It's called "Day For Night" filming. Another giveaway is the bright sunlight reflections on surfaces and the actors squinting their eyes in the bright sunlight. You don't squint at night! 😂 They use a lot of that in the old westerns.

Hi Rick, As an actor I know a lot of behind the scenes tricks that directors use. But I still love your informative videos, here is something that you might have missed in every outside night shot on Hogans Heroes, you will hear crickets chirping the ironic part is, this show only takes place in winter. Lol no crickets

As a child who grew up watching a lot of television in the 1960's, I loved this show-----but I grew up. I often wondered why some of my uncles shunned this show, but as I got older I learned the reason why. These men had all joined the military shortly after the December 7th attack, and despite their desire to fight Japan, they got sent to Germany instead. Uncle Willard drove a tank and he spent five years overseas and when asked why he didn't watch "Hogan's Heroes", he simply said, "I don't find anything that the Germans did during the time I was there the least bit funny----not funny at all". We never asked him about it again.

Your WWII family members could take solace in the fact that the actors Klemperer (Klink) and Banner (Schultz) were of Jewish extraction, and found the roles as revenge of sorts. Banner actually lost family in the Holocaust. Klemperer agreed to take on the part of Klink only if Klink always looked the fool. Quote: "I had one qualification when I took the job: if they ever wrote a segment whereby Colonel Klink would come out the hero, I would leave the show."

I don’t think German people are stupid, but I think Werner Klemperer’s and John Banner’s characters were human types which are universal. I’ve always felt they humanized the German people while other semi-regular characters were reminders of the menace and the atrocities below the surface. The periodic appearance of the Gestapo officer Colonel Hochstetter was a reminder of the maniacal nature of Nazism.

'Day for night' film effects have been around for decades, and Francois Truffaut even made a movie called DAY FOR NIGHT in 1973. You may have forgotten to mention the most likely reason these day for night shots were done in HOGAN'S HEROES: If they'd waited to shoot till night, the union costs like overtime would have run way beyond the series' budget. They needed to spend their weekdays rehearsing and filming and get it done before they actually ran into overtime. Otherwise, it probably wouldn't have been practical to do the series at all. Thanks for the video!

It’s rather obvious that they filmed during the day. There were plenty of heavy shadows and they could see in the woods usually without flashlights but the biggest clue was the sky was quite blue at night. The real question is why does Klink salute Shultz first in every episode instead of other way around in the opening sequence.

I knew about the use of filters, but never gave a second thought to the shadows. As kids on the farm in the fifties and sixties, bright moonlights always produced vivid shadows, and one of my most memorable Holloweens around 1960 had such a brilliant moon that we could see the wild animals' (mostly deer and racoons) shadows as they scurried away from us. Even last night I took a walk around our pond around 1am without any lights to enjoy the Harvest Moon, and the shadows were beautiful. Of course, filming on the studio lot is much different than my childhood farms or our very rural house in the woods by the pond, so thanks for the video and filming insight.

Actually, filters were not used for night time scenes, the camera lens was just stopped down to reduce lightning coming into the camera. Set lighting was also adjusted accordingly to further enhance the night time appearance. If you look closely at the flashlights the Heros used, most of the time they were fitted with a 60W PAR20 spot lamp because, even the brightest flashlight bulbs available at the time appeared extremely dim on camera due to the F-stop they used for the night time scenes.
@KutWrite
@KutWrite 10 ай бұрын
They rarely stop down the cameras. Why? because that increases the depth of field so that more of the background, which should be blurred, into focus. This technique is called "Day for Night." There was even a movie so titled, about deceptions among people. Hand-held flashlights rarely provide the "spot" you see when the actor points it at something. An off-camera spot is aimed where the light should go. This way, the item being spotted has a known amount of light and won't be over or under-exposed.

I knew about this day for night filming technique before but the way you discussed it in the video today, was very clear and even more interesting to hear. Great job! And I did notice in a few of the day for night still photos you used, one could still see the puffy white clouds in the sky. Obviously these clouds aren’t that visibly puffy white at night. So that would also be a clue to the film technique used. And YES! More behind the scenes videos on filming techniques, scripts, props, etc. I watch every aspect of a show, and every thing that goes into the show as a whole, to me, is so fascinating, each with a story of its own.

Great topic, Rick! I first saw this trick back in the 80s when I hung out with a filmmaker friend and ever since, I've always looked for it in old shows - like you said, keeping an eye on the shadows. Andy Griffith's "night" scenes employed this trick often. On an unrelated note, have you ever considered adding the show Taxi to your arsenal? That's my favorite show of all time!

We knew that they shot most night scenes during the day back then. It was obvious. We figured they just irised down the lens to darken the shadows. They also shot night scenes in the studio. Shooting in the studio was more convenient because then they could have more control over the lighting, sound, etc.

2:35 - Also, the truck's headlights are on, but are barely visible. Incidentally, the main reason "night scenes" had to be shot during the day was because cameras of the period were not good in low-light conditions. Film stock was expensive, so you couldn't really shoot, reshoot, reshoot, reshoot until you got the lighting dark enough to look "nighttime," but light enough for the cam to detect. The "filter" was used during the 50s in B&W westerns, and was carried over into color telly. It was used in some western films, but most major theatrical films like _The Great Escape_ shot their night scenes at night.

When I was a kid I used to pretend I had a monocle using a checker or something similar. It's actually not hard at all to keep it in without a struggle. If the item is a "little bit" bigger in diameter so that you sort of have to pick up your brow or pull down your cheek to place it, then it will stay there til doomsday and not fall out. Nowadays I use those jeweler's loupes for working on my electronics (the ol' eyesight isn't what it used to be) so I guess all that silly boyhood playing around taught me something valuable lol.

There's a difference between the way local light shines on objects versus sunlight. With a spotlight or close light, the shadow angles change dramatically, while distant light from the sun shows no visibly discernable change in shadow angles with subject movement. Moonlight is harder to discern from filtered sunlight than from close lights. I'm sure there must be subtle cues I'm unaware of.

There's a specific production term for it and it should appear in the script; its called Shoot Day for Night.

A full moon casts sharp shadows but daytime shots with filters is the way to go. I don't think the directors would wait for cloudless full moons.

loved the show. My friend Tony and I would see the German military equipment and critique how inaccurate they could be. We were big into scale models.

I have all six seasons on DVD. I used to watch it with Grandmother. I always think of Her when I watch it.

Gotta add...Truffaut made an entire movie called "Day For Night" about the art of filmmaking and the fantasy and the practical methods that achieved this. (Maybe it was Fellini, but I'm pretty sure it was Truffaut. If you don't know who he is, think of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" where he played the French UFO expert that questioned Richard Dreyfuss about his dreams.)

This was common for all TV shows in the 60s and 70s, not just Hogans Heroes.

Different series; same effect: I took a shortcut drive through an old winery area near Ontario Airport in California in the early 1970s. A crew from Hollywood was shooting a location sequence for the "Mannix" B/W TV series in the adjacent vineyard. I stopped and walked over. They had large (out-of-focus) dark nets set well behind the actors to darken the background areas, bright front lights to "moonlight" the foreground actors, and had substituted airplane landing lights in place of standard vehicle headlights for a realistic look in the deliberately underexposed footage. Good series; well photographed and directed with plenty of location shoots....

A variation of this application goes back to the very early days of film, circa 1900. Back then , the film stock required a lot of light, so night scenes had to be shot in the day or in a well lit studio. To make a scene appear like it was night, the film stock was tinted blue, resulting in a black and blue image. While this practice was effective in conveying that it was meant to be a night scene, it suffered the same drawback of heavy shadows.

In the scene used for an example (2:57-3:14), Schulz is holding 2 balloons. Did anybody notice the sun is still showing it's reflection almost perfectly especially after the darkening filter was applied?
when the music is so good you forget to stop filming
