Yo this is some KZbin gold right here I’ve had a Z for 5 years Odometer works when it wants and the speed sensor isn’t the issue will try this and hopefully it fixes it! If it does I will be one very very happy man

You have a really really clean Z by the way bro. It’s perfectly intact every stock piece looks almost new the paint is amazing I hope you don’t sell this thing unless it’s to me haha really tho looks showroom quality for its miles very nice👌🏼

First and foremost, THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!!! After following the video, I found that the plastic gear on the motor had pushed out. I pushed it back in, cleaned the motor (it was filthy) and reinstalled. BINGO, problem solved.

Thank you for this video, I was intimidated to pull the gauges out but this vid inspired me. Thanks!

Peter : Your odometer motor clean-out technique did work on mine as well. We'll see for how long (knocking wood) Obtained two different (supposedly) '91 NA odometers to cannibalize the motor from. Neither was compatible, physically, nor was their connector. Thought a lower-mileage odometer motor might be a good fix (after clean-out). No joy. Last option was your approach. I slaved in the IP & performed a short test hop. Registered 12 miles more on the odometer, and my previously lazy trip odometer. too. I gave the reset stem mechanical parts a tiny drop of "Gun Butter". Worked like a Champ.

Peter : Very well done video. My '91 Non-turbo's odometer has gone inop. I'll use your guidance to fix mine. Owned mine since February 1995. Fixed just about everything else over time. I'm thinking after I give mine the clean-out (unless I can source a new motor), it'd be useful to connect to a low-amperage 12 volt source for testing. I'm hoping it's connector will facilitate that.

Hi Jeff, I hope this procedure works for you. My odometer motor has occasionally stopped working since doing this. I've tied it to ambient temperature. If it's above 60 degrees F, then it works. Below that, and it usually won't work until the interior warms up to about that amount. I think it's the stepper motor having issues, but I couldn't find a new one outside of sourcing a used replacement cluster.

Great vid. Hope it's my fix. Was worried as hell when I filled up and my trip odo said 110 miles to a full tank!

Why did you speed through the disassembly / assembly of the instrument cluster? Even on super slow mo, we could not figure out how to split the back section of the cluster off.

great video Peter, I have a 91 TT with a speed and odometer both not working intermittently. any tips?
@PracticalEnthusiast6 жыл бұрын
Since your speedometer is acting up, I would start by taking a look at the speed sensor that is located on the transmission. It's possible that either the plastic gear on the end of it is wearing out, or the sensor itself is dying. The speedometer and odometer use separate motors, so I'd say something up stream of those is causing the problem. Hope that helps!

Great video and the simple fix worked, will bookmark if I have hat problem. I need to remove my gage cluster, do you have a normal speed for that process? Thanks Pete

Unfortunately I don't have a slower video but here's a great article on how to do it: conceptzperformance.com/wiki/index.php/Gauge_Cluster

Thanks I have problem in the speed not move you know any idea?
@PracticalEnthusiast4 жыл бұрын
The speedometer not working could be many things. Possibly the speed sensor in the transmission, or wiring to the cluster, or even the cluster itself. If you have a TT, it could also be an issue with the HICAS system.

z32 odometer reads in miles, can I change the kilometer

Do you still have your Z? If so how has your repairs held up over time? 😁
@PracticalEnthusiast10 ай бұрын
Nope, I sold it a couple years back. It was doing great at that time though.

Considering this video is two years old. How has the odometer been working since then. I have taken mine out a few times. It still works on and off. Im thinking connection or weak motor.
@PracticalEnthusiast4 жыл бұрын
It stopped working about 3 times after making this video. But it has worked consistently for the past 6 months. So... maybe it is good to go now? I tried looking around for direct-swap stepper motor but I couldn't find anything unfortunately.

@@PracticalEnthusiast So, in my past experience with Z32’s, when the odometer freezes, it’s due to the trip reader gear getting stuck. You need to reset it numerous times whilst driving and going over “bumps” in the road. Eventually whilst resetting, a bump at just the right time will give the trip meter gear the leverage it needs to release itself and carry on racking mileage to the car.
@PracticalEnthusiast4 жыл бұрын
@@39PSIOnTheDaily that's some great info, thanks for sharing. I'll have to give it a try if it acts up on me again.

@@PracticalEnthusiast NICE ride, i still have my ttzd.com (STOLN) Marco. I am trying to fix why my speed gauge doesn't work. My miles/trip gauge works fine. i did have a gear in my trans that was wearing the teeth (bought new blue gear for $22. bucks) , i also tested the motor using drill and AC Volt meter (it does shows 1-6 volts). I now I will test on the dash (Yellow black wire and Blue wire (left side of dash) then drive car to see if i get 1-6 Volts while driving. you said it might "hicas " what do I test to see if it is that?
@joecool333337 ай бұрын
@@marcopatterson5571 I know it’s been a while. What ended up being the problem with your speed gauge? I have the same issue, speed sensor (VSS) checks out fine but gauge reads 0MPH all the time.

Is it unethical to lower the mileage for show purposes?
@PracticalEnthusiast6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's unethical and illegal (illegal in the USA at least). Also, vehicles with an odometer discrepancy are worth significantly less than ones without. A discrepancy can often be identified through a vehicle's registration history, or even something like CarFax, because mileages are recorded with each historical entry. Keep it honest, and be proud of the mileage your vehicle wears. A clean high-miler is far more impressive than a clean low-miler anyway!

I hope I can do the same with my z31. I would rather not purchase a whole new cluster if my gears are busted.

That looks like it’s a stepper motor (brushless motor, like the ones in printers).
