Here's How I Fixed my Volvo 740 ABS Light...

I finally fix the ABS light on my Volvo 740, after testing the sensors and checking resistance, it turned out to be a hidden fuse all along, but then after some test emergency stops I experience severe brake failure...

People who complain about scotch locks are the people that don't know or use them, either on the wrong type wire or if they are fitted poorly or where water can get at them, they are like any other type of connector, they are designed for there own certain things, let's face it how long has that scotch lock been in your volvo? Has it ever let you down yet? No because you have used it in the right place an fitted it properly! Like all things in life it won't work if your using it incorrectly!
@Involvod

That's a good point, this scotch lock was already fitted when I bought the car, but when I replaced the fuel sender I refitted it because it worked 😄 I don't see a big problem with them to be honest

I know how you feel when the fuse fixed the ABS. For over a year the gearbox on my 940 would drop out of fourth down to third and stay there. Recently a wise Volvo mechanic said it was probably the overdrive relay. I bought one for 80 bucks. Plugged it in, gearbox works fine, I was so pleased. The old one did not have any apparent damage. It's a great feeling when the old Volvo starts working again like it should.

I had the same issue with my 240, had driven it for years with the abs light on. I thought that a battery issue I had, had killed the abs pump or something. So I didn’t might looking at it. My fuse wasn’t broken put after putting a fresh one in, it had fixed the problem. Then the wire on the axle broke and no speedometer and no abs again haha.

The old Volvos are Masterpieces and the Red Block lasts forever, If regular oil Change is done. They are nearly perfect and easy to Work on. The Problems with the Instrument- Cluster is well known and If they Had Just wired the Instruments instead of using that plastic foil, there will be No Problems att all. Nearly perfect....anyway, this is such a Solid and reliable Car, you can't find this quality today

Mastercylinder or external leak
@mathuetax

Ahh, brake test time and the master cylinder fails. (or maybe it was a brake hose) Coincidental but still frightening/annoying. I have replaced masters on EVERY Volvo I've owned as one circuit will fail. Currently, my 1970 appears to be going down that road and I'll likely need to switch it out within the next few months. It doesn't feel quite as strong as I'd expect on hard stops. Oddly it doesn't seem to matter if it is Girling or ATE. Whatever the specification Volvo had these companies build them to isn't the most robust long term. Dunno why that should be since it isn't like the master design wasn't used by other manufacturers, you'll find visually similar/identical ATE and Girling masters on SAAB, BMW, AUDI, NSU, etcetera of my cars era. Since the 740 borrowed mechanically a lot from the 240 (and the 240 from the 140) it is little wonder it comes with that model lines idiosyncrasies. That's why it is a triangulated system though, a failure probably won't put you in the ditch. Plus you still have the emergency hand brake. BTW, if you've not done so, try a few gentle and then aggressive practice stops with just the handbrake to get an idea as to how it behaves when used to stop the car at speed. For drums, they work ok though they take way longer to retard to a stop as one might imagine.

Probably the brake master cylinder that failed when it got higher pressure than usual from you trying to lock the brakes. And the speedo problem, if you have a 3 pin speedo you should try to find a yazaki cluster from 87-88. They usually work, even the fuelgauge

On a lot of those older Volvos with electronic speedometers, it's often shoddy wiring down to the speedometer sensor on the differential. Sometimes, the sensor fails, too.

I remember mine having a warm start problem when I first got it. It would flood itself and the only way to get it started was to remove the plugs and crank it dry. It did it one night in the pissing rain and while trying to start it I noticed a load of sparking around the dizzy cap … it was tracking all over the place. Once replaced it was much better until the fuel regulator startedleaking fuel into the manifold . Have a look at it running in the dark for jumping sparks
