So, you didn't go to Fixins (downtown), Harold & Belles in the Crenshaw area (Creole food), 10 10 Wine Bar in Inglewood (pastas and such), Status (Jamiacan food) in Hollywood, The Court in Westchester (brunch spot). The District (burgers, pastas, fried broccoli), Pips on La Brea (pastas, fish, chicken), Nile Bar 🍸 (drinks & Bar food), Little Belize in Inglewood, or Giti Thai in Windsor Hills. All black owned. All flavorful. All in L.A.

The clientele should have told you this wasn’t a soul food restaurant. Look at who is in the kitchen. This is LA and we are a diverse community but there must be a black cook somewhere in the kitchen of a soul food restaurant.

If you own a soulful food restaurant, you've got to have really good Nubian American cooks in the kitchen, or "others" who have been trained well by excellent Nubian American chefs. I remember when COVID was still pretty bad. The Chinese cooks quit working at my favorite stir fry restaurant in Los Angeles and were replaced with some Hispanic cooks. It wasn't good. I haven't been back in a while. Hopefully, the Chinese cooks have returned.

I think my biggest question is what was everybody else thinking in the restaurant. It was so loud and festive , you would think it’s the best food EVER. I can’t have a good time at a restaurant if my food ain’t good.

You’re right, I asked after tasting the food…it’s owned by a group of white people from South Carolina. I think one owner is black. The recipes are created by a Caucasian chef from SC.

As a Black L.A. native, I don't eat at Soul Food restaurants - I look at who's the cook and if they aren't Black, I won't eat it. Period. Eat what the demographic is wherever you go. Out here, it's Mexican/Latino - better luck with their cuisines.
