Straight fluorocarbon or mono has its drawbacks as well Randy. Nobody wants to babysit their $20-$60 a spool fluorocarbon line from getting coils, wind knots, …. or deal with less casting distance, knicks, scrapes, and it doesn’t last as long as braid. Braid tangles far less, it’s far stronger and more sensitive, and it lasts years if taken care of and you don’t snag up or lose several yards of line for whatever reason. Fluorocarbon is way too expensive to spool up straight with, and every tangle is losing $$$$ , which there will be many tangles no matter if you spool up soaking the spool of line in hot water, or constantly maintain your line …….. I truly don’t believe braid is costing anyone bites with 15-20ft leaders. I fish WI lakes so clear they’re literally as clear as tap water, and I catch as many fish as anyone who is doing well, and big fish as well. Nobody I know using braid is struggling , whether the water is muddy or clear. I agree tying knots is time consuming Fluorocarbon to braid, or that mono is better for Topwater or close combat fishing cause of stretch. But it’s simply not true and holds no water that braid to fluorocarbon is costing anyone bites . Time of day/night, presentation, location is a bigger factor than fishing line itself. I’m not saying that thinner fluorocarbon leaders or lines don’t help in clearer water, but if a braided line is tied to a 20+ ft leader, the bass aren’t paying attention to anything but the bait itself. There’s boats, swimmers, ducks and wildlife, wind, clouds and sun, they’re not focusing on that 10lb test/ 2lb diameter line 20+ feet from them. Maybe I am wrong, but I catch enough trophy fish of all species in clear water here in WI using braid to fluorocarbon, and I have 90% less tangles than the guys using mono or fluorocarbon straight. I agree with everything you say in this video accept the braid-fluoro theory. Back off on your drag, tie the right knots, work the bait properly, don’t set the hook like PopEye …. you get bit and land fish! All there is to it! I don’t see any issues day or night fishing clear water with braid to fluorocarbon, although I use mono for certain presentations. But straight fluorocarbon is a expensive tangled nightmare waiting to happen! I guarantee that to anyone who ventures down that road! Braid is so sensitive you feel every bite, stick, rock, mud, gravel, leaf, piece of garbage, ….. it lasts years on your reel, tangles less, it’s the strongest line on the market, and learning to use braid is gonna help a lot of people land more fish, save more money, and enjoy their time on the water. There’s a reason so many pros and fisherman in general use braid. I fish walleyes, pike, musky, salmon, bass, panfish, trout, catfish, dogfish, carp, and there’s definitely a time and place for braid and mono. But straight fluorocarbon is a nightmare! Especially if you’re telling new comers to fishing to go straight fluorocarbon. The line is way to expensive to get wind knots, coils, and it doesn’t last very long in general . This is just my 2 cents worth. I haven’t fished 50 years, but I fished 34 years in some of the clearest waters in North America (Wisconsin/Lake Michigan had some ultra clear water) ……. You use common sense and don’t overpower the fluorocarbon leader. I find that 8lb braid is good for 4-10lb fluorocarbon leaders, 10 braid is good for 6-15lb fluorocarbon , 15-40lb braid works with 10-30 fluorocarbon……. For Muskies 80-100lb braid is good for 80-130lb fluorocarbon leaders. But back off on the drag, don’t overpower the leader, learn the right knot (Back to Back Uni Knot works well to connect Fluoro to braid)……. Great videos by the way, I enjoy watching your page and just wanted to give another perspective to the fishing line theories and game. I run a KZbin page Weckerle Outdoors , a multi species page. But 75% of my fish are caught braid to fluorocarbon, the other 25% straight mono under certain circumstances like extremely cold weather, panfishing, trout fishing……. Otherwise it’s braid to fluorocarbon! I catch everything from 20-35lb King Salmon to 8-10lb Walleyes, Muskies, Catfish, Bass, and some big fish. I don’t see how braid has hurt my success or fishing , I only see how it enhanced it since I started using braid 25 years ago. I use straight mono on my Ultralight rods for panfish, or for Lake Michigan river trout /salmon, or for Topwater, or just on baitcasters in general. But again, I mainly use braid if I’m throwing spinning rods and reels. I only use braid on baitcasters when using my heavy flipping sticks , musky rods, pike rods, …… or else I like mono more for baitcasting gear. I use Seaguar fluorocarbon leaders with Power Pro braid 75-80% of the time when I’m fishing, whether it’s jigs, Jerkbaits, crankbaits, livebait rigs, I have no issue getting bites or having problems of any type. I don’t have issues with braid whether tying knots (back to back Uni knots), or pre-tying leaders to small swivels to switch leaders out fast. Fish bite, the vet caught, tangles rarely occur, the braid lasts forever, I get more snagged lures back, land big fish regularly. Clear water, muddy water…… doesn’t matter! Again just my 2 cents! Good luck fishing Randy, and keep up the good work on your KZbin page. Checkout Weckerle Outdoors if you get some time! 😊

I'm days away from launching my new website dedicated to Fishing Line Test Reports. I have built the most sophisticated fishing line test machine. The Results I am seeing so far are pretty eye opening. Some mono lines are more sensitive than Flourocarbon. One name brand line is testing much lower strength than advertised. Some "Flourocarbon" lines are showing stress/strain curves that look like mono. I hope people really like the Fishing Line test reports I will be publishing. They will be free and you can even download the raw data.

I believe there are several advantages for using braid to fluorocarbon. One: cost. Two: sensitivity. I have nice gear, but not ultra top of the line. Braid adds sensitivity, and can enhance the ability to detect a bite. Three: casting distance. Have I broken connection knots? Yes. Last year I fished about 160 days and broke 4 knots. The year before didn’t break any. The savings on not having to replace fluorocarbon line? 16 rods, you can do the math. Also, from an environmental standpoint, tossing miles of plastic fishing line because it’s full of memory makes me I’ll, especially as my braided mainline lasts years. I’ll never go to purely straight fluorocarbon for the environmental waste alone.

@@robertwilliamson6958 I've discovered through the years that I'm more apt to set too soon, ripping the bait from the fish before it's fully in its mouth. I use the mantra, "there's one" to give me a half second between feeling the bite and setting the hook, depending on technique. I also fish smallies, which are generally more aggressive, so it's harder to miss a bite to begin with. :)

Fishing line is one area where Briton Florida makes things simple. I only fish 2 trophy fisheries and there are no docks, riprap, lay downs, depth ledges or even brush piles. Just hydrilla, water lettuce, reeds and some submerged trees. Basically if you’re not fishing in, around or on top of vegetation you won’t catch many fish. Particularly the 6+ lbers which fill these places. Therefore I fish mostly braid with a couple of 14lb fluoro outfits for things like rat-l-traps. Frogs, top water, big swim baits, punching, jigs and speed worms is all I usually fish. Finesse fishing where I go is nothing but a recipe for fish stories at the dock. The tannic water color means you can fish braid almost all the time.

One of the things I find superior about straight fluoro instead of braid to leader is slack line sensitivity. It seems to me that I simply feel more bites with straight fluoro. I think it's due to the density and relative stiffness of the fluoro. Sure, if there isn't any slack, braid transmits what’s happening incredibly well, but not so much when a fish hits a bait on the fall with a semi-slack line, or when you're shaking a dropshot. Does this match anyone else’s experience?

This is actual educational content. I grew up fishing mono in the 80s and I’m glad I know you can actually catch a fish on it. If you watch stuff these days you’d think you shouldn’t even go to the lake if you have mono spooled up. And I agree on the 65 pound braid. I’ll see a guy in KZbin or TV fishing what I wouldn’t necessarily even call heavy cover. Like maybe bushes or lay downs and he’ll make it sound like if you don’t have 65 pound braid you won’t even land the fish. I used to fish that stuff with 14lb mono when I was a kid

If your talking about spooling to change test or mono vs floro is probably mistaken. Many carry extra spools or even reels as I do. If I have a malfunction I just cut off the lure swap the reel tie back on and go back to fishing. Yet for some, I know they will strip and refill on the fly. It's a waste of tournament time in my book.

I was not using straight floro on my reels either unless it was a baitcaster. But do you prefer the invisx over tatsu on a spinning reel? If so why?

I'm just a bank fisherman and 5 rods are usually enough, not including my kid's. I have 2 ultra lights with 4lb, and a medium running 8lb Sufix Advanced mono; this is by far the most amazing mono I've ever used in my life, and I run 6lb on my kid's rods. I don't ever need to go super deep because it will just get snagged. I run a medium heavy with 20lb braid, and another with 10-12lb fluorocarbon if I need it. I usually just take first 3. I have 2 spare chonky noodle rods with 30lb braid for heavy river fishing with dirty water if I'm going for catfish or carp but they're usually left at home. I'd be willing to bet having just one rod with fluoro would suffice for the vast majority of casual bank anglers so cost shouldn't really enter into the equation. I refuse to spend my fishing time retying leaders, it's bad enough having to constantly tie things for my kids lol.

Not advocating for one over the other but a few points that may be relevant to the Intuitive Posse: Mono absorbs water over time (lessens line strength) and is affected by exposure to ultraviolet light (coil memory on old line). Berkley suggest it loses 20% of it's strength after 100 hrs of exposure (that's kind of irrelevant). Least expensive, good for it must be changed to keep fresh. Fluorocarbon: made from different plastic :), doesn't absorb water and not effected by UV. (those line changers may want to stop thinking like it's mono, it's pricey). Refractory value ( closer to water) Mono and Flouro have about the same stretch but the strain cure is different. Flouro is stiff comparatively speaking (old timers might remember Big game vs XL mono on a spinngin reel). Significantly more expensive but should provide many more hours (days, weeks, months) of use. Your mileage may vary. It all boils down to perceived value. Don't get caught up believing whats shown in commercial advertising. All the best.

@@nateriley4067 Making up numbers but for illustration purposes. 10# test for both. Mono may start stretching at 2# of weight (maybe less or more). as the weight is increased the mono stretches roughly 30% before ultimate failure, breaking. What do they think the 20lb braid is doing? Unless I'm a complete idiot the 6lb leader is still the weakest link and with the knot, it may not even be a 6lb rating on strength.

I've never had an issue with connection knots breaking lower than the leader test. Early on I had issues with them coming undone but I've learned to beef up my connection knot and now I rarely have to tie more than 1 leader a day. I personally use braid to leader on spinning outfits because it casts like a dream and I have less problems with line twist/issues common with mono/fluorocarbon on said outfits. Plus I'm a line watcher, it's easier to see a bright fluorescent braid, at least for my eyes.
