As a YJ owner, Doug messed up some stuff here, though I think he did a great job explaining what it feels like to drive. They are actually "peppier" than you'd expect with the 4.0L thanks to a respectable 225 lb-ft of torque, which isn't half bad on a ~3000lb vehicle. 1. The AC-equipped Wranglers did have front vents, but most didn't have the AC option. However, if you drive one in the cold, you quickly realize the YJs have an absolute blast furnace of a heater, and you'll be very toasty in no time. I actually had to crack the windows a bit in a snowstorm as it was getting so warm inside. You also sit very close to the windshield, so you can feel the defrost vent under the windshield. You really don't need dash vents to be comfortable. 2. They might have updated the horn in later years. My 1995 has a Hella-style snail horn, and it's plenty loud, with a “commanding” tone. 3. I think that Jeep was missing a bunch of interior carpet. The should have been carpet all around the rear fenders, under the rear bench, and under the door sills. Yes, the YJs are very basic, but that one looks a lot more bare than mine. 4. As other people have said, that "blank gauge" is an indicator for when the Jeep is in 4WD. Early YJs had an analog clock in that spot and a 4x4 indicator in the dash. In later years, the stereo had a digital clock, so they deleted the analog clock and moved the 4x4 indicator to the now-empty gauge pod. Probably just a cost saving thing. 5. He should have gotten into the back seat on the passenger side. The entire passenger seat frame swings forward and makes getting to the back a piece of cake. Since it's the frame that moves, none of the passenger seat adjustments are changed. On later years, the seats changed from the dial tilt to a lever tilt, and on my YJ Sahara, the driver's seat has a latch on the back that instantly tilts the seat back forward for getting into the back on that side if you really need to. It looks like the older years can't do that though.

I had a 1990 4- banger, then a 1993 sport straight 6. I was yelling at my screen as the review was going on! - directly behind the button for the door buzzer you can see the wire connection to the switch. Disconnect the wire there...shazam! No buzzer and no foot lights. Why? To remove the doors! Just unscrew one screw on the bottom hinge, pull upon door. Both my YJs had the half doors and zipper windows. Loved them! Also, both my YJs had carpet over the metal shifter plates.

The blank gauge in my old one was a clock. Now I'm wondering if that was put in as aftermarket.
@isaacfortner
@isaacfortner 4 жыл бұрын
@@ktwhite46 No, the earlier YJs had a clock. Later YJs had a digital clock in the stereo deck, so they moved the 4x4 indicator from the steering column light to that gauge location you can see in the video. My 1995 is the exact same way.

The "blank gauge" is actually where the "4WD" indicator lights up when you are in 4WD. And the buzzer is easy to fix by disconnecting the switch. Source: former YJ owner.

@RenchRanch
@RenchRanch 6 жыл бұрын
The passenger seat is articulated on these old Wranglers so that it lifts forward allowing access to the back. The drivers seat doesn't. It would have been far easier to get in from the passenger side. Also on the other trim levels of Wrangler there is a bracket that prevents the rear spare tire from hitting the tail light. On the Renegade the company that converted the Jeep left the bracket off as it would interfere with the "fender flares". Just some FYI.

Jeep still recommends passengers get into the rear of the JK through the passengers seat. It articulates forward more than the drivers seat does because it doesn't have to clear the steering wheel.

I internal cried for a few reasons after watching this video. As long as I can remember my dad has always bought a Jeep. He refuses to buy anything but it. The first Jeep my dad ever bought was a ‘95 Jeep Wrangler rio grande edition. As far as exterior design, it didn’t exactly look like the renegade but the interior looks almost identical (but we had special seats that came in a neon jungle scratch design). Just by watching this I can smell the interior and feel the small ‘90s seats wrapped around me. Hearing the buzz of the door open warning sent a wave of flash backs from when I was little. I can just feel turning the ‘90s knobs on the old style radio, listening to a bad quality early 2000s song. All the dials and the look of the center consol made me extremely nostalgic. I know no ones gonna see this but I just thought I would share this.

I can only imagine the amount of research and scripting that goes into these videos. The videos are basic but the commentary is by far the highlight of Doug's reviews. Always has me coming back
@brianstraight9308
@brianstraight9308 6 жыл бұрын
There's plenty of times Doug will mis-speak some aspect of a vehicle, miss some piece of history, or some other obvious thing so I doubt much "research" goes into it beyond some Google searches except for the cases of really special, exotic, cars or the owner of a rare/exotic car being particularly knowledgeable. Much of the time some of the things Doug says to "explain" aspects I take with a grain of salt if it sounds dubious to me and I do my own research. Most annoying to me is when he says things like, "no idea what this blank switch does" or "most people wouldn't know about this part of the vehicle" when anyone vehicle owner worth his salt reads through the owners manual and usually answers to questions like, "what switch is supposed to be here?" can be answered by looking in the owner's manual section on options this particular vehicle doesn't have. But, overall, yeah, the videos are basic. Doug, most often to me, feels like the Cliff Claven of car commentary, this guy seems to know a lot, likes to talk, and some of the things he says sounds dubious but is still entertaining and fun to listen to. That what keeps me coming back, Doug just seems like a fun guy that loves talking about cars and "reviewing" them.
@VehicleVirals
@VehicleVirals 6 жыл бұрын
Brian Straight I don't go as far as saying that everything he says is 100% spot on. It's obvious that he does do a fair amount of research regardless of what you think. I myself create videos within the automotive field and know how time goes into not only researching and retaining the information but also presenting it in a entertaining way. And as far as scripting the video, he does it in a way that its educational and funny at the same time. Sometimes that can be challenging especially considering the length of all his videos. Anyways that's just my thoughts. You're free to have your own opinion
@brianstraight9308
@brianstraight9308 6 жыл бұрын
NP. I was just being.... "comedically glib" as there's been a few times Doug has said dubious and incorrect things that even I know the answers to, as a 'non-car guy" or easily found the answers to Online. I'm sure he does do a lot of research and, well, there's a lot of conflicting information out there, it's easy to miss things, etc. But, regardless, he *is* able to do these videos in an entertaining way to come off as friendly and enjoyable to watch. He very much feels like a "car nerd" and you're seeing him geek out over something as silly as a 1990's Wrangler. It's fun. But generally with almost anything I see/hear/read on-line I take any "facts" with some grain of salt.

Doug, I had a Renegade that i purchased brand new. This example is not an authentic Jeep Renegade. Three things that stand out immediately are the missing front and rear skid plates, full carpeting and trail cloth fabric seats. Its a kit someone put on a regular YJ model. Also, the driver's seat didn't have a knob you'd turn to let someone in the back. There was a paddle style lever to adjust the seat. Otherwise, this is a great review.

I thought it was weird that this thing was missing some options like air conditioning, full carpet, clock, nicer cloth seats, speakers in the roll bar, etc. I'm not an expert on Jeeps though, so maybe back then you could order the Renegade package without being forced into those options. On all the newer models though if you got the top of the line Sahara or Rubicon, it came standard with almost all the options.

That is not completely original. The Renegade seats were cloth and not vinyl like that one. The passenger seat would tumble upwards to allow passenger entry to the rear. Not the twisting action you had to do here which confirms not original seats. Also that carpet is not original which is why it is not covering the transmisión cover or rear area. It’s also missing the front steering box skid plate. As for the rear tailgate, the original one had a bumpstop next to the tail light which would stop the tailgate. Also, AC was available. In general it’s a great condition vehicle but not original.

I'm bugged by white letter tires in the first place, especially ones with white _outline_ letters like those. They all look gaudy. I always mount them on the wheels with the blackwall side facing out, which looks a lot better. Also, why would I want to advertise for a tire company? White letter tires originated on race cars, where it made sense, because they got sponsored by tire companies.

This was an enjoyable walk down memory lane for me. I bought a 1994 Wrangler new and drove it every day for 21 years. I will point out a few corrections (I know you love it when we do this, Doug).... The Renegade package included the fender flares, but the 4.0 liter would have come from the factory, not installed by the aftermarket guys who screwed on the flares, so $11,000 base price compared with $4,000 premium isn't a perfect comparison. The Renegade package is also something that the Jeep community mostly hates. The $11,000 base model would have had a 2.5 liter four-cylinder. Yes it has only 180 HP, but tons of torque. And the vehicle doesn't weigh very much. The left-most gauge is the 4WD indicator, not blank. But that's not at all obvious until you go into 4WD. Mine did have a prop to stop the rear gate from opening too far and hitting the brake light. I wonder if it was removed to make room for those silly fender flares on the Renegade. Pedals: you showed the parking brake in the "down" (parked) position. When driving it would be much higher and very unlikely to be confused with the clutch. True that all the heat comes out either on the windshield or your feet, but for ventilation, in addition to the old-school-cool side vent windows there's also a climate control lever that opens up a huge vent by the passenger's right calf, and it is wonderful. I really miss having basic, effective ventilation controls on contemporary vehicles. Entering the back seat: the passenger side front seat folds WAY forward making it much easier and quicker to enter the back seen from that side. That annoying buzzer - I found it astonishingly easy to remove the buzzing thing - was just a little plastic box hanging from a wire. It lasted about a week in mine before I figured that out. Keep up the reviews, Doug!

Doug, what you've described here, what makes you feel happy with this Jeep, is exactly what gives all older vehicles a personality; imperfections. Imperfections in cars, is what makes each car unique, and that what makes people love them. Why? When they're flawed like us, we can relate, and as humans we seem to enjoy that trait. Modern cars are very clinical and thus feel soulless, and that's why there just isn't the same passion for them as for older stuff.

DOUG!!! The fender flare, body kit on the renegade was designed for the Jeep 50 year anniversary, and is shared with the Wrangler Anniversary Edition. The two vehicles are identical, even available the same year (50th anniv.) Only difference is the badging. "Renegade" and "Wrangler Anniversary Edition." The Wrangler Renegade trim level continued to sport the fiberglass body kit for three more years, due to the popularity of the anniversary edition, which (obviosly) could not be offered after 1993. This was Chrysler Corporation (not yet owned by Marc Diambler) way of continuing to reap the benefits of the Wranghler Anniversary Editions popularity, after the anniversary had ended. Now you know...

Doug got a bunch wrong on this one, maybe he should have read the huge owners manual. blank gauge = 4x4 indicator lights, the light switch style was common (most gm car / trucks) I remember my jeep had an OEM bracket that stopped the tire from hitting the light. Passenger side seat allows for easy rear access. And the wipers on this jeep dont seem to be going down full .

I used to hate these. I had a Grand Cherokee, and a Cherokee (ZJ, XJ) and had only ridden in a Wrangler once. It was a soft top and during the winter time it felt like I was in a tent going 70 down the freeway. Loud inside, the plastic windows were fogged up. It was rough..... Then I found good deal on one and got it to flip. I only drove it once and I was in love. This one was a hard top. When I put it in reverse and looked over my shoulder, I was essentially looking at the ground right behind me thanks to the short little wheel base. I sold my other Jeeps and the YJ is now my favorite. There is just something about it that needs to be experienced to be fully understood. They're perfect

You shouldn't HAVE TO get in on one specific side of a 2 door vehicle that seats passengers on BOTH sides. He's not "doing it wrong" - he's doing it as a 4th person getting inside a Jeep CJ that already has a front driver, front passenger, and rear passenger in it would, which is more than reasonable. People are acting like he's trying to get into the back sea from the tailgate or something - there's NOTHING unreasonable about climbing into the back seat from the driver's side of a 2 door vehicle. And, frankly, that irritating BS(I've road tripped in loaded cars with vehicles from this era many times) SHOULD be pointed out.

The reason older Jeeps like this were so good was because of their simplicity. I don't know what Jeep is thinking with the new Wranglers. Now it's just another luxury SUV with tons of stuff to break when you try to do some hard off roading. The new Wrangler is better suited to be just another asphalt warrior.

I don't know.... Almost all American cars and trucks with manual transmissions had foot parking brakes until the '90s. If mixing up the two pedals was a real issues foot parking brakes wouldn't have been so common for so long. In practice, I don't see how having the parking brake down there is a real issue. I own a Jeep and a truck now with this arrangement and have never come close to pushing the brake accidentally.
