This is something I’ve been saying with many of my truck buying friends. The towing suffers compared to ICE trucks…BUT many buyers of trucks in today’s market don’t tow at all. In the Southeast region of the US, there are large quantities of people who choose a truck, specifically an F150 as their DD with no intention of EVER using a tow hitch or hauling heavy loads in the bed. The amount of carpeted, locking tonneau covered beds treated like massive cargo compartments in trucks can’t be overstated. So for the working person that hauls and tows, the Lightning isn’t the answer. But for all the people who choose truck as their answer to the only vehicle in their driveway/parking spot despite the lack of “need” for a truck, this is hard to ignore.
@AndrewVanTil2 жыл бұрын
ICE trucks also suffer a massive range hit when towing. Physics doesn't care about how you're making the car go. We just don't care, measure, or talk about it because there are gas stations everywhere. If you want to say an EV truck isn't the right choice for me now because infrastructure, that's fair. But it's not correct to lose that nuance in the mix.
@pingon555552 жыл бұрын
I agree, however, given the difference in price it is a hard pill to swallow still. If the price of a regular f150 and the lighting where ballpark then this car would have no competition imo.

@@Welcometofacsistube as good as this, you mean having the greatest acceleration but not being able to pull a trailer for more than 33 ft without needing to be recharged. Electric vehicles are great but there's a reason they went from Electric back to gasoline 100 years ago. Yeah you can make them better today, but better doesn't mean much. They weren't working with a lot to begin with. As a truck it really doesn't make any sense at all. You need electricity for it to do its job and electricity depletion is an issue on a smaller car. Now you're going to try pulling a trailer with it. It's ridiculous. Even if electric cars take off and make sense for someone driving 20 miles to work and back, or in that case they might want a truck like this one to do it. Even if that were the case, these aren't going to take over the duty of a real truck. They're just not a real truck, they don't have the range to be considered one. Even these two gentlemen at throttle House made that clear. This truck literally couldn't even feel the duty of their old Dodge Ram for one day without falling short. And that's not counting stopping in between to charge it up 3,000 times as the battery keeps dying.

The Hummers a much more successful truck than this as well even though I don't like the Hummer. The interesting thing is the F-150 is very plain and still costs the same which I find absolutely ridiculous. What are you paying for? You're paying big money for a truck that looks like every other F1 shitty but has nowhere near the range of one and constantly needs to be plugged in, and that's if your not towing with it. Sweet. It's not anger, it's more like disgust because they actually think someone's going to pay $100,000 to drive from one power outlet to another. They really can't figure out why the electric car themes not taking off. You want to hear another interesting fact? I just read an article last night where they interviewed a bunch of people that owned electric vehicles and asked them what their next vehicle will be. A lot of the grid systems and a lot of the Cities couldn't support everybody charging a car. There's just a lot of things not going into the detail of this even Beyond the vehicle engineering itself. Meanwhile anything with a diesel or gasoline engine has been made out to be the evildoer despite the fact that they've really over excelled at producing something pretty complicated. This was my thought. Batteries are a good source of weight to balance ride stability. Having a flat-bed with a battery underneath the bed, the added capacity of additional cells would far out-weigh the additional weight of the flat-bed's battery. And it could even be a "smart" bed. You can control tilt, a rear-camera, ride-height all from inside the cab of the truck. Or hey, if we REALY want to get crazy... Have an additional motor on the rear of the flat-bed. Imagine towing but not losing power on an up-hill climb because the flat-bed has a hauling motor? It would also help you get un-stuck.

6:44 - Ever since this truck was revealed, I've found that "DRL light bar" to be one of the cheapest looking things to have ever been attached to an automobile. I cannot believe they actually stuck with it into the production models. It looks like a giant, plastic CFL bulb housing that could be popped off with the tug of a finger. The entire fascia is brought down by a single piece of trim. And don't even get me started on that disgusting panel misalignment.

Very impressive first try from Ford. I see there are many in the comments pounding their chests and declaring this won't work because they tow 18,000 tons every weekend... but the truth is, a whole lot of truck owners don't. They use them to move their families, haul stuff home from Lowe's, and maybe tow a boat to the lake on the weekends. It'll do those things just fine. I think for a truck, the range should be a very important factor to consider. Evs have a long way to go to improve that.
@AndrewVanTil2 жыл бұрын
Why don't we talk about range and the hit from towing for an ICE truck? It's because we have gas stations everywhere. EV range is only a concern because the infrastructure isn't there yet in some locations. That's not to say that we shouldn't push for better efficiency or battery technology, those things are valid goals. More that to solve a problem, it's important to understand what that problem actually is.

Electric does have potential; it's just not there quite yet.

@@cn2673 In general use, I currently spend exactly zero minutes charging my car. So we're already there, assuming you have access to L2 destination charging. It just kind of happens when you're doing other things, and you don't have to think about it, or do anything to make it happen; except plug the car in when you get there. If you compare that to ICE refueling on a general usage pattern, you're spending WAY more time refueling (and let's be honest, three minutes isn't even a realistic target for putting gas in your car). If you're talking about a road trip scenario, then yeah it will take longer if you're trying to do your road trip strike team style. If you're doing it more like the way most people actually travel, the time you spend charging on the road is about the same as the amount of time you spend refueling an ICE car.
@AndrewVanTil2 жыл бұрын
@@ElysiumsJourney It depend a lot on how far you're planning to tow, and if there are L2 destination chargers available where you will end up (which is an infrastructure thing). Using an EV properly requires a shift in thinking about refueling. The only time I have to think about, or spend any actual time, refueling my EV is when I drive really far from home. The rest of the time, as long as I plug it in occasionally, it's always ready to go with plenty of energy to get me where I want to go.

Trips to the building supply stores and camping trips using the Frunk keeping camping items dry. I would enjoy having the electric hookups for emergency and camping. Regarding powering your home. It's like if your using a portable generator. You power the necessities. Refrigerator, lights and other priority items that work from the lightning's amperage. Looking at Rivian which is a mid size Truck. I was Looking at their financial condition and their inability to meet their projected build numbers. I'm not sure if they're here to stay. I'm sure your aware. Unless you tow in the tow setting. The computer will drop well below the actual towing range. I enjoy actual reviews, not nit picking. I suggest finding a Rivian service center. Why haven't they just made a trailer that has batteries equipped at the front (for load distribution), that also runs a drive-train for the trailer itself? The towing thing goes back to efficiency - gas vehicles are very inefficient, so massive roof boxes or trailers don't hurt that much. EVs are very efficient, so every little thing knocks off some of that efficiency
@Manu__R2 жыл бұрын
@L W Right, gasoline is more energy dense, I'm talking about the power train. A gasoline engine is way less efficient (something around 30% efficiency) than an electric motor, so while an ev needs less energy to go the same distance as gas, every added bit of drag or weight increases energy consumption significantly.

@Trendyflute2 жыл бұрын
Your comment is just plain wrong. Efficiency is a measure of how much energy is expended to generate a certain amount of work. The efficiency of the drivetrain isn't changed by how the vehicle is loaded. More weight/drag means more energy is needed from the drivetrain, so if you're burning fuel you will need more fuel and if you're using electricity in a battery you will need more energy from the battery for a given distance traveled. In a 30% efficient ICE, 70% of the energy in the gas is wasted to heat while in a 90% efficient BEV, only 10% of the energy in the battery is wasted as heat. Take both vehicles and load them lightly, their energy consumption goes down. Load them heavily and their energy consumption goes up. But their efficiency doesn't change.
@Manu__R2 жыл бұрын
@@Trendyflute Depends what you're calling efficiency. If "efficiency" is the ratio of energy consumed to energy put out, you're correct that efficiency doesn't change (and I'll admit that is probably a more accurate use of the word). But if "efficiency" is the ratio of energy consumed to distance traveled (which is what MPG is), then yes, a vehicle will be less efficient under increased load or drag.
