In this episode I provide the history of Scion, a sub-brand of Toyota which was first launched in the U.S. in 2003, and would later also be sold in Canada by 2010. Scion cars were marketed exclusively to young people, and Toyota also launched Scion AV, which produced music and videos, and organized rock concerts around the country to help promote the brand. Starting with the xA and xB, the latter being one of the most oddly cool vehicles ever, they later expanded with the tC and xD, the tiny city car iQ, and the rear-drive sports car FR-S. After peaking in sales in 2006, the sales dropped every year after that, leading to Toyota to end Scion by 2016.

I bought a used 2010 xB and liked the car, other than the toaster jokes. I don’t see many xA or xB around. I still see the TC. When I had my xB, I noticed more retired people were driving them than young people in their 20’s, which it was marketed for. I think old people liked them because the xB was cheap, easy to drive, easy to get in and out of, and it was a reliable Toyota.

I still see at least one first gen Scion xB every time I drive around town , as well as the updated version. They will still be on the road for many more years too. My parents had a charcoal gray 2006 Scion xB with the manual. They offered it to me as my first car and my stupid ass didn't want it at the time. It had like 30,000 miles.... I would probably still have it today if I was smart enough to take it back then. Today I drive a 2021 Kia Soul, the only "box car" still sold new today. I also see tons of old people driving the Kia Soul and Scion xB... shows it's a wise car to buy lol

For me living in Southern California, I still see plenty of 2nd generation XB's around. My coworker owns a 2013 and it still runs great. The 1st generation XB, not so much anymore. The few 1st generation XB's that I see have basically been trashed to death. I rarely see a 1st generation XB in nice condition now.

Yes, ironically the boxy and funky looking Scion xB and Honda Element, which were targeted at young, hip and trendy buyers ended up selling like crazy to older (often retired) buyers for the ease of entry, lots of headroom and lots of space, especially if they didn't want a minivan, but still wanted that practical boxy body style and higher seat height to make getting in and out easier. I guess Scion/Toyota and Honda were just glad to make the sales, even if it wasn't their intended market, though I think that tarnished the image a bit more, when they were seen as a vehicle your parents or grandparents would drive.

Mrs. Baird's Bakery in Texas outfitted an xB as a toaster and drove it in parades. Toyota could have kept and rebranded the xB if they did realize older people were buying them, and to compete with the Kia Soul.

Long time Scion owner since 2004 here and I can help shed some light into some holes. - Late 2003 California got the xA and xB while the East coast got the xA and xB in early 2004. The Midwest finally got them in late 2004. - Due to the “pure price” aspect, when we bought our first xB in May of 2004, we couldn’t get a salesperson to give us a look. In the beginning Toyota salespeople didn’t want to touch them because they were only able to make a certain amount and can’t upsell. So we got a young guy that was fantastic but it was so obvious the “older salespeople” wanted nothing to do with Scion. - Scion used to have stellar events for their owners. Huge shows at big stadiums and cruises through major cities. Specific sections of shows like HIN too. You’d have to apply with your car for smaller shows but the big ones drew people from all over. It was really a great community back in the day. - Originally Scion claimed they were only going to use model names for a model cycle and then drop them for all new models as time progressed. Which is why the xA became the xD. Buuuut Scion changed their mind with the strong sales of the original xB. They also did this with the tC by keeping around way longer and keeping the name into the tC2. - When the second gen xB was introduced, we all called them xB2’s and within the community they are still known as that. - The original xA and xB were basically Toyota Echos and Yaris’ as they shared soooo many parts, including the 1NZFE engines. - The second gen bB, which is what the xB is in Japan, would have been the perfect successor for the first gen xB. But it never happened and we got the xB 2 instead. - The xD was more Corolla than it was Yaris. My personal take is Scion could have stayed around a long time if it stuck to the quirky city cars. But they went after bigger fish and those fish didn’t bite. The weirdos build brand loyalty while the masses jump from ship to ship. Many xB owners are still around. I’ve had my OG xB RS2.0 (the yellow one) since April of 2005 and am about to buy my third to start preserving these cars. Many OG xBs are recognizable within the community.

Still rocking a tC2 here. Still going strong at 148k, got it at 67k in 2017. All it's needed besides oil changes were a couple of wheel bearings and brake calipers since I live in road salt country. Hoping to upgrade sometime soon, but with the current state of the market I'll just have to wait a bit longer. Till then I'll still proudly rock a Scion. I still see xB, an occasional xA, and tCs riding around likely also still on stock trans fluid, stock struts, stock everything. These things are darn near bulletproof.

@@TheLionAndTheLamb777 I did look up the procedure but it was far too late to do that by the time I looked. Even moreso now than before, doing it now would likely cause more harm than good since the fluid likely has enough friction material to keep it shifting as smooth as it can now. I swapped the fluid in my first car at nearly 200k and after that the thing was ready to grenade itself

I had a 07 tc from new till 2019 at 205k miles and sold it. What a great car. Little things started breaking toward the end, but the engine and 5 speed ran like it had less than 100k. I had some things replaced like clutch, water pump, power steering pump, alternator, but overall pretty trouble-free. Everything else literally stock like you said, including struts and original exhaust. Like all cars plastic stuff like coil connectors started getting brittle after 12 years. One thing that was obviously engineered wrong was the blower motor, probably not wired or designed right. I put 4 of those things in myself. But who can complain? I probably put 3k into the car in repairs over 200k miles, and there aren't many cars that can say that.

I was thirty when the Scion brand came out, and though I was on the tail end of the market demographic, I found myself wanting two of these: xB - Oh hot diggity, it's a box on wheels! I could have put tools and modest sized lumber in there by day, and my bass, amp, and related equipment by night. It looked so much more practical than my Celica for that sort of thing, and I wouldn't have to start the car with a wire to the battery any longer. FRS - I actually liked the Subaru BRZ more, but they're just about the same car. Nothing else comes as close to the Datsun 240Z in spirit and purpose than the FRS and company. Light weight, not too much power but enough to get out of its own way, fun to drive, etc. If I didn't have a perfectly working Miata (20 years and counting) I'd go hunting for an FRS/BRZ used. I could probably stuff my bass and amp in it, which I can't do with the Miata.

I bought an 06 xb. It is my favorite car I’ve ever had. I treated it terribly. I pulled a zero turn mower on a trailer behind it every day pretty much for two years. Hit two deer. Still running and driving today. I took ALL the scion branding off it and put nice Ford logos on it. People asked constantly what kind of Ford it was. I would tell them it was a Ford FlexB. Half the people believed me. I also mounted a expensive full width led light bar on the roof and a ladder rack. 18” wheels with wide tires and it would corner like crazy. Wouldn’t want one with an automatic though. Not a lot of power as it is and an automatic would kill it. Never would be able to tow with an automatic.

It is still in excellent condition, and has only had one break job at 130,000 miles. The extra room and higher output of the engine, made it a better buy than others offered at the time. I have had it for close to 18 years (never kept any car this long) and have circa 156,000 miles on it. It has mostly normal wear and tear items done to it with wheel bearing replacements, an exhaust system and clutch replacement over the years. I wish Toyota would come out with the 2004-2006 xB again only this time with 4" more width, 4" more cargo area depth, a 1.8 - 2 litre engine, a 6 speed transmission and a less odd looking front end - perfect! Same AWD and drive train as the CR-V and very bullet proof. It's my wife's daily and she will never part with it. The Scion felt flimsy and less solid in comparison to the Element and was FWD only. Their approximate shape was the only thing they had in common and were not really comparable vehicles.

the reason why old people were only buying scion cars is because the younger buyers at the time were buying all the front-wheel drive tuner cars like the civic and integra or rear and all-wheel drive tuners like the skyline, s-2000 and even Toyota’s own Supra. Which was when the tuner scene from the fast and furious was in full swing.

Upgraded my Manual scion xb04 with this “PG Automatic Transmission Filter PT1294”, no more high revving in 4th gear and I can get Higher RPM before getting into 5th. Love my Scion XB. I see quite a few out here in the Bay Area. It is funny that when the Scion came out I was loan officer and we had a lot of older people getting them, because it was easy for them to get into.lol

My 2007 Scion Xa was used as a daily commuter for 10 years until my kids started driving. 3 kids have learned to drive in it and my third daughter is driving it to work as I type this. 260,000 miles with no major issues. I just looked at another Xa yesterday for my son who will start driving next year. Easy to work on, cheap to buy, operate and fix......what more can you ask for?

The Scion xB started the box on wheels movement in the United States lol. I've actually ridden in both the Scion xB both first and second generations, and the Honda element. Definitely prefer the first generation Scion xB. Surprisingly the Scion xB first generation has more cargo room even though the Honda Element looks much bigger. Even though I like making fun of all those cars because of how boxy and different looking they are.

Scions are still fairly common in South Florida. I think the original Xb was their coolest model, though it was not great to drive. Toyota still has trouble marketing to younger people. They build the best cars on the road, yet they’re rather staid in their design. When they try to go trending, they just end up looking a bit weird.
@cjmhall

Sure they’re reliable, but that’s all they’ve got going for them. Boring to drive, awkward looking and not as advanced as other brands is how I would describe Toyota. Their typical buyer has zero interest in cars and just wants something that will reliably get them from A to B.

This was the fatal flaw for the manual version of the tC. If they would've put a taller overdrive 6th gear on the second gen- it should've gotten better hwy mileage than the Camry which was around 34 at the time. The 6 speed could've been a close-ratio 5 speed with a hwy 6th gear. My dad had one and could only get 30 mpg and commuted mostly highway to work. The rev hang was terrible too.

I hope you changed the water pump and serpentine belt. I replaced the first water pump at 120k but the second died at 193k. It will sound like a belt rubbing. Supposedly that's coolant splashing onto your alternator belt. I killed my head gasket unfortunately. Also mine needed new bearings in the rear TWICE. Otherwise no major problems.

I love my Scion iQ. Very easy car to live with because its great on gas, simple maintenance, very easy to park in the city, and fun to drive. No its not fast but it does give you the comfort of a Corolla with the maneuvers of a go-kart. It's still super small but three adults fit no problem for short trips. I see them around Los Angeles fairly regularly and I've seen a couple that are completely customized. I've been asked by more than a few strangers if I wanted to sell it because they're rare to find and people love it when they see it. Its like walking around with a cute puppy. Its getting time for me to get a new car but I'm keeping the iQ because I just love it and there's plenty of places that a larger car is going to be a pain to park.

I had an opportunity to participate in a pre-release Scion demo xB back in 2003 at a local record and music sore in Houston. Fun thing is they gave out some swag including vinyl and CDs and hats and usual stuff. I still have the sling bag they gave me that was sized to carry vinyl records, it made a great courier bag while riding a motorcycle and I have actually replaced the zipper on it because I've used it so much, its really a great bag. I liked the xB a lot but I was between jobs at the time (which is why I was hanging out a record store) and couldn't afford one. Great video!

With the exception of the tC, the Scion brand's strategy was to introduce Japanese-market cars (JDM) into the US. The most noteable example was the xB. It sold well here in the US because of what was considered 'radical' styling, but in Japan, it wasn't considered radical at all. But Scion's youth strategy failed with the second-gen xB, as it's more conservative looks attracted older buyers

I have an XB2, and it's a fantastic car. I did the math, and it had about the same cargo area as the Ford Ranger I had before it, without having to worry about my stuff getting stolen out of a truck bed. I've moved a bathtub, a stove, and a small refrigerator in the back of that little car, as well as countless 2x4s (up to 9 footers fit with everything closed). We've also done several multi-thousand mile road trips with my family of 4, and everyone is able to have a pretty comfortable ride, even with the car loaded for a vacation. I'm creeping up on 150k miles, and I'm expecting to at least double that. There are a number of folks in the various scion subreddits with over 300k, and some over 400k.

I drive a 08 xB. 2.4L Camry engine, 5 speed manual. Practical mono-spec car. A few pleasant modern creature comforts with cruise, power windows, traction control. Bought the car in 2011 with 55k on it for $8,300. Now in 2021 - 141k. Oil, brakes, tires, and a replacement parking brake cable. It soon needs a replacement front pipe and cat as they have rusted and cracked. Fold the rear seat down and you have a 4.5ft little covered bed. I use it as part truck part mini van. This car was perfect for me as a young 20 something just starting out carrying gear around to now being in my 30's hauling a toddler about in a car seat.

I see tons of scions in my state. It's a hot commodity that if you find one in craigslist on sale (by owner) it's gone in minutes. The late model xb can have 150k miles and sells for more than $5k. I was going to buy an xa that was selling for $3500 that was just posted and by the time I decided to buy it, it was sold...within 15 minutes! I was always a nissan fan (nx2000, 240sx, 350z) and saw the xb. I thought it was a weird looking car but for some reason I was so intrigued that I went to the dealership to test drive one. I fell in love and bought it, cash. I had to wait 2 weeks for it's delivery from Japan. I still have it with 210k miles. I would have bought a newer one and get rid of my "trophy" 350z bc I wasn't using it at all. I wished I did. Now I have only toyota cars! I was hoping Scion would've come out with a mini truck ( single cab hilux) but it didn't happened.
