On the range drop: The 320 miles is combined, not highway. Highway is 283 for EPA, meaning you had closer to a 60 mile range reduction, which, given the tires and the camper is actually pretty good overall. Going up the Dalton Hwy, the rolling resistance of a gravel type road has to be MUCH higher than on a paved road, causing a decent reduction, probably mostly overcome by slower speeds as well, balancing it out somewhat. I would have loved to do this adventure with you!

@@neutrino78x I can travel 550 miles in my car, and pull a trailer weighing 3000lbs. Throw a trailer behind this thing and the range drops. Batteries and large EVs which burn through tires and energy are far from good for the environment. You only have so much time so you want to spend it waiting to recharge. A real f150 has a range of 550-940 miles depending on the size of the tank. Refuels in minutes. You aren't buying the future battery technology, you're buying current technology. @@aaron___6014 Plus you're not going to drive that far in one sitting anyway. That's like 10 hours. 250 or 300 is fine for most people. 80% of us live in the urban areas according to the 2020 census. Draw a 300 mile circle around each of the ten major cities (over one million people), that's most of the population of the country. Here in the Bay Area, from Gilroy (most southern suburb/city in Santa Clara County on the south end of SF Bay) to Santa Rosa (far north end of Sonoma County on the north end of the Bay) is about 130 miles. It's rare to do that trip. These cars could go Gilroy to Santa Rosa and back again on one charge. If you were towing, you'd want to recharge in Santa Rosa. Very few people in urban areas like this are driving 500 miles per day on any kind of regular basis. And there are tons of chargers all over the Bay Area, since you have SF (700,000) and Oakland (440,000), 12 miles away from each other, and then San Jose (over 1 million) on the south end of the Bay about 56 miles away. So EV works just fine here and in Los Angeles County and in San Diego County, Seattle and 200 miles radius from there, the Texas Triangle, the Northeast Corridor etc. Like I said, the main barrier right now is initial cost of the car. But as more people buy the 80k trucks, it will be easier and easier for Ford and GM to offer the same battery size for lower cost. There will eventually be 500 mile batteries, but it's not something that 80% of Americans need.

I think this is a great first attempt and as long as you don’t tow a big square trailer you would probably have no problems living with one day to day. I do tow so it’s not for me, but honestly I use a Ram 2500 for towing. A gas F150 would be over it’s payload limit too. I do like the lightning overall. Needs quicker charging and even better range. I don’t think 300 is bad though but will it still do that with some payload? Probably close as long as there’s nothing sticking above the cab creating drag. Solid first attempt from Ford. Will be interesting to see how they develop over coming generations.

I'll be towing my 6000 lb, 24' long, 8' wide trailer with mine when I get it. Replacing a 10 MPG (when towing) diesel F-250 that costs $200 to refuel for a 300 mile trip with a Lightning that will cost ~$40 for the same trip will be great. Sure, I'll have to stop to recharge once each way, rather than just once total for the trip; but it'll be worth it. (All of our usual camp sites are within 150 miles, and all have electricity, so I'll be able to charge the truck while camping.) Also keeping tabs on the Silverado EV - if it can do 400 miles, while charging at ~320 kW, with reasonable efficiency, I'll almost certainly upgrade to it once it's readily available.

We have an electric vehicle dealer locally that advertises a lot and they share a lot of opinion pieces from quasi-journalists who either write for Tech magazines or they write for automotive magazines but they don't actually do anything in the real world, they just write about what's actually written on paper and say hey look buy an electric vehicle. I really like what you guys do because you actually take the electric vehicles out and you test them. You actually put them through their paces and use them in ways that normal people actually use them instead of going for a short drive and talking about how amazing it is or just reading specifications off of a piece of paper. The automotive company that I was referring to, they shared an opinion piece earlier today talking about how electric pickup trucks could basically replace 70% of pickup trucks on the market. While I am sure that a number of people that own pickup trucks use them for commuter vehicles and don't use them 100% of the time for truck purposes, for somebody like myself who lives in a remote area, it would be very unadvisable to have in all electric vehicle. I mean in the summertime it would be fine but then winter, no way. I can't wait to see you guys testing this truck in the winter in deep snow with proper winter tires on it because I'm really interested to see how it performs. I saw a video where another so-called journalist took the Ford Lightning to attract that was groomed and prepared by Ford engineers and they were basically doing donuts in the snow, I don't care about that I want to know how it's going to deal with deep snow and how it's going to deal with ice and how the Electric System is going to function when you start losing Traction in the winter. For somebody like myself, we've been looking at the power boost because that in my opinion is the best option for us to have. It gives us the fuel efficiency of a hybrid because we can use the hybrid in and around town and then when we need to, we have a regular gas powered engine
@davidmenasco5743
@davidmenasco5743 2 жыл бұрын
If you do some searching you will find there are dozens, maybe hundreds, of KZbin videos of electric car owners driving their cars in snow and showing off how much better they perform. The only problem they have is adjusting to the fact that the engine isn't turning most of the fuel into heat like a gas car does. This means finding a way to melt some of the snow off if it sits outside overnight. Otherwise, the performance is better than ICE, just as we've seen in all the TFL videos so far.
@JoshuaEatonCA
@JoshuaEatonCA 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidmenasco5743 I have done that. But they talk about their own personal experience and I'm looking for people to do actual real world testing. Everybody argues over tires and they have different driving conditions. I live in Atlantic Canada and believe me, the winters here are bad. You could wake up one morning and have 50 cm of snow on the ground and then the next morning you wake up and it could be all gone. We've had Winters where we've had a blizzard in the middle of the week every day for an entire month or sometimes even multiple times per week for a month and you could barely even drive on the roads because we literally ran out of places to put snow. Sometimes we have really icy conditions and other times we have very dry conditions. I do appreciate the anecdotes from other owners but I get worried about the amount of bias that the individual owners would have. I don't find that they are very neutral in their positions and that's why I like tfl because these guys tend to be quite neutral and unbiased unless it comes to tires because they like the ko2's really well

The conversation that we had after that about using an electric dump truck was absolutely hilarious because we were trying to calculate what charging times would be like and how much longer it would take to do jobs. We even thought that it would be better to use capacitors with voltage regulation because they can charge and discharge almost instantly but we would have to change the rate at which they discharge so that way they were usable but could recharge almost instantaneously

You mentioned that there was a significant amount of lost range due to the camper. You based on the stated 320 mile range. I drove my Chevy Bolt from California to Brazil and consistently got approximately 25% more than the stated 259 mile of range. It this carried over the the Lightening you would get 400 miles of range under ideal conditions. Of course I wasn't dealing with a lot of extra weight and aerodynamic issues as you did with the camper. But I'm wondering how much of the lost range had to do with driving style. Obviously speed is an important factor as you said. However, the Bolt has a real-time numerical kW display that I used to train myself to minimize kW. I learned that maintaining speed on upgrades eats up the kW fast. Just letting off the accelerator on upgrades, within reason, saves a lot of battery. Also I learned to milk the regeneration. It's interesting that the Lightening doesn't have a numerical kW read-out. I don't think many EV's have this but I found it super helpful. One last thing: I've been thinking of doing something similar to you with the super-light pop-up topper from FourWheelCampers. If you were starting from scratch is there anything you would do differently with the camper, aerodynamics, etc?

Let's be honest.....if a person is buying a ev truck, they understand the range loss when towing and if you live in dallas of near any major city, there are plenty lakes within 50 miles. Also, customers that can afford 100k EV, probably will just buy a plane ticket to travel cross country. With that said. 220 Miles of range is sufficient when you can charge at home everyday

Most people use their pickup trucks as their daily driver or doing local chore work in North America...and of course as a show piece too I agree with that. If you're trying to replace your Freightliner M2 Sport Chassis this probably isn't for you, absolutely. Still compared to a Ford F-450 the gold standard in consumer towing and hauling this vehicle is quite the revelation as it shows you truly can go just about anywhere...no transmission, no diesel fuel, no compression issues, no exhaust or DEF fluid so for a first attempt well...be interesting to see how Ford itself responds with the 2023 Model Year Super Duty which clearly now has to compete with this. I think sales will only be limited by production for North America for this truck which says to me anyways a potentially spectacular decline in both gasoline and diesel fuel consumption that will only continue to accelerate for 2022 especially going into Year end.

Think i've seen a Tesla Model Y can add roughly 150 miles of range in 15 minutes....that seems very doable on a roadtrip. Go bathroom, get a drink/snack/stretch legs. That is where you need to be nationwide..at least on major highways/interstates. The charging infrastructure (along with the electric grid) is going ot need a crap ton of investment. Also gas stations, walmarts, mcdonalds, etc will all have to have chargers nearby (see Norway). The tech is about there (batteries/charging), its just availibility is not.

One thing I don’t recall y’all doing with the lightning was a true bone stock as delivered from the factory range test to see how that compared in the real world to the 310 and stated by Ford. Lots of Tesla people are seeing for less real world miles that is being advertised by Tesla. Also, folks don’t realize that the battery is a consumable and it’s only at its best when you drive it off the parking lot. It’s going to slowly lose miles of range even if you don’t drive it over time. We really need real world reporting on that so folks understand the decreasing range over time but also the cost of replacing the batteries. Also need real world testing in really hot conditions of 100 F plus as well below freezing.

They drove the F-150 from Michigan to Colorado with no changes, but you can also see range tests of the different F-150's at State of Charge at a steady 70mph. The EPA range is set at a steady 50mph on level ground at ideal temperature which is not really repeatable in the real world since no one goes that slow and there are hills and wind. In reality, you will drive all your normal commute and errands and plug in overnight at home and when you wake up it's full again. On a road trip, you are just going between one charger and the next, so that is the only range that matters. I only charge enough on trips to get to the next charge as there is no point in sitting longer unless you are doing something. The battery in my Tesla is over 7 years old and still under warranty until the car turns 8 next June. The car originally had 230 miles of range and I charged it to 100% in June and it showed 223 miles. Normally I never charge above 175 miles because my daily commute is 50 miles and in winter the car might use 70 miles of range. If you charge to full, or fast charge every day, you will wear out the battery faster, but it is probably still going to last longer than any gas engine. I have done three road trips of 5000 miles in summer and one 7000 mile road trip in winter and had no problems except not liking to sit at chargers longer than needed and most new cars charge faster and will spend less time charging than my car. Plus newer cars tend to have longer range so they will stop to charge less often than I do. All the electric cars do a fair amount of testing in Alaska and Finland except for Nissan and we saw how that worked out with the first Leafs
@derekk6906
@derekk6906 2 жыл бұрын
If you only charge enough to get to next charger, you are brave lol. If freeway is closed ahead due to crash and they are rerouting traffic through the backroads that could be a problem. With ICE it is so easy to keep a full tank that we rarely get below half a tank on road trips.

@@steinwaymodelb the epa hwy est is available publicly and tfl does know it it's just another way Roman knocks on evs imo. For reference the platinum trim with 22s is only rated for 279miles of hwy range. So for this truck with those wider more aggressive tires, the additional camper weight and aero drag plus the roofbar thing. It's not bad at all that it managed 220-250 real world hwy miles. Especially when you consider the entire energy capacity of its battery pack at 131kwhs is less than 4 gallons worth of gas. 👍🏻

@4literv6 2 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldking1054 true enough efficiency is flipped for ice vs ev. Ev is much better in town due to regen and less aero drag from slower speeds. Case in point some owners on the lightning forums are showing 2.9-3.1miles per kwh in stop n go or rural 55mph and under driving. Which is crazy efficient and equals 100mpge. Ice steady state cruising at hwy velocities are at their best efficiency wise. Even though none of my ice f-150s have ever gotten within 10% of their hwy rated ranges. 😁 My point was the 320 figure is not the actual epa hwy mpge figure that is publicly posted for the lightning, the 320 mile figure is for mixed driving range not all hwy driving. The hwy range goes all the way down to 279miles depending on which wheels&tires are chosen and which trim lightning you are in. For example the rivian r1t is qouted all the time at 314miles of total range, but the hwy range with the 20" all terrain is only 274miles. So you can see how someone not knowing that would be disappointed if they saw something like 270miles out of a full charge driving only hwy speeds.

A bit of Googling shows that New York City to Orlando is 1,073 miles. Google suggests that is about 15 hours and 38 minutes to drive. (I don't think they include restroom breaks, food breaks, or refueling stops in there, so there is that.) Using the stock setup for the Lightning, I think that would amount to three recharges. with Level 3 recharging, it would add a few hours to that trip -- perhaps even an overnight stay somewhere -- but it would be doable. This truck is really going to shine when a contractor is using it for daily business. Charge at home each night and arrive at the job site with power to spare.
