Regular maintenance is the key. I have a 2010 Honda Insight which I bought new. It now has 180,000 miles on it. I change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles , the oil every 6000 miles , the coolant every 3 years or so and the brake fluid every 3 years and the only problems the car has ever had is a tire pressure monitor sensor going bad and a fuse for the air conditioner blowing. Can’t get much better than that.

I've watched so many car repair videos like Scotty's, and number one thing I've learned throughout the years is, your vehicle is one of your most important resources in life. I'm more than ever in keeping a vehicle maintained, reliable, ready to go, and never trying to put off needed maintenance for too long. Those are great cars , 2010 not have the problematic dual-dry-clutch automatic. And you have the Duratec engine with metal timing chain , no VVT and you have port injection like mine. My 2002 Manual still runs great.

I changed the gas cap on my wife's 2000 Taurus wagon and the check engine light went out immediately. It had been lit for over a year. If you had an emissions inspection coming up, you might try a little Vaseline around the gas cap gasket; that might do it. --Old Guy

Just make the wrenches and sockets are the best fit on the bolts break the bolts with wrenches break everything free first then take the bolts off so they don't fight you always KZbin it first so you have some sort of an idea what to do it's not easy but it is very rewarding good luck

Hey Scotty!! I had a 2018 Honda Civic with the 1.5 L turbo. Within 1000 miles, the oil was dirty and it would be above the full line on the dipstick. I watched your videos on that subject. So I recently traded it in on a 2022 Honda Civic with the 2.0 L naturally aspirated engine. Oil looked brand new after the first thousand miles and it was right where it needed to be on the dipstick. I bought a Chevy pickup years ago, I put 500 miles on it, then changed the break-in oil, which they did recommend. I changed the oil myself aprox. Every 5,000 miles. Put over 300,000 miles on it the engine still runs. I would definitely change the oil if you haven't already. Get rid of the break-in oil.

You could’ve just switched to 0w-16 oil and it would have most likely fixed the oil dilution as Scotty has shown in pervious videos, but the 2.0l is a good choice either way

I use the synthetic oil 5W30 from Costco. I don't go for fancy oil like Royal Purple because it's way too expensive and I know it's high performance and better than the one I use but it costs up to three times and I'm pretty sure it's not three times better. So I stick with the Costco synthetic oil and a bosh filter for synthetic oil every 4-5k miles. I also clean the throttle body which it's pretty easy, spray MAF sensor and replace air filter if needed. Thanks to Scotty, I do all of this myself not to save money but to make sure it gets the oil and parts I want and to make sure it's well done. I don't trust shops anymore.

They don't want them to last no money in it. I've been a fleet mechanic on semis for 10 years now. We had a volvo d12 engine with 2.2 million miles. Head was never removed. Injectors and turbo was the only major repairs. No reason why a car shouldn't be able to go a million miles without a rebuild. We have the technology to do it.

@@hunterpinson807 that's miraculous, VW's of that vintage tend to have timing chain failure way before 300k miles, the parts are cheap plastic. He must have gotten a good one, maintenance is actually why Toyotas are considered so much more reliable than other cars. Toyota owners tend to be fanatical about maintenance where as most VW's are abused and even VW's maintenance requirements are suspect with 12k oil changes, etc

330,000 miles now... in the next couple months Bugous is getting new valve stem seals, a fresh head gasket and a good looking over of its guts.. doesn’t matter if it’s a vw or a Toyota (I had an 85 celica gts) or a garbage fiat (lol) if you are handy with tools and know how to read, you can make any car last.. just take care of it.. clean it, change oil, listen when it ticks or thumps and don’t ignore it..

In the northeast rust is the #1 car destroyer. An annual coating of Woolswax and/or Fluidfilm will stop the rust. I use the thicker Woolswax underneath & the thinner Fluidfilm inside the body panels.

Torque wrench 🔧 is best BUT most v6 engines you can’t use it on rear plugs! Old school “feel” & experience when torquing plugs is necessary. Us old guys can feel when spark plug washer us compressed.

I had a '94 Ranger pickup. Went through 3 teenage boys, bought it from my neighbor with 99,600 miles, sold it with313,000 plus miles. Replaced starter, alternator, u joints, and the water pump just before I sold it to my son for his business. He sold it to one of his employees a couple of years later. It was still running when the employee moved to another state. It's amazing how long an automobile will last when you take care of it. Oh, by the way, my 2000 Freightliner is still going. Replaced one rearend this week, not bad considering it ran 2,142,000 plus miles and will be going back to work on Monday.

I believe 300,000 miles is possible on just about any decent car brand with routine maintenance and what I call " fluid watch" to catch any fluid leaks or low conditions quickly: air pressure, oil, tranny fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, etc. Basic knowledge of this is a must for any young driver especially.

Gross EVAP leaks can also be caused by a faulty EVAP Canister Purge Valve (common with Fords). They get stuck open and allow tank pressure to vent which will set the gross leak code. Replaced a lot of those over the years.

Use a Turkey Bastet with clear hose extension. Suction out what you can and refill it. Repeat every 2 yrs and you’ll be fine.

what Scotty isn't really telling you is that with the OBD1 system, it doesn't spoon feed you the information. it might give you a code in the 30s for an OBD1 system for Ford which has to do with the EGR system but it doesn't mean it's the valve.

My wife's chevy cruz is burning oil bad! I've done all kinds of maintenance to this car. Even more than my 2016 civic of the same exact year. Not a single solitary issue out of my civic. I've put over 3k in repairs for this cruz in the last 12 months. The make of the car makes a difference. Sheesh

Main thing to do OIL CHANGES, Spark Plugs, Filters, etc. Sensors go out & not much U can do about those until.

My VW Passat has 155,000 miles. Serviced every 10,000 miles and hasn’t had many issues apart from the usual stuff (shocks, a stupid sensor etc) A german-made german car, runs like new.

I have been working on vehicles since 1965. I never trust the plug gap to be correct, or the outer electrode to be centered over the extended electrode. It only takes a couple of minutes to check this out, and make any necessary changes if needed. The majority of times, it is very close. Making an assumption here can create a headache.

16:26 - If anyone reading the comments has a really noisy power steering system -- you might try Amsoil's Synthetic Transmisison Fluid that meets your power steering spec ( ie Mercon V, ATF+4 , etc ) or The Amsoil Specifically named Power Steering Fluid that meets your cars power steering fluid spec (ie Nissan PSF etc ) . That oil has PAO in it and is considered a group 4 synthetic oil, so in short it is generally superior to the group 3 hydrocracked synthetic oil, and definitely superior to conventional oil. I hear alot of people say they used Amsoil in a pump that had a lot of noise and it quieted up pretty good. I switched both our cars over to it, mine uses Transmission Fluid as power steering fluid , so i just matched the right Amsoil transmission fluid to the right spec. But otherwise scotty is correct, get anything that says Synthetic over conventional if you can, the power steering system can use all the help it can get.

Timing chains are stretching will turn on lite soon time to trade. There is a filter in the return hose that is starting to plug. GM fluid is synthetic.

I've got a 02 dodge ram 1500 truck 4.7 liter and it's got 397000 miles on it and still runs good I've always used mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w-30

I would use a scan tool, but my neighbor borrowed it and broke it. He claimed it was that way which had a couple loose parts floating around on the inside. I knew it wasn't that old and wasn't doing that when I lent it to him. I personally think he put it on the roof of his car a slid off. I paid $300 for it and that was my employee discount price so it was a good quality product.

my 2013 civic still has only 54,000 miles. Bought new in April 2013 at 14 miles. haha at this rate ill reach 400,000 by the time im 80. Learning to do my own maintenance. changed oil, transmission oil, transmission, filter, engine filter, cabin filter, engine filter, serpentine belt. The only thing i wouldnt trust myself with is anything to do with the wheels and break system.

With Toyotas you can tell if it’s a factory spark plug because they put a marking on the tip of the plug usually a yellow X.

the main reason you don't try to regap many spark plugs today is because they're so damn cheap, that electrode could break off and ruin your engine. I've seen it in a snowmobile but not a car yet

I have a 2008 Holden Calais, 201000km (near 125000miles) 3.6L V6 similar to the Buick. Got it at 80000km country miles, and live in country so not in traffic, water pump and a power steering hose fixed. Runs very well keep it well maintained has ABS, 7 airbags (not takata), climate control, traction control I could turn off if I wanted to. Live on a dirt road and just as comfortable on dirt as bitumen, I reckon can get 600,000miles out of it. RIP Holden 1948-2017 but keeping mine alive, a friend has a 1948 Holden, daily driven toyota 5 speed trans still good.
