a bike like that it really closes the gap. Max hp doesnt matter when you flick the cruise at 81 for the next 500 miles. Its rrally nice when youre at 85 and the motor isnt begging for mercy. That bike will handle much higher milage than a smaller engine really strung out. Even you look at thr indian scout 1200 its definely plenty of power for cross country but 400 more 500 600 more what really is it? I had a kawadaki vulcan 1600 and a vulcan 2000 in the garage at the same time they were both the same year. the 2000 got better fuel economy 😂 but ut weighed a lot the 1600 weighed a lot. It was very nice on the interstate but sucked at slow speeds

Best Yammie rant ever. "You don't have to live like this". Hilarious! Completely agree. If you have ridden bikes from different brands and motorcycle segments and you still love your harley, that is great. What I don't like is how many people tell me that they are the greatest bikes ever made but haven't ridden anything else. I grew up dreaming of a harley but then I rode a few of them. I will never spend my hard earned money on that when there are so many bikes that are so much better. In my opinion that is.

Story time. Been riding since 2016, not long, but finally I had my first "real bike" experience in 2021. Went to a gas station on my FZ07 (best commuter daily IMHO) and an older guy was eyeing it. He came over and asked the size of the engine. I replied "700, but maybe high 600," and almost on a script he said "you need to sell that and get a REAL bike next time." Yammie kind of hit the nail on the head when he talked about the price vs what you are getting. He's absolutely right. With Harley, most guys are spending more for the name than for actual all around performance. I understand there are niches, but when you put pen to paper, you can almost always spend less and get more when it comes to other bikes vs Harley.

Yeah big difference from the big Indians. the 111 and 116 are night and day different even if the power difference isn't huge, the 111 is butter smooth, the 116 is tuned to feel "fast" so runs rough and has really jerky throttle response. Most of the M8 Harleys have really smooth throttle response.
@griemakr
@griemakr 2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t get a chance to test my sport glide as stock 107, dealer already had it as stage 1. I found it pulled harder than the stick low rider s, that tune is night and day, wonder if the 114 wakes up more? Doesn’t matter, it’s enough for what I use it for. I traded an FJR1300 for it, big difference is the SG doesn’t turn into a fog when I go 2 up with luggage like the FJR did.
@johnraconteur1723
@johnraconteur1723 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that the difference was unnoticeable for me, but not noticable enough to regret my 107 Street Bob. When I rode the LRS with the 114 I noticed that making a bit more power meant that the motor turned a bit slower at any given point, like 45mph in 3rd gear. I was also able to roll up in speed a bit more before upshifts in each gear. But is that even just the extra inches? I don't know if the primary and final drive gear ratios are the same for the 107 and 114.

Im european, have had 4cil japanese stuff, old 2 stroke sport things (NSR, RD), even classic 6 cil italian things (Benelli 900 sei) etc etc... And now i own a Sport Glide, and cant be more pleased. I wanted a bike i could ride at "mostly" legal speeds and not get anxious about it if you know what i mean; i dont "want to want" to do triple the speed limit. I enjoy the Sport Glide even while stuck in heavy traffic. I have done a couple 650km rides, with the control cruise at 135kmh just like nothing, and enjoy scratching the pegs on the road when following my friends BMWs or Multistradas too. The bags are great, the sound is great, kids (and girls) look at it when you are waiting for a traffic light, people take pictures when you park, ask you about the bike... You can drive a Mercedes CL, or you can drive a Rolls-Royce Corniche. The Merc is clearly better, but i´ll take the RR.

Yeah I think the rebel 300 is going to be my first bike. I was going to go with a CBR300R or a 500r but everyone keeps mentioning that same thing "it doesn't handle a cruiser at all, but it's very tame like a cruiser." As a first timer that sounds very appealing to me and also, I don't care what anyone says, Honda is the way to go at least for me. My 32 year old accord is an absolute tank and refuses to die, where as my 04 Chrysler and 05 escalade both have given me trouble within the first 4 trips of my 2 hour drive to work back and forth. Honda doesn't like it but I've driven it 1,000 miles back and forth to work and she won't let me down. Sometimes I think she's going to, and sometimes I'm CONVINCED she is going to. Everything she surprises me. I have to go with honda, so I think a rebel is where I'm starting.

A friend of mine son just bought a Honda Rebel 1000 for his first bike because he wasnt confident with buying a 600-700 pound bike to learn on. His father and I both have HD touring bikes and both discouraged him from buying a Sportster because we are of the opinion that a Sportster is not a good beginner bike. He tested the Sportster and the Rebel and chose the latter. I rode the Rebel, it is a fine little bike. It is a great beginner bike, or to just cruise around town. But make no mistake about it, its not anywhere in the neighborhood of a Softail Harley. It is not something I would want to jump on the interstate and cruise for 2-3 hours or operate in high speed wind shere. It does have some nice little gadgets such as the traction control and braking settings and throttle selection. The only thing is no other bikes have that so one should not become dependent on that. All that being said though, it is a fine ass bike, he loves it and rides it more than he drives his truck, so thats all that manners. I would recommend that or the 500 to anyone, especially a beginner in a heartbeat. Im not necessarily a Harley snob though, I say whatever feels comfortable and gets you out there roll with it, everyone is different.

Harley needs to work hard on their prices and options. Here in Europe they destroyed sporster and iron to the new sporster which is nice but terrible expensive as well, and is 0 sporster as we knew as sporster line. Sportglide should come with 114 for this price, and street bob should be even cheaper if now is the new "entry level" en europe, because the softail standard in Spain is around 15.500€ new and you must pay to homologate passenger sit and pay more stuff, which should be illegal. Sportglide is incredible beauty on my opinion but hd is too expensive and the bike is super heavy ( but this is what they sell...indestructible motorcycle engine.). To be honest sound is the best thing on harley... Rest is not worth it because after paying an insane ammount to new model then you have to pay maintenance and accessories terrible expensive too... I have to say also that rebel is much lighter than the sportgide and ligther than the softail standard ( cc are not the same), but Rebel bike looks like a toy, small and weak don't know how to say it, it's just a feeling. I love harley with their big engines and badboy bikes like SOA but they are rapidly losing followers, because people can't pay that huge amount of money to have new bike, and second hand is even worse here... super expensive for a 15 year old bike with 75.000km, so people is moving to other brands.

I did a test drive today and the dealer expected that the bikes will be even more expensive with the 22´er models due to the high shipping and more expensive raw material costs. Even if I wanted to buy a 21´er Street Bob right now he couldn´t deliver any new bike because they are all sold out (his contingent is empty). I think this is the new HD strategy with Zeitz: sell less but with higher prices and he seems to turn HD in a kind of a luxury brand (ok, HD has always been expensive, at least here in Europe at least for what you get) . So I wouldn´t expect lower prices. Right now, they sell like hot cakes.

Why so expensive? What exactly justifies the price. The outdated slow motor? The 700 lbs weight? The single disc up front? The lack of any modern tech?

US components and labor would be by far the biggest factor if you were to break it down by category. Gotta think anything made in USA is going to cost at least a 30-40% premium over anything coming from east Asia then you have to factor in overhead costs. A lack of US style labor laws in countries of origin or countries where components are outsourced from on most if not all metric bikes also adds another huge premium. A made in USA bike built by American union workers is just going to cost more. This is just an average breakdown and not including things like CVO packages ECT....

@@akafox91 do you have a good source for how many HD parts are actually made in the US? Most sites I find say parts are made in Europe and Asia, but everything is imported and assembled in the 3 main HD plants in the US. Either way it adds cost, but I'd be interested to see reliable numbers of you have them. Edit: I'd also add that many sporty/adventure bikes have more tech in them, but are much lighter and have more plastics. Tech itself isn't that expensive past R&D, and the big 4 sell so many bikes worldwide they can afford that stuff easily. HD doesn't have tech, but large amounts of metal and chrome cost money no matter how old it is lol. Plus cruiser riders probably keep their bikes longer so HD tries to get more up front. Big 4 uses sport bike profits to keep their cruisers cheaper I'd bet. And can't forget that HD charges for the brand, and since most buyers are older they can afford it more than younger big 4 buyers.

@@MrPAULONEAL that is false & easy to disprove. If a single brake was as effective as a dual brake then why have dual brakes. Nice BS....

Yammie, I test rode my first cruiser (HD Fat Bob) 3 weeks ago and I have to agree with how you described the HD's reluctance to enter a curve. Reminded me of the inflatable clown punching bag I had when I was a kid. It had sand in the bottom and when you push it over it wants to pop back up. I don't have any other cruiser experience to fall back on (I've been on a 2012 Super Tenere for a long time). Is the Rebel more willing to cooperate?

I also did a test drive on the Fat Bob and the Sport Glide (and SB and Slim :-) ). From all the Softails I´ve ridden the Fat Bob was the most difficult in the curves for me. The Sport Glide was very nimble comparing to the Fat Bob. I suppose this has to do with the fat bob's fat front tires. The Sport Glide was the most comfortable Bike for me. However, I will buy a BMW R1250R - made everything better and is technically light years ahead (ok, doesn´t look as cool but look is not everything).
