Ordered a set of aluminum 1090 discs for my knockoff set. Had to do some modifications to get them to work (probably lack of manufacturing consistency with the knockoffs), but they work wonderfully! But the real story was dealing with Joe. When they first didn't fit I emailed him and received a response almost immediately full of information on steps to take, but most surprising, he offered to do a video chat to help me out if needed!! That's customer service you just don't see anymore and if you are on the fence to get them, get them!! Joe will do everything he can to make sure they work for you!!

Last time I checked in was Gen1. Amazing developments with the high quality casting and now universal compatibility. So happy to see you'll be selling individual discs, I hope it really takes off for you.

Thanks H. Thanks for checking back in! Getting there one step at a time. I even managed to sneak in some new knurled grips for Powerblocks since I had been meaning to do that to mine for years now. You can see those over at knurledgrips.com. I've been away from making videos for several weeks while I make sure all of the new product manufacturing and shipping stays on track. But I do have a couple new videos in the works and coming out over the course of the next week, including a sneak peek at my design concept to turn the 1090 into a 120-130lb dumbbell. and the 552 Series 2 into an 75-90lb dumbbell. Hey, Joe on your "Knockoff/Fake/Copy versus OEM Bowflex" video you mentioned that it is the same internals as the OEM Bowflex. Just trying to broaden your market here but you should make a video showing that this Average Joe Kits is compatible with some Bowflex clones in the market (IMFIT, OGODU, etc,...). As someone who is looking into expanding a beginner home gym I would rather purchase offbrand Bowflex and purchase your internals for futureproofing my homegym. Looking forward to that video. Big fan. You're the Louis Rossman of adjustable Bowflex. Big Ups.

Hey hey Kenneth. Man oh man, thank you thank you. Louis...he's the man. I share his sentiment about our right to repair as customers. Tech industry, automotive industry, agriculture, the list goes on. They're all the same when it comes to trying to restrict our right to repair/modify the products that we buy. As far as knockoffs, most seem to originate from the same small handful of manufacturers. I believe most if not all of them were named in Bowflex's lawsuit last summer. So long as you buy a certain minimum quantity from them, they'll throw any logo you want on it. Typically, that minimum is several hundred pairs. That's how dozens of brands we've never heard of popped up on sites like Amazon selling everything from Bowflex knockoffs to phone charging cables under virtually unknown names. I wouldn't call them "brands" in the traditional sense. These are just resellers pumping out "brand" names like candy and slapping those names on product that they source overseas from the same manufacturers as their competition. Behind the scenes, they could switch manufacturers to save a few bucks, and we'd never know it unless the new supplier's parts aren't quite the same as their previous supplier. There's always the potential for knockoff manufacturers to produce slight variations of the dumbbell. Even Bowflex appears to suffer from a manufacturing consistency issue within its own supply chain. I own several pairs of OEM and knockoff 552 and 1090 dumbbells. And a couple will not perfectly fit all the other OEM and knockoff dumbbells. All of this to say, so far my kits have fit about 95-ish+% of OEM and knockoffs straight out of the box, no matter the logo on the dumbbell. Even now, with my 3rd and final generation of the disc design, I've not been able to improve on that (just achieving it back in 2020 was a challenge in itself). The remaining few percent require varying degrees of tweaking for a better fit. Keep in mind, I only have a few thousand customers--a tiny fraction of a fraction of a percent--of the many owners out there. So it remains to be seen if I'll maintain that level of out-of-the-box compatibility as more owners try my discs. Never a dull moment, man. I definitely won't turn down the opportunity to try the discs on other knockoffs in the future, and if I do I'll let you all know about it. I'm always curious to find out how each one fits. But keep in minf this is already happening naturally as I ship my discs around the world to customers who own knockoffs from local resellers in their countries. Cheers, Joe

Do the kits fit all models of the 1090

Hi, Stephen. Yes, there is only one model of 1090 available in lbs and kgs. The design has changed slightly over the past decade, but unlike the 552 Series 1 revamped and reintroduced as the Series 2, I am not aware of Bowflex formally introducing the 1090 changes as a new version/model/series. My Disc Fix Kits fit 95+% of OEM and knockoff SelectTechs straight out of the box. A few percent typically require minor tweaking for a better fit. And fewer than one percent require more extensive tweaking to improve the fit. More information is available up on www.averagejoeinnovations.com/ in the FAQ section.

Great question, Kevan, and something I should have remembered to mention in the video. Here's how they compare (rounded to the nearest ounce): OEM 552 6oz (177g) OEM 1090 8oz (231g) AJI 552 and 1090 17oz (475g) Effectively, a 1090 dumbbell will gain about 1lb 2oz and a 552 dumbbell will gain about 1lb 6oz. The final total weight of your handles depends on your specific dumbbells since neither OEM nor knockoffs have consistent weight from one pair to the next. Thanks to OEM/knockoff manufacturing differences, I have customers whose dumbbells differ from the advertised weight by a few ounces to more than a pound. One customer has knockoff 1090s that weigh in around 8lbs empty. Crazy, I know.
